There's online mode and offline mode. Online mode lets you invade other players' worlds to steal their embers, or do co-op with other players to earn embers.

Embers give you a 25% max health boost when active, and they act as a full heal. Pretty worthwhile.

Because a shield's only worth is for the secondary effect it has(I.E Grass Crest Shield). You can dodge roll through absolutely everything and there's almost always room, the stats you need for decent shields are far too high and they weigh far too much, and parrying isn't really needed at all but it's there if you want it. It's better to just learn to roll and stab since you're just wasting stamina and/or health by blocking.

That I disagree with. The world is circularly connected. Everything in design (not the map on the wiki page, I'm talking when you actually look around on buildings and such) indicates that they could have spun around underground areas to be underneath the center and other areas could connect in a circular fashion with adjacent places.

It being big isn't a reason to exclude connectivity. Hell some areas are connected in a way that could have allowed more choice but they played the whole "Door cannot open from this side" or "needs a key that's on the other side of the map".

It's like DaS2 again... They look like they are just fucking teasing fans of the first game. Like they were gonna do it, but just changed their mind again, because "players will get lost".

The point of this game is you going into different areas that are clearly not a part of lothric in the sense of time and space, they wouldn't have shortcuts and buildings that interconnect because they aren't even supposed to be there.

Linearity ≠ bad design. Ds1 and ds3 aren't the same game. They clearly made sure to make the world feel connected in a visual sense, but just because some sewers aren't forcefully put somewhere near profaned capital to get you back into lothric doesn't mean it's DS2 all over again.

No it doesn't, but only by developer choice. Every major location can be linked circularly, but they just chose to connect them linearly.

And no, linearity isn't inherently bad. It's just worse than the non-linearity because that offers and allows more replayability and player choices. Builds can be formed almost immediately in DaS1 but the latter two games lack that same freedom. It makes replaying the game incredibly simplistic and boring in comparison. Choice is there but easily proven to be weaker than in DaS1 where you can nearly complete many builds in less than 30 mins from starting. This adds a level of immersion to and a great reward for knowing what you want and how to get to it.

That reward doesn't exist in the more linear later games, because despite knowing where things are I still know I am forced to defeat roughly 7 bosses and go through at least as many areas completely before I'm allowed to acquire the complete set and build I want.

Yeah, that's actually my problem with nexus, majula, and firelink of DaS3. They are just places you own. Everything is just there for you.

At least the blacksmiths being in their own place gives the feeling and notion that the world operates without you. At least some NPCs move on and do their own things in DaS3. But this "hub" system is really shit and needs to die. It makes the game feel far too formulaic.

It would be nice to have a world like DaS1 but without the samey formulas of the past souls games. Tired of hunting 4 major bosses til the final one. That was the only thing I liked about Bloodborne. It at least felt unpredictable because of how many bosses were actually optional (not necessarily good once you realize that the optional bosses don't hide connections to other areas, bar 1 of them, but just dead ends) and it wasn't completely made certain what bosses you needed to fight to beat the game.

You can out run it and he'll almost never use it once you're pushed back to the wall.

Also in the overall Souls design any enemy that belches gas is belching insanely dangerous gas(basilisks, etc) ... except the Jailers in 3 who are using your knowledge against you and are probably my favorite enemy design. Completely weak and ineffectual and stagger to all hits... but will freak you out like a mofo before you figure it out.

I invaded some dudes world, we had a red, i was the aldrich faithful, and a grape. We run to the area outside pontiff and theres a white, a gold, and the host all in a line waiting for us
We fucking battle it out, the grape gets sent back home, both phantoms died, the red invader died. it was just me and the host. He fucking RUNS around in circles trying to summon
So I end up standing up on the top area where peoples signs are, and hes down at the bottom at the grass trying to run up the stairs, but i run to cut him off and he just stands there until his friend puts his sign down in the grass, he gets his phantom and sprints at me. I get another red coming in, its the same guy from earlier and we kill him. So satisfying and frustrating at the same time.
