The thing everyone forgets is it's not just about giving the audience what they want, it's about giving the audience what they want, at the expense of artistic integrity.

If for whatever reason you manage to like it Re;Birth 2 is much different storywise and changes up the cast for 80% of the game. Re;Birth 3 brings it back. Don't ever touch the spin-offs. Ever.
V-II on PS4 (soon to be Steam) is genuinely the best Nep game there is gameplay and story wise but jumping right into that one you lose out on any characterization.

VII is the best nep game, the newest mainline installment, is a good rpg in general, one of the best games released this year, sold well, and made the series more popular.
Fanbase has nothing to do with anything. The spinoffs are cheap to produce and are mediocre, made by different devs. They are getting better though, for instance, the new Blanc and Neptune game is an improvement over Nep U.

I would say that pandering is more than simply appealing to a demographic, for example, having good gunplay in an FPS wouldn't be pandering because that's the point of the game genre, but having a scene where during a super serious war FPS one of your squadmates comes out as gay (with no prior indiction or relevance) or where your character breaches a room only to run headfirst into some titties, would be.
I think there's a level of... dishonesty in pandering, the thing wasn't added to the game because it makes a better game, it was added to the game in an attempt to appeal to a demographic by taking "the thing those specific people like" and saying "HERE WE HAVE THIS THING ISN'T IT GREAT"

I wish it was that simple. What kills me the most is how the franchise turned from a niche little weeb series with a solid community into this, this fucking meme that it is now. It's almost as bad as with Dark Souls. I really wouldn't mind the games going multiplat and I would love Neptunia U to be on Wii U. I must state that I am full idort with a more than capable PC.
