This is the thing right here. Doom 1 and 2 let you run out and aggro entire stages of you were retarded. Unsure how you could convert old styled Doom levels into a newer game without running into checkpoint/frame rate issues but they should thing if something. Quickly running around, dodging enemies, and fighting off big groups in complex stages is what made Doom.

That and the cinematic take downs look bad.

The SSG was added in Doom 2 and I don't think Doom 2 originally supported alt-fire. Also, the SSG had a different and wider spread pattern than the regular shotgun.

Both strafe jumping and rocket jumping weren't planned in the original Quake but the community figured it out. Quake 3 was then designed entirely with both strafe-jumping and rocket jumping in mind. They could have easily patched it out by then but they didn't and had no intention to. Hell they could have patched it out by Quake 2. Quake 2 even had a secret that could only be found via rocket jumping.

So far people have been pretty worried about BF1 actually, given that the promotional statue seemed to be a mish-mash of sides (the only explanation for the black soldier that makes sense to me so far is that it's a French soldier who picked up weapons that weren't his). As for gameplay we have no idea yet, but Battlefield games are usually alright compared to other series.

The kind of movement system in Quake III is a crutch that supplants good positioning and common FPS sense at lower skill levels. The speed alone provides a shield for the player, all because he learned how to wiggle in just the right way while jumping around. Of course, at the highest levels of play all skills become equally important, but at lower levels such speed only works to overwhelm the other basic parts of an FPS to the detriment of the game's overall depth.

Glitch / strafejumping for the sake of "muh speed" has been a cancer upon the old FPS genre. It provides a mindless yet extremely effective means of protecting oneself in the game. It is a defense that is always present and always available so as long as the player can autistically integrate the same motions over and over into the usual play of the game. It adds nothing intellectual to the gameplay.

Compare to game where such speed is allowed but much more controlled and restricted, lets take Advanced Warfare for example. The jetpack does recharge pretty fast and allows the player to move almost to the same speeds, but only in short bursts. This means that the player has to THINK about when is the right time to actually make use of that speed, not to simply have that advantage 24/7 without ever having to pay any further attention to it.

That makes for a plain dumb game that caters more to people who have really bad positioning and possibly also aiming skills, where they may happily feed on the bottom where all the commoners live.

D44M graphics actually look like a modern game when you look at shit close up, in comparison RAGE and Wolfenstein are blurry messes that honestly have lower detail than Doom 3 despite being 10 years newer. Its not like PS4 suddenly got a VRAM upgrade to make it so they can increase the texture detail.

in doom 1 and 2 you can go fast from the beginning, which leads to a more enjoyable and skillful experience, giving the player the ability to take on nearly any enemy in the game (except archviles who work on LoS) if their dodging ability is sufficient with only the starting weapons. That's improved in D44M though. I think that the projectiles a little bit slow so the player can dodge them a too easily, but overall it is better than the random chance of getting hit with the old Doom enemies.

Doom 1 & 2 suffers from precisely the same speed problem except it is a simple button toggle to go fast. Why did the speedrun community take such strong form around Doom? Because the player could outrun most projectiles, that's what. The speedruns were partially reliant on the fact enemies were so slow and the player was so fast, a large portion of the gaming community started playing Doom to avoid enemies entirely, the exact opposite of what you'd expect an FPS to be about!

Once KB+M started becoming a thing, vanilla Doom 1 & 2 turned out to be painfully easy games. Early gamers were retards who ran out in the open and relied entirely on speed and unpredictability to survive, which Doom caters to. If you go back and play D1 and 2 like more modern military shooters (unless the game forces you into a melee), the game will be a complete breeze. Only mods and extreme overkill custom levels have presented any sort of challenge for a modern gamer in Doom.

A more manageable pacing for Doom 4 makes more sense and will be beneficial to the difficulty. A slower player and more maneuverable enemies will always make a game harder (see: FEAR no-slow-mo runs). That's not to say that it looks all that challenging anyway and that the multiplayer isn't completely fucked up for different reasons than player speed, but every little bit helps.
