It's been proven that even at normal ranges, when the reticule is perfectly over an opponent and you aren't moving, it still has a chance to miss. Hardly the competitive shooter you claim it to be.

Pretty sure Quake Live doesn't have 128hz tickrate, and if it does, then only since recently when the task of running servers was handed over to the community. Official servers were on 40 iirc. You can try this out yourself: Run a practice game, see what sv_fps is, and change it to 125. You'll notice a definitive difference, even though this is just your local machine.

in cs it doesn't really matter how well you know the spray pattern. First off, the gun doesn't fire where the crosshair is anyway, so aiming beyond a certain accuracy is futile. Secondly, the spray patterns are not 100% the same every single time, so no matter how well you know the pattern, you can only compensate so much. Thirdly, most of the spray patterns are more or less the same. Fourthly, it only takes like 3 bullets for a frag anyway. This is not nearly enough for better ability to actually make a meaningful difference. All this makes encounters in CS not much more than a lottery. The retarded hitbox model which really doesn't work that well over the network doesn't help.

If you're on a 60hz screen (vast majority of people) with a shit mouse (anything laser or wireless) and not that good a connection (wireless and/or >50 ping) like probably many people are, server tickrate will really not make a difference.

They had to lower the skill ceiling for their audience to enjoy it and keep playing it.

Having a shitty tickrate is the best solution to achieve that.
