What are good vns?

I've read Stiens;Gate and didn't think too much of it, I've also made my way through Analogue:A Hate Story which kind of sucked also.

I read a lot of books so good translation/writing/dialogue is important - a cool concept and TWEESTS won't cut it.

Thoroughly enjoyed all of them, but I always view them as more puzzle games than VNs
>>
>>337062063

You should try Danganronpa, another puzzle game that is not really a VN

I'm looking for a good mystery vn
I've searched everywhere but haven't found much. Are there any that are grim, serious and bloody? I've read Higurashi but that's about all for mystery. I'd like more like it in terms of murder mystery

I'm perfectly aware that 90% of them are shit/don't translate well - as with Anime. I'm willing to go digging for that 10% though. I've found some real gems when it comes to anime even though I first wrote the medium off completely.

>>337061728
I didn't like S;G either. There's a lot VNs that just didn't keep my attention. Only one I've really enjoyed and finished was Remember11. Umineko is another good one, I just haven't had the time to continue it.

It's especially hard to find an enjoyable stuff to read if you don't want any romance kawaii uguu.

>>337061728
If you can stomach unfinished work, there's press switch. It's about a young boy finding a remote that can bend more stuff than just gender. Unfortunately you suffer from being a retard and spineless at times. Where you can actually get raped by your best male friend or female friend and turn into her personal fucktoy using your original body while you're stealing another friend's body. You also steal the girl's piano recital too because you borrowed her knowledge. Hell, even your younger sister brainwashes you after she turns you into a clone of her.

There's only like 3 or 4 fleshed out routes but it's still a good read.

Whats a goodAND short VN?

Something that would easily get me into VNs. Preferrably not romance, but anything goes
>>
>>337063816
I used to recommend that in every VN thread I came across
Glad someone else likes it
>>
>>337063325
It's not directly related to Higurashi just set in the same universe. The only shared character is Bernkastel.

Also Umineko is the longest VN out there atm. Can take around 350 hours with auto on
>>
>>337063349
I personally don't care much for romance, esp the nip variety, but I'll stomach it if there's other stuff going on.

But yeah I can see that being a big barrier for me. Spice and Wolf is a prime example, everything else about the show is golden but the romance completely kills it, people have told me that it's well handled for anime romance. If that's the case I'd hate to see what full kawaii uguu looks like.
>>
>>337062876
Then you need to check out Umineko because it's like Higurashi but it focuses more heavily on the murder mystery plot.
>>
I'd give the first danganronpa a shot, as long you can handle a shit ending and stupid characters.
the second has better writing but lost the confyness the first one had with exploration, along with better polished mechanics and game play.
there's a third one coming out this year, but it's most likely going to be shit
>>
>>337064158
wew lad, that's some undertaking. Wouldn't even take me that long to get through a dense book. I'm about 1/4 Ulysses atm and I've only been at it 10-15 hours tops.
>>
>>337061728
This may be the wrong medium for you if you're specifically just dissecting the writing and leaving everything else. VNs aren't supposed to be the best written and compare to the best of literature, they're supposed to be good overall because of the combination of the prose+audio(ost, sound effects and sometimes voice over)+visuals(character design, artstyle, with the special effects entailed). Also some visual novels like Aselia the Eternal have gameplay.

It's kinda like movies. Some movies have okay script, with dialogues that can make your eyes roll but the way that it's delivered is what makes it specially good.

There are rarely any good translations with VNs in English. So you're going to have to suck it up if you want to experience what can arguably is a better medium than literature itself.
Go on vndb and see the top rated VNs that have been translated.
>>
>>337063036
What are some anime that you think are gems?
>>
>>337063816
Damn, one of the first vns I read, didn't even remember this. Gotta reread it.
>>337064236
self insert romance is a staple of the vn genre, it's uncommon for it not to have some kind of "pick the heroine you like the most" element to it, and then simulate a relationship. You'll probably want to look for vn's on consoles, because they usually have some sort of gameplay draw as well. 07th expansion is really the only creator that I can think of that consistently puts out good stuff that doesn't include that. Basically:>>337064458

Little Busters! is my personal favorite, though it does have the heroine hunting, I personally didn't really care for that and was more interested in the relationships explored in the true ending(that of the protagonist and his male friends). The routes are important for fully understanding the female character's back stories, though I guess.
>>
>>337064458
Like I said, I'm willing to stomach weaker writing -as long as it's not completely abysmal. I enjoy storytelling and like the idea of experiencing it through different mediums.

People say, correctly, that writing in vidya is shit compared to books - but there are still some games out there that do as good a job at telling stories because the properly utilize the medium. I guess what I'm really looking for is VNs that do the same.

Kinos Journey, PlanatES, Mononoke, Cowboy Bebop/Samurai Champloo(for the unconventional fusion of genres), The Big O(when taken as individual episodes, doesn't really come together coherently), GitS(I'm a sucker for cyberpunk).

Also quite enjoyed OPM, nothing too stand out about it but it handled comedy better than most anime and delivered a decent fix of FIGHTAN DUDES without taking itself too seriously.

All pretty entry level but as I said, I'm not too invested in the medium. Any recommendations are welcome.

OP here, people are asking what I'm looking for. Knowing that I'm not likely to find nice prose, realistic dialogue and that comedy doesn't translate well, I can say

-Interesting concepts. Be they fantasy, sci-fi or what have you. Weather novel or deconstructions I'd like to see an idea taken and looked at from unusual/thought provoking angles.

-Lore and world building

-Writing with somewhat western influence/sensibilities. This is something I've found in a lot of my favourite anime, The Big O, Samurai Champloo, OPM. Even GitS to a certain extent.

As flawed as it is, I still like F/SN a lot. Occasional bad writing aside, it was very engrossing and genuinely powerful at times. I watched Zero afterwards and it was a total snoozefest, I was just counting the time until Kiritsugu or Rider came back on screen.
>>
>>337068380
Nothing to do with entry level shit or whatever, the stuff you mentioned has always been popular on there

At most, OPM gets hate because of it's annoying fanbase
and the Ghost in the Shell movies get hate for being massively inferior to the original manga

That's about it really.

There are exceptions, I'll give you that. But look at Battlefront, MGSV, Undertale(not big budget but hella popular). Even in spite of lacrosse and the sci-fi bullshit i'd say anyone getting into VNs should at least give it a shot

>try to read fate/stay night
>protagonist is a fucking retard
>le insane pedobait loli girl meme
>king arthur was actually a woman he underwent a sex change operation so he is your waifu now, have some naked shots of her in the shower
I didn't get very far, but whole thing felt like the author's sexual fantasy wankfest as opposed to an interesting story to me.

Originally the protagonist was gonna be a girl dicked by Arthur and the designs were less moeshit.

How do Hotel Dusk (and 999 and its sequels) compare to Ghost Trick? Ghost Trick really lost a lot of its charm as it dragged on. Almost unbearable dialgogue at times with a myriad of repetitions - seemed like the game assumed a three year old was playing. Character's motivations were off at times and the tweeests left me very unsatisfied.

I really want to call Muv Luv shit, there's so much wrong with it, but the same thing happened to me, I couldn't stop until I finished it.

I didn't like FSN for almost the same reasons at first but I remembered that some guy told me that the first route was crap and the following two were cool. I recomend FSN mostly because I know it's not the best shit ever (sometimes is really retarded and the pacing is fucking terrible), but it's enjoyable. Also, I laughed a lot while reading the sex scenes.

Then 999 isn't for you. It has the same problem, even if you can fastforward dialogue, you can't skip the rooms you already finished in another ending. VLR fixed that but if you really want to have the full experience, you have to play 999 first.

Hotel Dusk is different. I played it about 7 years ago when I was sick in bed for a whole week. It's pretty comfy and there's not repetition because it's more like a point and click game.

Also D4 is basically Swery's take on Ace Attorney Investigations
Policenauts and Snatcher are both good sci-fi ones by Kojima

You might not like 999, but Hotel Dusk is pretty good. Dialogue feels quite believable and there's no repetition. Once you've finished the game you'll be done with it. It's not a long game and the way it's divided into chapters means pacing isn't really an issue. Puzzles are fairly simple.

speaking of which, Planetarian is getting an anime adaptation now, after all these years. I don't know how to feel about this.

How are the puzzles in Hotel Dusk(and 999)? I thought the ghost trick idea was neat but It never really amazed me and looking back it all was either simple or contrived or both. Wasn't really fun to solve the puzzles. Don't mind point and click if it's done well.

In 999, they're basically little mini Myst puzzles, only for the most part a lot easier. More of a focus is clearly on the narrative as opposed to the puzzles.

They're pretty simple. Fun, but not exactly challenging. I wouldn't worry about them being too contrived as they're not really that difficult.

There's no "gimmick" like in Ghost Trick, it's very much your traditional point and click. Use X on Y with additional puzzles based on moving things around(gotta take advantage of that touch screen).
