Hey /v/
Lately, I've been getting into WH40k a bit. From what I've seen and read so far, the lore is amazing and I ocassionaly catch myself reading over the wiki for hours while I should be doing other things.
Now I want to get more familiar with the Warhammer 40k universe, and I was thinking about buying one of the many novels that have been released. The problem is, I have no idea where to start. There are so many books. I'm looking for a book that gives a general introduction into the WH40K universe. A book that shortly describes the different races and their history, the forces of chaos and the warp. Just something to give me some perspective into the great universe of WH40K. Anyone have any suggestions?

The novels are terrible for lore because most writers aren't interested in keeping perfect lore when there's stories to be told. "Oh no, our lasguns are running out of power and we are about to be over-run by the enemy. If only there was some way to charge the powercells, such as placing them in the fires the author has been pointing out for the last two chapters. Nah, better just hope that we get resupplied before we're over-run".
Like the other anon said, start with Horus Heresy for the novels.
If you want to do it Vidya style, Fire Warrior on PS2 gives a good overview of the Tau and is fun for a FPS, while Dawn of War on PC is a decent strategy game which will give you some basic insight into the lore.
For more novels, check out Gaunt's Ghosts, Path of the Seer, Eisenhorn, and Ciaphus Cain for the humor.
No need to buy the books, go to /tg/, they have a megaupload somewhere of the entire 40k library in e-book form. I have it and it's great.

Battlesuits run at peak efficiency just because they have veteran warriors in them, it would be a waste to put some random firewarriror in a battlesuit. It is far more effective to let the less experienced warriors combine their efforts (in volleying for example) rather than to put them all in battlesuits. Although the time when a smaller simpler battlesuit is extremely easy to produce isn't far away I'm sure of it.

Difference is a crisis suit is smaller and operated by one soldier. It increases a fire warriors fire power and ability to move around the battlefield five times or so. Seems like the thing to do, focus on those instead of the crappy infantry suits.

Sometimes you just need the field coverage of several thousands soldiers on the ground. They cannot hope to outfit every single one of them with a crisis suit.
Even if they COULD magically shit out hundreds of thousands of suits from thin air there's still the demand to fight on several fronts at once, logistics of transport and supply for thousands of crisis suits, techniocal maintenance and tons of other issues
Modern wars are often won by logistics, not the bullets. That still pretty much remains true in the future (if not more so)

Download the Inquisitor rule book and use standard 40k models instead of the Inquisitor scale ones. Then treat all distances as cm instead of inches and you've got a lot more robust rule-system than kill-team. There's not nearly enough alien representation however, as GW killed of the IP before any major developments could be made.

Funny thing is, Hellsreach the novel shows this very well. While its exclusively from the Imperials view, their supplies and resources go from strained to completely empty, their supply lines and central HQ devastated. The Guard can't be resupplied with guns or tanks and the Marines are left to fend for themselves.
Meanwhile the Orks are still fighting at maximum capacity and show no signs of stopping.Which is why they win in the end.Was interesting from that perspective at the very least.

UPDATE on the Build + Paint sets coming from GW later this year! We’ve been to talk to the GW guys just now and spoke with the person who is the main contact that is listed on the flyer. GW *are* aiming to get into big-box, high/main street retailers as well as ‘normal’ model & hobby shops.
Box art is not finalized, neither are the actual contents, so the sprues, sprue colors and paint colors are subject to change. I was even asked if the sprues ought to be colored blue or green (I think they should). They’re not aiming these sets at gamers or even 40K players, the guy I talked to reminisced with me about playing with his Airfix models fighting dinosaurs and getting blown up by Action Man howitzers. These are for little kids to spot next to the Airfix sets in hobby and craft stores and potentially bigger retail chains as well.

The original story was in Slaves to Darkness, or The Lost and the Damned. They were two books detailing Chaos and everything about them, but also included information on the Emperor, the Star Child, the Sensei and whatnot. In Ian Watsons Inquisition War trilogy Jaq Draco does infiltrate the palace and meets the Emperor face to face coming to realise that there's thousands of minds in the body, all fragmented and shattered, and that's why the Emperor hasn't gotten better, his soul has shattered back into the individual Shamans that made him. The books were good for lore back in the day, but now they're relics of a much different design philosophy.

Ciaphas Cain novels by Sandy Mitchell give a great overview of the universe and how somewhat normal humans exist in it.
The Space Wolf novels by William King have the best from human to spess mehreen story in the first book.
I wouldn't go near Horus Heresy until you've read some of the above.

It was insane. The dance-off seemed like it would last forever due to both being this good. And the Masque was the best at it and Slaanesh had a reason for making her his most favorite dancer before he exiled her.
To be precise, the Masque somehow managed to infiltrate said troupe (master of disguise it seems) and then bewitch everyone with her dance (both the Harlequins and the audience). Then said Solitaire challenged her to said epic dance off and they danced for six days and nights non-stop until the Daemonette missed a step that caused the spell to break.

En masse, charged or killshot sure, it has some penetrative value. But if you hit anywhere which isn;t killshot from a single non charged lasgun, that's one dead humie. I know it was a comic but for example in Blood and Thunder, the MC Ork puts up his arm and is being shot by two guardsmen. He manages to stroll through the fire (while saying "OWOWOW") and kill them both. Though their killpower and strength in general tends to vary a lot depending on the individual source.

If you don't want to bother with them then you can just assign them to base or point defense to clear up more supply for marine squads.
