How can mid game be a slog if that's one of major parts of the game.
Stellaris has so much things going for it, I can't see this game being less than 8 atm. Probably 9 in few months with fixes and mods, and then like a 10 in few years with expansions and even more mods.

>The problem is that alliances are built for war, and the diplomatic conception of war in Stellaris doesn’t work well at all. Essentially, the issue is that the goals you set before a war are too big: things like capturing or freeing an enemy colony or vassalizing an enemy empire. There are no options for something smaller-scale, like shifting a border star system into your sphere of influence in order to get that tundra planet for colonization. It all feels all-or-nothing. But resources are balanced by planet, so you don’t really need massive expansion except for its own sake. I found myself declaring war out of boredom rather than for any strategic benefit – never a good sign in any grand strategy game.

I want to make a note here about the IGN Review.... First and foremost the guy who reviewed this reviews strategy games... He does not give reviews of 4X games and that comes across very well if you read his review. You can tell he got really frustrated with a number of things for all the wrong reasons and even had the courage to state that Paradox/Stellaris has Weak Diplomacy..... It's also funny that moderator's in the chat keep saying he does know what he is talking about because he has reviewed Crusader Kings....... Which is not a 4x game.... So there is that.

Paid reviewers. And I have proof - 100% of Paradox games and expansions have game-breaking crippling bugs upon release. Thus it is impossible for reviewers to rate it high based on merits, let alone play it all the way through.

The people who do this are usually retarded faggots who would usually be considered exiles from shitholes like Gamefaqs and Reddit and now include buttmunches from Tumblr and Neofag that have shat this board up even worse then 2012 now that their forums are starting to die (the former due to potential Yahoo bankruptcy due to incompetent CEO). The mods want this so of course they keep it up and warn/ban anyone who asks them to do their jobs while allowing marketers to roam free as Hiroyuki (and Moot before) gets ad shekels from them. 4chan is fucking dead and fed to the normalfag hordes, only use for this shithole is for shitposting.
Oh boy. If only I had my own brain to decide if I like a game or not and have a 2 hour window to do so.
If you can give a review based on just getting to mid game, then I, a seasoned 4x player, will work out if it's shit or not before 2 hours is up.
But most likely? I'll enjoy it and get to murder furshits.
I wonder what Hearts of Iron IV will get then? My guess is even less.

>>337034353
It does back up the point there are some review accounts around, but from what I can tell its not a great deal, its probably bloated by the fact most of it is codes given to streamers and Youtube "game critics"
Honestly though as I mentioned before giant bomb are generally okay review wise, but it takes a bit of learning to see what each review likes/dislikes that you agree with since its mostly a subjective process, but then again that betrays the usefulness of a review when you need to do hours of research to see if the review is a retard or not.
>>337035190
I just don't understand the point of "professional" reviews for a steam game since user reviews exist, I wasn't trying to contend the point of review accounts existing
You often see reviews of completely random accounts with "this was a review copy" or "got a copy for free" so those accounts definitely exist
>>337034685
Yeah, I meant that shit about peaceful isolationism government that Switzerland starts with.
The problem is to not get sphered and pulled into some ridiculous shit.
>>337035053
Runs pretty well on my shit computer.
The UI is pretty good, but there are just a few small issues. One problem is you can't initiate the diplomacy screen from the Empire screen which is retarded. You have to find the empire on the map, click their icon, and then you can do diplomacy. Seems really strange that this is an issue considering this simple shortcut was in every Paradox game I can remember.
>>337035736
Does that ever come up? The only time I ever used that screen instead of the map in a Paradox game was if it was some African kingdom I never heard before or something
For everyone who I actually interact with, I just use the map
What the fuck is Stellaris?
>>337035945
It's not that big of a deal in early game, but I can see it becoming an issue later on if you're playing a huge map with a ton of different empires.
If I'm trying to do diplomacy, I'd rather just click on the empire from a list rather than try to search around the galaxy for them.
But is the game actually good/bad or not? Would you recommend it to someone who never played a grand strategy game before?
>>337036089
I think I'm having the wrong idea about the size of the game
I thought once the initial colonizing phase ends, you end up with maybe 10 giant empires where you border only 3 or so at most
Does the amount of empires actually look like europe in EU4 or what?
>>337015851
>like CK2
>>337036157
So far, I'm really enjoying it. Hours went by and I had no idea.
It seems easier to learn than other Grand Strategy games, and luckily there's a good tutorial that guides you through most of the mechanics. There are a number of notifications that warn you if something is going wrong or if you forgot to research something. Also this game has symmetrical starts unlike other Paradox games so you don't have to worry about getting fucked by a giant empire while you're trying to learn the game.
>>337021686
A 6.
>>337035402
I find its just more of a personal review that you can get better perspective from over a random review. it often helps you find a game that generally was considered bad due to the reddit rage having such influence over steam.
A point I like to make out to a lot of people also about critical reviews is that the end number generally doesn't mean a great deal without the context of the review itself.
my favourite example being hopw sf4 got higher than ssf4 when super is clearly a better game, without context it sounds dumb, but in context you realise it got lower because its a dlc bundle of the original and doesn't bring much new for a premium price and is docked to reflect that.
Most of the time though, steam reviews work perfectly fine now that they implemented the recent aspect of the reviews rather than just using that 1 upvoted 2000/3000 review
>>337035053
Bad late game in general, starts to lag midgame if you have anything other than a small galaxy, even with server CPUs. Needs an optimization patch.
>>337018450
>comparing Stellaris to Dorf Fort

>>337036618
I see your point, and I should have been more clear.
You should never EVER give too much of a fuck about the actual number of positive reviews
For example, just a few hours ago I bought King Arthur 2 becazse I loved the first one
It has mixed reviews, but most of the negative reviews are from years ago because the game ran like absolute shit, which doesn't matter anymore on a modern machine (or at least I didn't have any problems)
You should always read the actual text of reviews, especially negative ones
>>337014458

Questions about slavery. I have decadent as a race trait. So I know without anybody enslaved I suffer a -10% resource output. Do I need a specific number of slaves or just one? Do I need to enslave one of my pops or something?
I heard slaves are only good for food production.
>>337036965
Ah no I totally agree with that, I was trying to make the point their just useful for having something you might have dismissed as too rashly brought back to your attention by a reviewer you tend to agree with, I was just relating back to the topic.
I guess if you spend a lot of your time sifting through games on a regular basis critical reviews are not particularly useful. It's also partially why the professional review scene for video games is dying out more and more. There are a lot of other just as useful review tools that you don't need to worry about being biased.
Another notable factor I guess is that since most reviews run as soon as they can, they tend to not say the same thing, and often can help you get a different perspective on a game. Example being Banjo kazooie Nuts and bolts most people I ever talked to about it shat on that game because its not like previous titles and gimmicky, yet later down the line a reviewer I agreed with had reviewed that game and after reading through it played it and realised I quite liked the game.

I honestly can't remember I played it on launch, (it ran fine for me) I found the map management stuff to just be generally better and more in theme with what the game was going for, there were a bunch of artifacts and what not but I generally played the game mostly like I play most total war games but with the added bonus of silly magics, battle wise that is.
The thing I remember best was those quest adventure bits were a lot more memorable and better written and the writing in general was a lot better.
Thinking about it though im fairly sure there still is items that generate hp/mp per kill but I might just be confusing the first game into it.
