I know that most of /v/ doesn't have the firsthand experience that would help them understand, but Square Enix is jewish as all hell when it comes to DLC. Bravely Default: For the Sequel had 4 costumes that you could have a CHANCE of getting if you bought a 3000円 artbook. Buying the artbook gave you a code that would unlock 1 out of 4 costumes. There was no other way to get them.
With Dragon Quest, I'm salty because they never brought over スライムもりもり3 - I had to import it - and the RIDICULOUS accents that they bring to the Western releases of Dragon Quest games. That, along with the fact that the whole reason I imported Bravely Default was because of the censorship, what they did with Bravely Second in the west didn't help matters.

I already did the calculations. If SquareEnix had released all the Dragon Quest games on 3DS, PS4 and Dragon Quest X, I would have already spent $850 dollars by now. Which is far more than the $60 they would have gotten out of me from FFXV.
So in reality, they did lose a ton of sales. Not just from me, but people as a whole. SquareEnix needs to go back to their practices of the SNES and PS1. Making dozens of medium sized games that sell 1-3 million copies each. Rather than depending on one high cost game release that sells 6 million.

Chrono Trigger DS actually sold some 950,000 copies. A fucking port of Chrono Trigger sold only 200k less than a total remake of FFIV on the DS.
With virtually no development costs, Chrono Trigger DS obviously made more money than FFIV. But of course, SquareEnix doesn't look at profit made. They just care about units sold. Same as how Dragon Quest IX sold 1 million less than Final Fantasy XIII, but most likely made far more profit because of 1/10th the development cost.

They are designed around linear/forward progression which mainly focuses on guiding the player rather than the other way around. Non-linear dungeons, like those from XI, serve to immerse a player and allow them to create their own experience. I liked Bravely Default and I'm liking FF14but I've never played WoW or XI. Dragon Quest is still consistently quality, and I look forward to X. personally i think that nomura was given a budget to put together a CGI trailer for a concept that just kept getting pushed back.
my pet theory is that whoever said "the FFVII compilation will conclude on the 20th anniversary" wanted to wait for technology to evolve (something that was gradually in the works during the dev stage of FFXV) before announcing a remake.
i don't think the game was actively "in development" until around 2012 when trailers started to resurge.
if you watch the kingsglaive trailer, it mostly contains scenes that were used as trailers from FFvsXIII up to now. seeing as how none of those assets seem to be in FFXV, it's logical that they converted those assets into scenes for the movie so that they don't go to waste as far as the original vision is concerned. in this way, at least they can appease those who have been waiting for the past 10 years for this game.
my conclusion is that they probably should never have announced FFvsXIII in the first place, and waited until resources were available to pour into the game instead of hyping fans up for the past 10 years.
