>Civilization VI offers new ways to engage with your world: cities now physically expand across the map, active research in technology and culture unlocks new potential, and competing leaders will pursue their own agendas based on their historical traits as you race for one of five ways to achieve victory in the game.

>EXPANSIVE EMPIRES:
See the marvels of your empire spread across the map like never before. Each city spans multiple tiles so you can custom build your cities to take full advantage of the local terrain.
>ACTIVE RESEARCH:
Unlock boosts that speed your civilization’s progress through history. To advance more quickly, use your units to actively explore, develop your environment, and discover new cultures.
>DYNAMIC DIPLOMACY:
Interactions with other civilizations change over the course of the game, from primitive first interactions where conflict is a fact of life, to late game alliances and negotiations.
>COMBINED ARMS:
Expanding on the “one unit per tile” design, support units can now be embedded with other units, like anti-tank support with infantry, or a warrior with settlers. Similar units can also be combined to form powerful “Corps” units.
>ENHANCED MULTIPLAYER:
In addition to traditional multiplayer modes, cooperate and compete with your friends in a wide variety of situations all designed to be easily completed in a single session.
>A CIV FOR ALL PLAYERS: :^)
Civilization VI provides veteran players new ways to build and tune their civilization for the greatest chance of success. New tutorial systems introduce new players to the underlying concepts so they can easily get started.

Additional Mechanic Info (as gathered from articles)

What we know about Cities so far

>Instead of taking up a single tile, cities can now expand across multiple tiles
>Everything is now placed on the map, blowing the cities apart. All of the upgrades that you build are now spread across the landscape in the area of control of each city.
>Each City is now comprised of districts
>There are a total of twelve district types, each with a different role and different bonuses with the terrain, limited by population
>Cities can still control up to 36 hexes but the number of improvements that they’ll need to work the land has been reduced, with districts moving in to fill the gaps.
>City upgrade paths now revolve around a matter of geographic practicality.
>The happiness level will be focused on a city level, rather than on a global basis across your civilization
>Harbours can be built on water tiles (additionally "If you do, you can’t build something else in that tile, like a Wonder")
>City tile limits are the same
>Districts can be containers for additional buildings (holy sites that will eventually house religious buildings such as churches or temples)

What we know about the Buildings so far

>Harbour
>Holy Site - Bonus if built near mountain or woods
>Industrial Zone
>Military Encampment - Where your military buildings go (Barack's, Stables), can not be built next to your city
>Center
>Research Campus - Bonuses if built near Jungle, Rainforest and Mountains

What we know about the Wonders so far

>Wonders now also exist on the map, each taking up their own tile.
>Wonders have terrain requirements
>Stonehenge - Must be built near Stone
>The Colossus - Must be built near coast
>The Great Lighthouse - Must be built near coast
>The Pyramids - Must be built on Desert

Science

>Every technology has its own realism-based mini-quest, which speeds up research when completed, providing a substantial boost to its progress even if the player hasn’t reached it on the tech tree yet. For instance, founding a coastal city or building ships will accelerate related nautical technologies
>For example, the masonry boost requires stone blocks and quarries. You can research that tech by hand without access to stone, but if you can find a quarry site and get one up and going, you unlock the tech boost and that gives you half of the research points needed for masonry
>Tech-boosts called "Eureka Moments"

Combat and Diplomacy

>Diplomacy will be overhauled but Firaxis aren’t ready to talk about the specifics of that just yet
>Diplomacy begins very informally, with the sending of gifts, basic trading and declarations of war. Eventually becomes formalised and more complex as embassies and their ambassadors spread across the world.
>There will be more than one way to declare war.
>Support units can now be embedded with other units, like anti-tank support with infantry, or a warrior with settlers. (These are units that are more sensibly depicted as special equipment embedded with a larger unit rather than standalone figures on the map.)
>Similar units can also be combined to form powerful “Corps” units.
>Units can now be organised into a formation, which means they’ll always move together rather than having to be shuffled across the map one at a time.
>Formations can be applied to large collections of military units or civilian units and their escorts.
>Bombers can destroy improvements/districts
>Diplomacy made to focus less on warfare as time goes on.

AI

>AI is said to have been improved
>Every AI leader in the game now has a set of agendas – personality quirks that inform how they approach the game
>AI characters will change over the course of a game, based largely on how you interact with them.

Other Mechanics:

>Fog of War looks like a map; areas you explore look like a hand drawn map in areas you've already explored.
>Players will be aided with a color code system, so they can drop pins on certain tiles in order to remind themselves that this might be a great place for a factory, some time in the future.
>Religion, Archaeology, Trade Routes and Espionage are confirmed to be in the base game
>Great Works, with "gorgeous" new presentation and interactivity
>Tourism and cultural victory type dynamics are back
>One victory type removed, one added, and steps to get to others changed

Engine

>Civ VI will be running on a brand new engine
>Civ VI will be far more moddable because of said engine (and is stated to be more moddable than Civ V, although that's not hard).
>New Multiplayer modes intended to be completed within a single session of a few hours.
>For example, a campaign that starts at the beginning of the middle ages, and runs until the end of the Renaissance.
>From there, a specific victory condition is added – for instance, the player with the strongest religion wins.
>Every building in the game is modelled.
>Can zoom down to the level where you can see see birds flying around the building

>According to the IGN video, Gandhi's gonna have some friends in terms of people you love and hate. Additionally the Sphinx, Great Wall of China, Colosseum, and Forbidden Palace were described as "two World Wonders and two Unique Improvements, but it's not clear which is which." I personally believe that the Great Wall belongs to China as a UI and the Colosseum belongs to Rome (two Chinese wonders are listed there). A border wall for China is especially innovative.

Fuck that, there's plenty of life left in Civ5 and BE not to get this until its all bundled together in the GOTY bundle at a 60% discount.
Also, pic related. Why they've never gone back and tried to expand on what they've already perfected is beyond me.

>>337402118
I'm not a fan of how they nickle and dimed Civ V with DLC either. Early Access gets a lot of shit, but at the end of the day you usually get a full game out of it for the original price you payed. This "base" game at launch, patched in features trough DLC thing is both greedy and dishonest. Just extend the fucking development time and charge more at initial release.
>>
Anyone else hopes they revamp the espionage completely? It was useless in V. They should just steal Endless Legend's capabilities.

Maybe keep the "favors" system from BE too, but revamped as well.
>>
>>337401853
EA owns SMAC so they can't make a direct sequel. As to why they never tried to implement things like terraforming, decent unit customization and good OC donut steal leaders in BE? It's simply because they're retarded.
>>
>>337402287
It's nice to have regardless
>>
>>337402547
It's more because Civ5's engine can't handle terraforming

which by the way, civ6 looks like a reskinned civ5 so far so it's probably going to be another BE as far as engine capabilities go

I am curious as to what the leader cutscenes will look like. Will they be normally proportioned or full-blown caricatures?

Guys. I want to get into an RTS. I loved playing Rise of Nations years ago.

Which Civ should I get if I just want to play Single Player? 3, 4, or 5? I keep hearing different things about them, that one is better than the other for X and the other's better for Y... I just don't know which to pick.

I want a simple one. I'm thinking Civ 5 is the best b/c it's the latest one and probably looks best, too. Civ 3 came out in 2001. Their "modern age" must be outdated to our times today.

I never really understood the hate for making a game accessible. As long as they aren't dumbing down the mechanics it shouldn't be an issue. The UI improvements they made from 4 to 5 were fantastic.

Do you seriously think people who play CoD and BF will look at Civ VI and think "yeah that's my kind of game"?
>>
>>337405704
3 4 and 5 are all pretty different from each other actually, but imo they're all good. Just get the complete packages.

I'd say play 5 so that 6 won't feel out of place as it seems it's gonna grow from it.
>>
>modded civ 5 is a fun and a great deal

optimal strategy is just play civ 5 until the reviews are in for civ 6, why pre-order?

Age of Wonders 3 is great too, i find AOG3 easier and faster to play with friends.
both games have the problem of, if you have too many AIs or if you play for several hundreds of turns the AIs turns will take minutes, which renders the games unplayable.

Yeah, we need to stop this casual shit. Civilization should be a HARDCORE series for HARDCORE people such as ourselves. All of the gameplay should be done through spreadsheets sent via fax machine. The graphics should be detailed enough for me to see a droplet of sweat running down Catherine's tit as she spreads out on a couch in front of her fireplace in a lascivious pose. My TITAN X should melt through my case trying to render individual blades of grass that I will only look at once. I will not be happy with this game until I am of a select few who can enjoy it, thereby giving me a sense of superiority that I can't attain otherwise.

>I wonder why Americans are so offended by titties but are fine showing a persons brains all over the floor from a gunshot.

It's a common misconception. Next to nobody in the US gives a single shit whatsoever about nudity/sexual imagery. The companies in the US that refuse to show even a nipple in a classic piece of art in their branded presentation know this as well and they don't blur shit because it might get them an angry letter or two from a couple obese moms living in Swampass, Arkansas... They choose to blur it because advertisers, investors, donators, and presenters know that the smallest minorities are the most vocal.

Basic cable in the US is legally allowed to show whatever they want at any time. Yes, it's true: Nickelodeon and TLC could air hardcore interacial gay dungeon porn 24/7, 365 without a single fine given or law broken. They care about the bottom line, and if they're getting a check for 500,000 USD from Tide Detergent and Tide receives obese southern mom letters enough to where some inbred Louisiana church forms a boycott of Tide, the few thousand dollars lost (which is less than a drop in the bucket to them) just isnt worth advertising on those channels in their eyes. They want to remain "family friendly happy mommy" etc in their products, or else another company will come along and be as strict with their placement as Tide refused to care about and eventually, years from now, take over that chunk of the market.

No one gives a shit. I'd argue that there are fewer people who give a shit about tits on TV than their are violent Tumblr whores throwing blood at the men at a LGBT presentation just for being men. It's capitalism plain and simple; albeit taken to the extreme in this case.

As soon as the Diabetic Bibleboy states in the deep South either have a generation of kids where the average IQ is above 70 or all die off from chronic Blue Drink syndrome, Tide will whip out the tittays.

Yeah, it looks cartoony to a point, oversaturated as fuck, and the people look like action figures made of plastic while the environment looks like paper mache and clay miniatures.

My justification: why even fight it? I've accepted that my fanboyism for Civilization is far too powerful for me to accept recognize legit criticism at this point. No matter how shitty the game is, I KNOW I'll put at least 70 hours in before expansion 1 ever comes out. >"One thing we wanted to do was make sure you could tie units together. In Civ 5, it was tough to escort your settlers across the map because you couldn't tie them to a military unit," says Beach. Additionally, Beach notes, armies were perhaps a little too spread out. "When you need to concentrate your force to take out a city, everything being on its own tile was a problem at that point."

>Beach describes support units as, "something that was part of your military force before, that really shouldn't have had to take up a tile." As the name suggests, it's supporting equipment: battering rams, siege towers, anti-tank guns and anti-air guns. "All the stuff that's like special equipment for you units. In Civ 5 you had to have a separate tile, but we've gone away from that.

>>
>>337417137
>“You’ve hit on one of the main themes. We want to break people out of their consistent playstyles. When we look at the way people play, we see certain strategies that are used again and again – they’re the best practice for the early game or the mid-game. We’re calling the new approach to technology “active research” and it takes a sledgehammer to the old method, to stop people from doing the same thing every time they play.

>“Your situation on the map is going to influence how you approach the tech tree for the first time. In previous Civ games, you picked what you wanted to research and then people worked at it. It wasn’t particularly interesting and it wasn’t integrated with what you’re doing in the world, so we looked for a way to tie research into what your civilization is doing out in the world and on the map.

>“In Civ VI, almost every node on the tech tree has a boost attached to it – kind of like a miniature quest that you can fulfill to speed up the tech. For example, the masonry boost requires stone blocks and quarries. You can research that tech by hand without access to stone, but if you can find a quarry site and get one up and going, you unlock the tech boost and that gives you half of the research points needed for masonry.”

>Your geographical situation should always influence the short- and long-term goals that mark your journey through history.

>“Think about naval research – [in previous Civ games] you could research sailing and navigation, even if you’re landlocked in the middle of a continent. Now you can still try to do that but it’s going to take you forever. It’s usually more sensible to hold off on that until you actually have found the ocean, so you can settle a city on the coast to unlock the first boost toward sailing. Then maybe you need to build fishing boats to boost the next naval tech.

>“You can’t just burn through the tech tree the same way in every game because the map is going to force you to think through things.”

>And the same should be true of construction and improvements. With cities now spreading across the tiles they control, it’ll be more important than ever to specialise, using the land to your advantage. As with research, the districts that make up a city – and there are twelve types of district in total – can take advantage of geographical features. Beach explains:

>“Where do scientists study? One good place is near diverse types of life, so a scientific campus will gain bonuses if it’s near a rainforest tile. And maybe they’re trying to figure out how the stars and heavens work, in which case an astronomical observatory might be a good idea. That’s going to get a bonus if it’s placed near a mountain.”

>Sticking with the example of a city specialising in science, all of the buildings, whether labs, libraries or universities, will require a specific type of district to support them. Rather than having a city surrounded by mines and railroads, funneling cash into the city centre to fund research, Civ VI will see research campuses and other districts placed around the city, using the lay of the land to their advantage where possible.

>The interface will help you to decide on a spot for new cities, as in the past, recognising which tiles will work best for different district types, taking into account everything from their terrain type to adjacency bonuses that make district-building like “a little puzzle”. Cities can still control up to 36 hexes but the number of improvements that they’ll need to work the land has been reduced, with districts moving in to fill the gaps.

That reminds me. When I was at a much younger age, I looked at the Civ 3 boxart in my local gamestore, and looked at the cool graphics of the city overlay, which really just was a nice detailed but purely cosmetic map you could see of your city, without any of the ordinary graphics presented. Pic related is what I saw, and I expected it to be a different game entirely

That's basically what brought me into civ, and I've been a fan of the series since. It's funny, because if younger me saw the ACTUAL graphics, I would have never played the games.

I'll stick to Civ V, the TRUE civ game...Civ has never had cartoony graphics

Take Warhammer, and maybe make it a bit cartoony because it's 1994 and everything needs to be saturated to be seen through those dank monitors. That gives you Warcraft's aesthetic. Now, somewhere down the line, take Warcraft and simplify it a bit because you can't are yourself to make complex textures, and that gives you League of Legend's aesthetic. Finally, take Lol's style, compress it into something so vibrant and blocky that everything looks like an action figure and is easy for weak hardware to render (like a phone), and you get the style aped by Clash of Clans which many mobile games have copied their style from since.

civ 5 is not the first title with a "serious" art style. civ 4 and 3 also had "serious" (eh, not that cartoony) graphics. so is be or alpha centauri from same class. i'm saying, simplification of graphics is taking a different approach which is not necessarily bad, but not promising either.
>>
>>337419914
>civ is quite a heavy franchise to be treated like a cartoony way

Civ has always been a franchise that treats itself with a level of tongue-in-cheek self-awareness, it has ever since Sid himself created the series. The graphics are not what determines how this game will be, it's what group in Firaxis is in charge of this title, because THAT has always been the determining factor.

Yeah but that's why Civ V is terrible. There's literally no point in not doing the same shit over and over again, because it's so badly made. Why does it even have a random map generator? The optimal strats all work independently of the map you're playing on. It's no tlike Civ IV where you have to adapt and to react to the what the map and diplomacy throws at you.

Seriously, play to win deity in Civ IV, then do it in V.

You literally can't just come in with some 'build order' and win in Civ IV. That's not how the game works.

I just lose all motivation when I'm playing V because nothing in the game matters.

The guy in that tweet is talking about broken multiplayer. It's very rare for a game to actually have multiplayer made so badly that it literally doesn't work. And yet that's what we got with V and it wasn't fixed for a long ass time, and it's still shitty as fuck it just barely works. It's cause they didn't fuckin care about multiplayer, it's not wht they were interested in.

They started working on Civ IV's multiplayer from the beginning and it works like you'd actually expect it to.

I just don't see how they could plausibly highlight multiplayer in an announcement and have it literally not work as in Civ V.

Why do they even feel the need to create new Civ games when they already made the perfect one?
>>
Just my two cents, it's not that I don't like the new art style, it's just that I am kind of disappointed that they chose that over a more realistic look.

It's not like the other civs games look that realistic, but just imagine if they published screenshots with that badass cinematic trailer that went for a photorealistic route. Imagine if the map looked like a satellite view of the terrain and an option to make the map look like a day/night cycle so you can see your cities light up and shit. The tech is there, even if it can't look perfect, I think they could pull off something that could have looked incredible.

Instead we have this.

'stacks of doom' are a meme
Nobody complained about them before V came out.
Civ IV has this thing called collateral damage.

Use siege units to damage multiple units on a single tile.

In Civ 1 and 2, if a stack that wasn't defending a city got attacked and lost a unit, the entire stack was destroyed.

It's really never been a problem with the game.

You should listen to that Jon Shafer (civ V lead designer) interview where he talks about how he thinks stacks are actually 'objectively better' (his words) for civ combat.
>>
>>337416084
The British Isles in Civ, even on the biggest map size, are no bigger than 25 tiles. London would encapsulate Stonehenge if you settled it on the Thames.

Similar to AoE but it goes from ancient to modern era.

However the gameplay is not civvy at all. It just has the civ aesthetic in the form of the multi-age spanning tech tree.
Gameplay is pure RTS, not a bad game.

You should have the option to stack if necessary. There is a hard counter.

Restricting options is for mongoloids.

They could have solved this a better way but that would require a modicum of effort.

Employ an attrition system like Grand Strategy games, which could be affected by promotions and technologies.

I stopped thinking that AAA developers could handle making games for non-retards though around 2008.

If you didn't have to sacrifice some of your siege units to do some heavy damage, your siege numbers would just add up and get ridiculous, leading to an actual 'stack of doom'

Thing is, pre Civ V wars are an empire management game. You experience casualties as a part of wearing down defenses. It's not like Civ V where you can teidously and painfully defeat the deity AI's carpet of doom (infinitely worse than 'stacks of doom', which were never any kind of problem, ever).with just a handful of units, rarely if ever experiencing casualties.

You realize 1upt is the root of so many of civ v's problems right? LIke everything from terrain to improvemetns to wonders being nerfed?
>>337430592

>>
>>337431719
what the fuck does that have to do with anything?
Try thinking about the actual game for a second, instead of what you imagine the graphical units are 'representing'.

Ok.
in Civ, you harvest 'production' from tiles which are worked by your cities. You use this production to create units. OK?

If a unit doesn't die, that means it doesn't die. OK? That means you don't have to replace it by spending more hammers on more units. Get it? What you're imagining in your head as 'lots of units being represented by one' is actually one unit in the game rules.

if you can build 6 units and conquer the map, you're compeletely underminding the entire game, by making land and your actual fucking civ and how you manage it inconsequential to the outcome.

Reminder 1UPT ruined Civ 5 and Sulla was right about everything he said.

>Civ5 suffers here from a mistaken attempt to balance "Tall" empires against "Wide" empires. This is something that the designers mentioned frequently in the buildup to the game's release, and the Civ5 community discusses this all the time as well. It's a baffling concept that makes absolutely no sense when discussing gameplay in the empire-building genre of games. Why in the world would you want to create a game where a "Tall" empire of four cities would be as strong as a "Wide" empire of twenty cities? If that's the case, then what's the point of expanding at all? It's much easier to sit on a handful of cities, after all. An empire-building game where small nations are just as good as large nations is an empire-building game where expansion becomes pointless. This is exactly what Brave New World has done: it has undercut the entire purpose of the genre! Let me make use of an analogy here: arguing that "Wide" and "Tall" empires should be balanced is like arguing that small armies in Starcraft should be able to compete on even terms with large armies. I mean, that sounds incredibly stupid, right? The purpose of Starcraft is to build an army to kill your opponent. Sure, there are units designed to counter mass spam of cheap units, but the basic principle remains that bigger armies are better. If you could defeat a 200 supply army with a 50 supply army, then what would be the point of building units at all? Such a mechanic would destroy the entire raison d'etre behind Starcraft. Brave New World does the same thing with respect to expansion. A handful of cities performs as well as a large empire, making expansion and warfare pointless. This mistaken attempt to balance "Wide" and "Tall" strikes a blow at the very heart of why people play the Civilization games in the first place.

Fuck off, you screeching retard. The only time anything comes remotely close is is Germany gets buttraped by barb camps in the early game. Even Zulus players will only shit out 9 Impis max, usually ranging from 5-6 average. That's one of the strongest units in the game. Hell, China players, using a defensive layout, will shit out maybe 13 Chu-ko-nus tops, and that's to defend 3-4 cities, so roughly 4 per city. That's not anywhere close to those massive carpets of waste.

'range' as a concept only exists for air units pre V. Civ combat pre V was designed to function without range, so your point is moot. In fact, you seem to be entirely motivated by a kind of simulation or aesthetic rather than something to do with the actual game mchanics. I understand if you like the aesthetic of ranged units. But you should try to actually make an argument if you want to insist it's necessary for civ.
>defending siege units taking damage when attacking
again, you list no reason as to why that's bad
>defending cities being completely defenseless without units
Again, civ is designed with no need for cities defending themselves. In fact, cities defending themselves was tacked on as a bandaid to fix the another of 1upt's unintended negative consequences
>defending units being completely wiped out after one battle
Again, you don't give a reason as to why that's a bad thing.
In civ V, 1upt means there are less units, so obviously that's a necessity in that game. But there is no need for it in the other civ games, so what is your point.

It was -75% maintenence, including tiles, buildings, and distance from capital.

A Rauthus built in America would reduce the cost of founding a city cross continental by that much. Most civs require Communism to adequately colonize the Americas in the mid 1700s, but the HRE can keep any other economic tenant instead due to that building.

The UU was also good to solo-defend entire cities.

>>
>>337433582
If you've only played V, your expansion is kept in check not by global happiness but by city maintenance.

THere are 2 parts of city maintenance:
distance from capital (your early cities should be close to the capital, unless you have a strong commerce resource like gold or gems in your capital, in which case you can afford an aggressive forward settle if you have to for whatever reason) and number of cities maintenance.

Each city is an economic investment. In the short term, setlling a city hurts your economy, but after the city starts to pay for itself and then more, it turns out to be an economic boost in the long term.

Only exception to this rule is great lighthouse coastal cities, which often instantly pay for themselves.

1. don't settle jungle cities until you have iron working/calendar
2. don't settle cities that lack food resources until civil service (these are the sitties that kind of 'fill out' the spaces betewen your major cities'

settle at a steady rate. don't settle too fast or you'll tank your economy hard

I thought civ iv was fun until I got to the combat

and then everything was awful and I would rather play literally any other strategy game, even pure strategy, non tactical ones without any real combat like paradox's shit.

civ v was worse in a lot of other aspects but I far preferred the 1upt. I think the changes they are making in civ vi are a good change. They're not radically changing the basic formula, but the introduction of corps and armies seems like it will help stop the later game from being overly flooded with "carpets of doom."

I'm not expecting anything from vanilla VI though. I'll wait till it gets expansions and patches down the line before plunging in.

Post'em lads.

I thought I was completely done with Civ V until I discovered CBP mod 2 years ago and I've sunk in another 400 hours since then.

>stacks of doom are a meme
>nobody complained about them before V came out

this is total bullshit. tons of people hated them in iv, and they honestly ruined the game for me before v had even been announced.

Why the fuck are they going to waste my processing power on this? I don't play Risk so I can get out my magnifying glass and ogle the mold seams on the plastic pieces.

Everything. The combat was a gigantic mess. It was completely unfun. Wars felt needlessly penalizing for one thing. They negatively impacted everything you did in addition to already negatively impacting you due to needing to spend build orders on units. Sitting on defensive tiles made units stupidly strong, especially archers or variants thereof. The way siege weapons worked was retarded. Seeing gigantic stacks or several stacks of variant units with 5 different unit types was retarded.

Every time war happened, the game instantly became unfun. Every other aspect of Civ IV was good except the godawful combat. Fortunately, some people made mods that fixed or touched up the system a little bit, but I still far prefer Civ V's system.

I'm a person who enjoys "tactics" RPGs though so it might just be that Civ V's system is more comfortable to me.
