At any given time there is about 60,000 people playing which can go up to 90,000. You can find a match on any day at any time

I'd say a game is dead when you find it hard to find matches

if you get direct hits, the splash damage they do is pretty pitiful unless it's within inches of the target. it's more akin to the direct hit which does a shit ton of damage than the stock.

They both take about 1000% more skill than either TF2 or OW.
>>
>>337038002
Which means you can rocket jump less and makes her boring. Unless you mean against others, which is just a retarded opinion. Soldier has tons of damage, difference being that fights aren't determined in 5 seconds in TF2 and you actually have to aim.

It's actually really simple but the game physics gives you a lot of liberty to play with

OW is the opposite in giving you many more abilities but restricting your uses to very simple things

Look at widowmaker, they could have made her interesting by having a real grappling hook that you can land anywhere on the map and use to sling around and it would take actually skill to reach places, instead you get a lousy "Press shift to get up here" button with a 15s CD
>>
>>337038681
soldiers move like that with shotguns too, they're just limited to about 3 maybe 4 jumps and need to know to land without taking fall damage and where the nearest health pack is gonna be. pyro wasn't intended to have an airblast at first, but they added it and it made the game more interesting just like the gunboats.
>>

>4 map packs in the last 9 months with missions

>>
>>337038592
tf2 went free 2 play in 2011. Needless to say ctf (my favorite game mode) became 24/7 team death match. The huge influx of shitty weapons also broke game balance. (an example is gunboats which allows soldier to be extremely mobile at the cost of very little hp) or charge n targe (completely changes role of demo to a stupid melee class and makes pyro useless against him because of the fire resistence) there are more examples but tf2 is just a garbage. It had its time but we should all just let it die now.

Back during Quake 1 days, where TF originates, those that couldn't handle the other popular modes of DM, TDM, and CTF, went to casual TF because it was the easiest mode to "do good" but not have any real skill.

Keep in mind, that TF2 is a FAR more casualized game than compared to the original TF Quake mod.

Overwatch is just insanely boring for me. Movement is slow and has a pretty low skill ceiling. Every map has so many choke points that it plays out like a spamfest. I wish Valve would just make a Team Fortress 3 already that just learned from all the mistakes TF2 made. The game is nearly a decade old.

The cosmetics were just the icing on the cake. You probably don't remember because you started playing TF2 a few months ago but people stopped mid match to do trades and not to mention a lot of fags were scamming unusuals back and forth.

How it's scamming related? When I got my buds and had low hours I'd get shit ton of requests to trade them, people would often focus on my retarded cosmetic than on the game itself.
>>
>>337035139
But Overwatch is funner
>>
>>337043879

Depends on how you use it, the way I use it is probably differently from most, it is first and foremost a medigun for pocketing, me and a friend have used it for years and both know how to play it to it's strengths and lower the weaknesses. Key is picking and choosing battles and eliminating the enemy quickly, try to always predict damage and pop a charge at the right time. I really hardly ever notice an issue with not being able to fully overheal, with a vaccinator you almost always have at least one charge. Multiple damage sources is definitely a weakness, but more manageable with popping multiple charges, though it does drain you more.
>>
>>337038904

So you're mad because anyone can pick up the game and doesn't have unnecessary complex inputs you can brag about on an anonymous board?

One on one battles and even two on one it's a bitch to attempt to counter even with multiple damage sources, especially if my pocket is playing soldier. Most people aren't smart enough to switch to another damage source and even with that I can usually switch in a moment's notice.

>>337044263
Pocketing implies you're trying to carry, that shit doesn't fly in serious games where everyone is coordinating, you can't 2v6 constantly and expect to win. Sure vaccinator is really good in pubs because you can just shutdown the 1 or 2 good players on the other team but in comp the enemy team isn't going to be a bunch of push overs. For example something a regular medi would do is buff scouts, and send them both down the flank. Your scouts get raped and then they start back capping. Vaccinator has no answer to that.

Me and my friend like to dick around on pubs and for that the vaccinator fits the bill, I guess I should have specified in pubs and non competitive matches the vaccinator is incredibly strong, it's an amazing pocket weapon.

The crux of every argument basically comes down to "you can rocket jump and bunny hop in tf2 so it's better." This completely ignores the fact that only 2 character really take advantage of those physics. The whole argument seems silly when you look at the full game. You can easily argue that medic is simpler than all of the OW supports or that someone like genji is more complex than scout.

>The crux of every argument basically comes down to "you can rocket jump and bunny hop in tf2 so it's better." This completely ignores the fact that only 2 character really take advantage of those physics.
and that's why those characters dominate 6s. you're also ignoring that a lot of thought has to go into how you move as a scout, comparable to tracer maybe buy scout only has his double jumps to get him out of danger while tracer has teleports that can get her away ridiculously fast and the E move which will literally give her her health back and make it so you cant hit her for a few moments.
The whole argument seems silly when you look at the full game. You can easily argue that medic is simpler than all of the OW supports or that someone like genji is more complex than scout.
but when you compare the medic to his counterpart in OW mercy you see a simplification of what the medic has to think about, sure he doesn't have her fly to a team mate but he has to think about how much uber he has and who he should heal based on how recently they took damage. mercy you just have to worry about whether to do the health or damage buff and when to use your ult. there's also the fact that you get penalized for dying as medic in tf2 while in OW outside of not being there to heal your team for a bit there is no huge downside like loosing however much uber you've built. and to the genji vs scout, like i said before the scout has to think about his movement because his doublejump is the the only saving grace he has and he has to get close enough to meat shot or he wont be doing much damage. a;; genji has to really worry about is when to press his counter and when to use his ult, he has the double jump but it lacks the mobility of scout meaning he cant get himself out of trouble with it.

Except is actually very simple. Difficult to pull off, yeah but the mechanics are easy to understand. The big advantage in TF2 is that the Soldier can now do the exact same thing to reach another cap point or he can rocket jump directly up or whatever without any sort of wait all based on the same mechanic. In Overwatch, you have to wait for your cooldown that only ever moves you in a fixed trajectory.
>>

Have you even played overwatch?movement like that just isn't possible, the best you'll get is what's shown in the gif and even that is convoluted compared to just using the ability and then hovering.

Personally, I like playing pubs simply because I get to walk all over people who are bad while also trash the two or three people who know how to play the game.

My only problem is that a lot of communities with decent regular players have died out, so if I want to play against people who aren't idiots I HAVE to play PUGs. PF2 is dead (and I hated their spawn timers), Star's server is never updated and/or dead, 99% of other communities are comprised of a single server (which is full or dead), and Skial is fucking garbage.

I'm saying rocket jumping isn't rocket science and people haven't found anything like it in overwatch, it's just not possible with the movement limitations the game has, the only way you're gonna get skill based movement in that game is if they add a character specifically designed for it. And most of the people who got keys were faggots yes, but you also had people like ster who is a faggot but is really good at rocket jumping. He probably would have been on the lookout for something like that.
>>
>>337050787
it's the cooldown thing which mostly is my issue with OW on this

so many of the skills are arbitrarily limited by cooldowns instead of having other limiting factors which allow you to pull them off in a more free-flowing way

phara basically just pushes a button and then that option is spent for a few seconds, soldier on the other hand can do it whenever he feels like, as many times in a row as he can manage, but it costs health and some ammo

it just feels more interesting to me with the more naturalistic skills even without the dickwaving of whose game is more skillful

They were far from simple though. You can't pick up someone like spy or heavy and expect to do well with him right off the bat. Heavy is one of the most game sense reliant classes and is punished more than anyone else for bad positioning while spy is extremely difficult to be consistently good at because you have to know how every other class thinks and plays and outwit them.

It's the same with OW. Don't pretend like you know the "complex mechanics" of OW in beta. Everyone's garbage, and everyone's learning the game, just like tf2.
>>
>caring about le dead game xD
>>
>>337053185

are you high? The first thing newbies did was pick heavy and eng to mow down hordes or other newbies
>>
>>337053185
yeah but those aren't really mechanical skills, heavy gameplay consists mostly of aiming in the general enemy direction and walking, even though that might be very difficult it's not really hard to do, just hard to do properly

i'm sure OW has some decent game sense requirements in there some where too

though I think it's actually a good thing to have some classes which don't require twitch aim and hummingbird movement skills without being braindead easy
>>
>>337052924
I think the overall complaint about OW is that it has simplified and taken out many advanced techniques, ones that can only be used after some dedicated practice, in favor for a easier to play game.

Personally, I'm of the side that OW is an FPS that is easier for people not familiar to the FPS genre. It limits the impact one very skilled player can have on a match to be similar with a less skilled player.

However, it does emphasize teamwork far more than a game like TF2 does. I think the challenge in this game stems more from team comps and coordination, this game very much punishes players who want to lone wolf, unless they're playing heroes that are specialized for solo play, like Genji.
>>
>>337053352
I'm assuming somewhat competent players, I won't deny the average TF2 player is a colossal fucking retard.

>>337053295

That's not a good thing. It means more people will end up dropping it because they will get bored of the characters. TF2 thrived because of the gameplay and game modes, OW doesn't have that to compete. That said, its a blizzard game so it won't be dying any time soon
>>
>>337053564
>heavy gameplay consists mostly of aiming in the general enemy direction and walking
Not really, the heavy is expected to sit back and guard the weaker classes, deny flankers/bombers, and occasionally help the demo focus down enemies at higher levels of play. A good heavy has to be constantly jumping, repositioning, and backing up to avoid headshots and explosive spam. If you just walk forward and hold down M1 you're a sitting duck.
>>
>>337053584
>However, it does emphasize teamwork far more than a game like TF2 does.

>>
>>337053623
>find it hard to believe
Then you didn't play TF2 when it was 30 bucks, or you sucked. Remember that there's a medic and ubercharge still existed. Also that there's a pyro that is pretty much hold left click and try to get behind them

TF2 was complete casual when it first came out, comparable to OW now, except the main difference is that OW has a ton more selection.
>>
>>337053806
I think he means in the context of public uncompetitive servers. OW allows a max of 6 players on each team so you don't have the same freedom to dick around like you can in a 24 player TF2 server. Centers are a complete fucking joke.
>>
>>337045535
No one's saying that it's complex. People are saying that it's more complex than Overwatch.

Hell, fucking League is more complex than Overwatch. Let that sink in.
>>
>>337053295
Not him but how about you stop pretending that someone is gonna find some magical tech that makes the game more than it is. Face it overwatch is more reliant on juggling your ults and team comp than it is on individual skill, that's fine and all but it means outside of aiming/maps and game sense there are no skills to be learned to make one good at the game. The beta is for all purposes the full game, some people have gotten the collectors edition of the game and the postcards it comes with are only the maps in the beta. Unless they're hiding new Hero's and maps that drastically alter gameplay what you see in the beta is what you get and there are no advanced techniques for individual players to learn outside how to chain their cooldown moves together with teammates.
>>
>>337053972
>Remember that there's a medic and ubercharge still existed.
Really a medic is going to save you from 8 180 damage stickies with no arm time and pipes blowing up at your feet?

That's probably the most desperate comparison there is.

Why are tf2 fanboys so deadset on shitting on OW? I played tf2 but left after manconomy because it was going down the shitter, but put it like this.

On a scale of difficulty, I'd put OW on a 3, and Tf2 on a 5 (quake/ut on a 10, 1.6 on a 8 or 9, cod on a 1).

TF2 is barely anymore complex than OW, but OW is simply more fun compared to the state tf2 is in now. I'd take a slightly easier game that has a bright future than a game that's slowly dying.

Note that I did play UT04/quake/1.6 a ton. So i went into TF2/OW with good aim.

What is "Air Control"?

Is that referring to him just aiming as he flies through the air?
>>
>>337054943

that can literally apply to all of overwatch
>>
>>337055019
Holding A or D while in the air controls your trajectory in TF2, this is used a lot in comp to make yourself harder to hit while bombing as soldier/demo, surfing as medic, or jumping as scout. (double jump locks your trajectory)

Air control doesn't exist in overwatch.
>>
>>337053975
>>337053806
This. Smaller team sizes requires everyone to be together or get collectively fucked.

Also I haven't played competitive TF2.
>>
>>337054573
You seem under the impression everyone has to know the game inside and out before it can be judged, that's not how it works. Even if 99 percent of the community blows and can't figure out how to rocket jump the top players will figure it out and show that it's possible. That's just not happening with this game because movement is restricted to a huge degree , does that make it a bad game? No, but it means you loose the ability for individual players to learn something thus lowering the skill ceiling. I will reiterate once more, people have the collectors edition, what you see in the beta is what you get. Does that make the game bad , nope I still enjoy it but it means the skill ceiling for the individual player is lower than tf2s and more reliant on different aspects than tf2.

TF2 vs. Overwatch threads are 1:1 to USF4 vs. SFV threads.

And when Infiltration and Takido showed those USFIV shitters that they were fucking wrong, everybody shut the fuck up.

Overwatch isn't out yet. You can not say its shallow when it has not been fully explored. Sure, discuss its differences between TF2 and it in terms of execution such as the soldier's ability to do the rocket jump at expense of health versus Pharah and the cost of time, but don't think you know the game before its out.
>>
>p-please come back to hat fortress! I'm so lonely in my idle server :^(
>>
>>337054598
Strats yes , but I'm arguing about movement and individual skill which overwatch is less reliant on than tf2. Like I said in my post overwatch will rely more on aiming, juggling ults and combining cool down skills more than individual player skill for high level play.
>>
>>337055691
>You can not say its shallow when it has not been fully explored.
Okay. So let's say someone explored it for ten months. Like, say, a "professional scene"

Oh, oh oh oh wait. That's a thing. They only play McCree and Lucio because nobody else is remotely viable. Weird. That sounds kinda shallow to me.
>>
>>337053263
is that webm supposed to be impressive
>>
>>337055226
Not really, teamfights pushes and retreats aren't a thing in OW. There are no crit heals encouraging players to fall back for buffs, there's no way to track ults and stacking ults isn't always a good idea so players are encouraged to constantly use them, the maps encourage spamming with so many chokes while also making it hard to flank, and players aren't punished very much for dying. Everyone moves so slowly so it's difficult to catch players by surprise like a flanking scout or bombing soldier would.

Then you look at TF2 the closest thing to an ult is uber which the entire meta is built around which both teams track and make decisions based off that to decide whether to push, wait for picks, or try to force/kill the enemy medic. Crit heals encourage players to not play too aggressively because they can fall back and get another full overheal immediately instead of dying and waiting 30 or so seconds to respawn then jump back to the medic who now has to spend another 10s buffing you because you don't have crit heals.
>>
>>337055691

pure lack of movement based options already makes that way obvious

This would be true if we didn't know through the collectors edition that what you see in the beta is what you get unless they're hiding a hero or a map for release day and even then it'll be a different hero to play it won't change the lack of any game specific techniques needing to be learned.
>>
>>337050926

This is probably the best and most consistent complaint against TF2 nowadays. The unique community with all their unique servers and activity are all dead, replaced almost solely by valve servers and skial pay 2 pubstomp even harder. It's a side effect of Valve turning TF2 into just another autistic cash cow to be sucked dry for eternity, or until we eradicate all Russian shitters
>>
>>337055459

Except people are learning new stuff all the time and people are getting known for specific characters. The game does lack a lot of universal mechanics but there are a ton of character specific stuff

Have you ever seen a 6s soldier or scout play? Have you ever fought one? Scout is almost game breaking because air strafing makes him incredibly fucking hard to hit and soldier has the best mobility in the game period because of it. You can think your safe on a point and then you see this shit flying at you all the way from the other side of the map >>337035139 none of that would be possible without air strafing.

Those are skills that would make him pretty good at most fps, he didn't really have to learn anything new outside when to use his cooldown abilities and what enemies can one shot him. As opposed to a soldier main kn tf2 who has to learn how to rocket jump and juggle with the rockers and shit. Again I don't mean to say the game is bad or the guy is bad , heaven knows I can't fight genjis for shit but he didn't have to learn as much as a soldier main would and he won't no matter which character he picks which means the skill ceiling is lower.

You track them by paying attention to how the other team is doing. They only go up by 3 ways: time, damage done, and healing done. It varies from character to character, but generally you should expect every character to have ult in 2 mins (which is slow). From then on you track it based on a combo of last time used and how well that character has been playing. It's not that hard but it takes a bit of conditioning

But you can never know for sure and that's 6 different ults you're estimating. How could you know when to push if there's a possibility mercy, zenyatta, or lucio has their ults? It would be meaningless. There are too many factors to account for to ever make a 100% smart decision. TF2 there's actual math too it that many teams build their strategies around and you can add up all the factors to know whether your push will be successful or not.
>>
>>337058263
You cannot see any of those numbers. Ults are mechanic from assfaggots where you can actually track them from looking at the game clock and counting a bit and playing around that. There's no way to tell if their high damage characters happen to headshot your tank that's constantly getting healed and build up their ulties that way.

Like the other anon said, tf2 handles über as an "ult" and you can track that very simply by telling your spy to disguise as medic and switching to the medigun.

totally agree with this.
sure some characters are easy. but to play them to their fullest potential, you have to get pretty good with some of them.
especially since this game rewards headshots wich TF2 doesn't.
also seems to have a lot of fun movement tricks and animation cancels.
>>
>>337058909

You weigh risk vs reward and communicate with your team. At the very least you could just assume they all have ults and decide if you could win the fight anyway or need to bait some out. It comes down to execution at that point.

>>337059034

It's an estimate just like how tracking uber advantage is an estimate outside of the spy method
>>
>>337059270
you have to learn how to chain their cooldown abilities together, the movement is very basic for everybody. the thing people seem to ignore in this thread is that most of us aren't saying the game is worse than tf2 just that it's less complex because it has virtually no advanced movement options, it's less taxing for a player to learn a new character because instead of having to learn how to move as a scout or rocket jump as soldier you just have to learn how to chain his cooldown abilities with your teammates and when to ult. your movement between characters remains virtually the same outside of some character being able to fly or climb walls by pressing a button.

>>
>>337059564
the difference between tracking an uber by guessing though is that most people have learned the timing because it's pretty consistent and it's one thing to mentally track. overwatch has you trying to track 6 peoples potentially game changing moves without a definite answer as to how much they charge over a period of time. i'm sure at some point they'll release a hero that can see ult progress and i'm sure as soon as they do most comp teams will pick him up.

You can play off probability yes but not if you want this game to be competitive because then it comes down to luck and not skill. You cannot have so many factors unaccounted for in high level play, imagine it's grand finals and one team wants to push but there's a 10% chance the other team has their ults. They push and it turns out they did have them and they get shit on and lose because of something they had no control over.

>It comes down to execution at that point.
That only works up to a certain point, in high level play you cannot assume the enemy is going to miss.

rocket jumping is not the same as rocket jumping sideways or backwards and exploiting shitty source engine bugs. there is a reason you fly slower when doing it forwards and it is the same reason that half life 2 speedruns are done by launching yourself backwards. basically, since you apparently don't know, source engine prevents players forward momentum on a much stricter bias than it does momentum in any other direction in source games. purely on the fact that valve didn't think people would ever think about trying to go fast in other directions.

the only one you missed is reinhardts charge
either way, it's not just stunning but also just killing the one who ults ASAP often done on characters like pharah,Mccree and genji
Mei ult and Hanzo ult can't 100% cover a point, and also due to overtime being a thing, not touching the objective for a couple of seconds doesn't lose you the game.
also at around higher levels and at the end of the open beta, i rarely ever see good hanzo ults, it's just telegraphed real hard and easy to dodge, like the Dva ult.
and yea let's say they do a zarya ult + Bastion ult combo, if your team doesn't have at least 1 ult up, then you fucked up. people just like waisting their cooldowns on 1 single kill or something.

Basic physics are bugs? Are you fucking retarded? If you jump and shoot a rocket in front of you where do you expect the player to go?

>that half life 2 speedruns are done by launching yourself backwards
Half life 2 is on a much older version of the engine you cannot compare the two. For example bunny hopping in TF2 is nearly impossible compared to HL2 and you cannot increase speed forever just running backwards.

>there is a reason you fly slower when doing it forwards
It's not about speed it's about control you fucking moron. You wouldn't be able to turn corners or dodge in the air otherwise. C-Tapping and wall jumping already gives soldiers more than enough horizontal momentum for nearly every situation.

I'm gonna let you know something anon. I played TF2 the day it went F2P and played for 4 years. I recebtly quit to play CSGO because I knew TF2 was dying.

TF2 takes beyond more skill than CSGO. CSGO is a campy, "stay in one place and advance occasionally" type of game. TF2 on the other hand is constant movement and focus on including aiming into your movement.

3/10 you tried.

>>337062046
i wouldn't really count reinhardts charge because of the starup, he'll be long flung away by roadhog by then. and while mei and hanzos ults can't completely shut down a point they can force the enemy team to either back off the point or go forward into a waiting mei to freeze them. like i said certain ults are game changers but can't be easily countered and that's just not a good thing to me, i mean yea there is skill in deploying it at the right time but i have a problem with something like a mei ult locking off a hallway making it so an entire team has to wait for the thing to end before they can move forward.

It fully reloads your revolver. One of the strongest moves in the game that allows you to drop tanks like butter.

new maps and heroes have been confirmed free.
you can probably buy lootboxes once the game releases, but you also get those by leveling up so it's for those rich oil shiek sons who have money and no patience.
there is a possibility for premium skins/sprays/emotes but all the unlockable stuff right now already looks really good.
hell even Diablo 3 keeps getting free updates and new seasons with new items and areas, and they don't get any money off of that except for the inital purchase.
Overwatch will probably sell a shitton since its also on consoles, so they will pump out content regularly.
>>
>>337057576
The constant comparison between Overwatch and TF2 comes from Overwatch being similar enough to TF2 that they fill the same niche. The characters and their abilities are reminiscent of ASSFAGGOTS, but they lack a lot of lasting impact that ASSFAGGOTS gain from matches being long, protracted battles in a lane and complex interactions between ally and enemy abilities during teamfights. You can switch on the fly so composition isn't as important. On the polar opposite of the spectrum is TF2, where the fewer classes mean they could give each individual class more depth mechanically because they weren't worried about running out of gameplay mechanics to distribute. Teams are larger (excluding 6v6 comp TF2 I guess) and you don't have to worry too much about team comp because the greater team size can compensate for a few too many of a class, unless you have something like 8 snipers.

So it has the super-specialized character roster like a Dota or LoL but in cramped maps sometimes smaller than TF2. Because they're overspecialized, there are near-direct counters but players can switch between them after each death. So the depth that could come from carefully picking your team's roster is instead reduced to picking a good counter to whatever the enemy just switched to counter your team.

I'm not adequately articulating the feeling about this game I have, but to tl;dr it feels like it's caught between the casual class-based arena/arcade shooter and competitive character/comp dependent tactical MOBA and it lacks its own identity when it SHOULD take some compatible elements from both and then carve out a third, unique direction to take the game.

It's fun but I have my doubts about how long it will last.

This.

TF2 was great because of the unofficial servers. Good admins and small, but dedicated, communities really made the game something special to play.

I never liked the idea of matchmaking and I've always seen it as the primary instigator of poor attitudes and lack of community.
>>
>>337068283
No, because most teams have a Lucio that'll boost 'em to the front lines.

Otherwise you have Winston which has his jump pack skill, Tracers with their dash, Mercy with the ability to fly to any person she's healing, and Widowmaker with her grappling hook.

Only ones really fucked are McRee and Zarya.
>>
>>337068672
Practice makes perfect anon. If you really wanted to get good, I would say first learn to pogo. Then maybe practice stringing a rocket jump and pogo together. Then pick a map and learn the rollout for it.

Gullywash has a really easy rollout to learn, same with Badlands and Granary. Process is also fun to learn but tricky to pull off, it can take a lot of practice to get right.
