Has Dedede even done anything bad since the first Kirby game?
Seems to me he's basically a hero nowadays, but some people still think he's a villain for some reason.
Probably because you still fight him in nearly every game he appears in.
If he was a good guy then he wouldn't need a castle or an army.

in subspace he was basically trying to save everyone with the de-trophifying badges. the way he went about it just made him look like a villain.

Dedede had his dick phase then eventually left it, metaknight was weirder. In adventure metaknight was trying to train kirby to make sure he was qualified to take on nightmare which was cool but then he has an edgelord phase in superstar for some reason. Luckily kirby beats the shit out of him and he reforms. Now they're both more of friendly rivals to kirby, maybe dedede a bit more though.

He had no reason to attack Kirby in Mass Attack other than to be an asshole. If I remember right, he was also being an asshole for no reason in Tilt 'n' Tumble. I know he appeared as a villain in other early Kirby spinoff games, but I can't remember if they had plots and his role in them would've otherwise been. Spring Breeze = Kirby's Dream Land, but he was a villain again in KSSU's Revenge of the King sub-game.
But yeah, other than that almost every other case of Dedede being a boss was because of a misunderstanding, getting possessed, or the Dedede you face is actually an imposter. The only exception to that was Kirby Fighters Deluxe, but I don't know if you could call him a villain in that game: other than fighting Kirby in what was essentially a grudge match, he doesn't do anything that bad, and one of the unlockable pictures shows them chilling with Dedede's clone army. One of the games describes him as Kirby's best "frenemy", which pretty much sums it up. He's not a bad guy, and he and Kirby are friends, but he's a bit of a bully/selfish asshole and still resents having been defeated by Kirby so many times. He'll occasionally try to pull one over Kirby, but that's about it.

Probably because of the show. But King DeDeDe has never really been the villain, even in the show he was a just a petty, greedy little fuck. Nightmare Enterprises were the real villain(s), and the monsters of the day they sent usually got out of hand, beyond what King DeDeDe wanted them for. In the games, they usually fought because of circumstance, conflicting interests, or straight up mind control. Over the years they've put down their petty differences, and finally become friends, more or less. Now that's character development.Kirby has the deepest lore

Both Metaknight and Kind Dedede are jerks who only help Kirby when a greater threat faces all of them. Because they really only do the greater threats anymore, they're too small time to really do anything bad on their own.
They should at least put in a minigame one of the games where they act like dicks again without any greater threat to bring them together.
