It isn't competitive despite how hard blizzard is trying to make it competitive. There's too many heroes to balance. It will inevitably end up like smash bros or wow, where only a couple choices are competitively viable and over half the characters are unused in competitive play.
I was really hoping blizz would just make overwatch a casual thing like hearthstone, but in this day and age, with all the CS:GO MLG kids, etc, making a competitive fps is the only way to get it hyped.
And unfortunately there won't be a big team game mode, which is what I'm really missing from TF2. Big team game modes are necessary to play an FPS game casually. If it's not a big team, there's too much personalization and pressure to do good. You can just blend in with the crowd and chill out when it's a big team. Big teams would really suit a casual game like overwatch well. We have consoles to blame for the limitation to 12 players per match.

True to an extent. The defense heroes have tools for area denial, offense is relatively fast heroes to get in and get out to get kills. Support is obviously straight support.
Restricting the amount of heroes from a class would make the game more balanced though which you can't deny. Rein will probably always be picked, mercy as well except maybe a switch to Lucio or zen to push a last point on payload. Probably pharah for mercy mobility, junkrat for the sheer amount of damage he can pump out. See what I mean?

Can you describe the situation?
Some characters are tanks, and just have a shitton of health. And some of those tanks have armor (yellow health) that reduces every instance of damage received by 5 points, making them highly resistant to automatic weapons.
And on top of that, one of the tanks (Reinhardt) has 200 armor, 300 health, AND a 2000 health front facing shield he can activate. Emptying magazines into him while he's blocking you won't do any good at all.
I don't think it's a very competitive game either but it sounds like you just had a rough game where you didn't understand the enemy characters.
