Silent Hill 2 is relevant because of its excellent methods of engrossing the player deeply within its game. It does this through nail-biting atmospheric tension. Do I go down that hall or look for supplies first? What if there's something behind me? Oh shit what was that? The monsters and town could have nothing to do with the characters and the game would still be fine.
Now, the story complements the game nicely, no doubt, but it isn't what makes the game great.
