I ran around the snake and up the ridge to the bonfire. didn't even know there was a another way into the tomb until I had already shut down the ballista and killed all the crabs.

Armor isn't as useful as you might think, it's mostly for fashion.
Patience is key, rushing will get you killed.
Dodging is often more valuable than blocking, but blocking will still save you if you don't have the confidence.

The exact positioning is difficult, but it's possible. Once you do so, it'll shoot lightning over the wall at the boss then give you the bone shard when the boss dies. It's hard to do it if the ballista is still working, so turn it off first.

You're fine, the series just has a steep learning curve. I beat Dark Souls 1 in 50 hours but six of that was me repeatedly dying to the second boss.
Just keep at it. There are basically four strats to cycle through when trying to kill a boss:

The damage absorption percentage is misleading and doesn't represent the actual percentage of DA. After 20% you start seeing diminishing returns and after 30% almost nothing.

it doesn't matter if there were diminishing returns at 10%, 10% mitigation is effectively equal to a bunch of points in vit and is positiviely correlated with total health meaning that it's effectiveness is further increased as health rises. Mitigation trumps raw health

Most light armor gets you up to at least 12% and the steel ring puts you over 20%. There is almost no reason to put more than 5 points in Vit unless you have a heavy as fuck weapon or you want to dual wield ultra-greatswords, and even then there are three rings that will increase equip load.

You're looking at this the wrong way. It's not 20% mitigation vs 0%. It's 25% vs 20% while the guy with 20% put his points in actually good stats.

No it doesn't. Mitigation and health complement each other. As stated above, the amount of mitigation you gain when you invest points in VIT is rather small, so you're better off investing in VIG first. More importantly, you want to invest in VIG just so you don't end up in a situation where your upgraded estus flasks give more health than your lifebar can hold.
