Eh, I've tried to play through X-Com 2 on several occasions and it seems no matter what tech tree I focus on or what strategy I take in the beginning, by mid-game the aliens are totally overpowering me, which starts a cascade of dark events that make recovery seem totally impossible.

I tried rushing weapons and armor and I didn't have enough power or relay spots to get to missions and my supplies were too low to continue upgrading, I spent months building out a relay and power station and by then I was way behind in tech

I tried building relays and spreading out first and somehow I ran out of fucking advent corpses so I can't make a lot of the good weapons, plus I've got no elerium

I tried rushing psy ops and things just did not go well.

I played through it on Commander difficulty last week.
I like the game, but I'm not gonna start a new game because of some new DLC. I probably won't touch it again until it's gotten some major expansion.

The theme of the new DLC is alien hunting.

After completing each mission, there is a chance that one of three "boss" type aliens will show up and proceed to kick your squad's ass.

These boss aliens can always escape if you are too inefficient and live to fight you again another day.

Killing these aliens gets you special bonus loot.

Focus on guaranteeing enemies won't be able to take a single shot at you. Offense really is the best defence. This is part of why the early game is more nebulous, you don't have the equipment, options, or accuracy to ensure that a lot of the time.

Also learn about the pod system so you can engage encounters on your own terms, and what abilities/items/structures/etc. are most useful.

Opinion disregarded. The timers shouldn't effect your gameplay at all. If they do, you suck. The only timer that you should ever even get close to failing are the VIP missions, and those should be timed.

I'm not having trouble with in-mission tactics, anon, I'm having trouble with tech trees.

If I focus on making sure I have a power station and a relay so I can get enough supplies for the mid-game I don't have tier-2 armor or skulljack or even some of the mag weapons before mid-game when you need all of that shit.

If I focus straight on weapons or armor I get stuck in one area of the globe while all the avatar missions spawn in places I can't reach, I spend months getting to one, and by the time I do I'm behind in tech again.

At any given point, the game has already 'rolled' for the next 'random' action that will occur, specifically to prevent people from just reloading every time they miss. When you reload a save, you also reload that stored roll, and the next 'random' action will use it. If you repeatedly reload and take the same shot (or do the same hack), without doing anything else, it will use that saved roll, and you will get the same result. The game also cheats in your favour with the RNG

My problem with the RNG is that sure shot aren't sure enough, and low percentage shot can wreck too often, by law of statistics

Here is what you need to do. First, take rapid construction for your base, so when you are at base, everything gets cut in half. Then you are going to want to try to get as many engis as you can. Yes this is completely random and sucks, but you are going to have to deal with it.

My last run, I got five before I even opened up any other areas.

If you were unlucky with power placement, just put it on the top floor and switch it out later.

Once you have four engis, focus on sci to bring those days down and rush Mag, ignore everything else. Hope the black market has the rush mag shit. After that, it's all smooth sailing.
