Not much. They're easily the best batch of starters since gen 3. I even like the seal, it just looks bizzare from some still angles. It'll probably look good in motion. Only thing I would change is the over design on the cat. Needs less stripes

What I however ovserved is how the "Pokemon went to shit in gen [...]" shifted a little further from what it used to be. It's sorta like the Zelda cycle, only that it is a shift, and as new kids grow older they will discover the franchise "ruined" for them at a later point.
I recently read someone replying to an image of all the starters with "you can really see how they started to go to shit in gen 5". I remember people saying that when gen 3 came out, I personally held that opinion with gen 4 for a long time.
My personal ranking of the starters now goes:
4 > 3 > 1 > 7 > 5 > 6 > 2
7 obviously still has potential to rise/sink.

dnd is medieval, and Europe always has that old school chivalry thing going on in manga. There's that big castle and stuff. It wasn't super deep but overall matched. The circus theme so far works for 3 starters and the 2 legendaries + battles in circle arenas. It's not "in your face" but so far it works.

The Gen 5 starters had India/China/Japan motifs respectively. East Asia, more closely it was Hindu, Buddhist, and Shinto.
Gen 6 were Warrior/Mage/Rouge. Fantasy motifs.
Gen 7 is Magician, Ringcat, and Clown.

Cat is most definitely Fire/Dark. It has the alchemic symbol for sulfur, which is also known as brimstone. Fire and Brimstone = hell. It's a hellcat. And it'll evolve into a tiger to fulfill the zodiac like the rest of the fire starters. It already has the stripes.
The other two idk, but the current grass type is part flying. And the water might become psychic or something, but idk.

Simplicity is key so I only edited a few things and blocked in the colour a little more. The cat just needed more Robotnik in it's design so that was easy, the owl only needed the beak alteration, and the seal needs to go back to formula.

My problem with modern pokemon designs isn't always overdesign (although they often are), it's that they look fake and plasticky. They look more like toys than animals or monsters. Lots of soft, round anatomy, sharp line designs on the body, and bright colours. Guess it's just changing times and tastes.
I don't really care though because I haven't played a pokemon game since Silver and don't really intend to.

The seal looked retarded at first, but then I saw his animations and the artwork of him doing flips and shit and I think his design fits his personality well now.
The cat needs to be scrapped entirely. It doesn't even come off like a starter it looks like this game's Ratata/Sentret/Luxray etc., the colour scheme is ugly, and the striping is really gaudy.
I honestly think people would stop crying about these designs if Ken Sugimori drew them.

I do agree with you though about Gen 2 though. Pure type gens are worst gens for starters and people give gen 2 a free pass too much because MUH NOSTALGIA. Chikorita is WORST GRASS STARTER EVER and Totodile/Cydaquil are okay to mediocre at best. Even Gamefreak doesn't care about Johto starters considering how long it took for egg moves and hidden abilities to make them passable but still shit compared to their peers.
