I came to 4chan in 2006 and /v/ in 2007. I missed the "golden" years, but I can safely say that /v/ hasn't been fun since /vg/ split from /v/, which is when self-moderation ended. I think that was around 2012. Ever since then, the fun kinda disappeared. I've pretty much moved to /tv/ and /pol/ as my main boards. /pol/ right now is pretty much what /b/ was in 2006, except with politics. Every thread is super fun and the posters are really fucking dumb and it's fun to fuck with them and see them react to things.
There really is no difference between pre-gg and post-gg /v/ aside from the fact that mods will ban you for non-pc opinions now and /v/ will throw a shitfit if you even resemble what they think a /pol/ poster acts like, as seen in this thread.
If you want to experience what /b/ was like in 2006, head over to /pol/. It's the most fun I've had on 4chan since 2012. The downside is that the red pill is real and you will probably end up drinking a lot more alcohol when you realize just how fucked up the world is, and how we're all powerless to do anything about it.

The United States is not protecting is sovereignty by invading the Middle East. It is securing resources in its interests because Middle Eastern nations lack the ability to defend THEIR sovereignty.
