Hey all, I recently bought Galactic Civilizations 3 and dont like it much because the AI seems to just do everything better and faster. The point of the game seems to just be expand as rapidly as you fucking can if you want to stand a chance.
Is this game different from that? What's it like? It looks incredibly expansive so im just wondering what the core gameplay is. I'm interested in a space game like Gal Civ but just couldn't get into that one much.

The later part of the game is more grand strategy than 4x, which allows smaller civilizations to survive and even prosper. Even if you lose a war you're unlikely to lose more than a few systems or be vassalized, and you can form a federation with other other civilizations to deal with larger threats.

Watched tons of lets plays and streams and the AI seems reasonable. You can see their personality (and what they're most likely to do) underneath their government type in the diplomacy menu. Paradox is pretty good at supporting their games though and the AI tends to get better.

You hype this game like Paradox titles are good on release - they never are. It will take a year, several patches and DLC and probably even mods before it's good. What they've shown so far is an extremely streamlined 4X with very little interesting player choice. The game also has severe performance issues late in the game as the engine does not multithread properly and only pushes AI opponents to different threads/cores.
In terms of gameplay there's the fact that they've not done anything that other games haven't done before, making it only interesting for people who never played other 4X space games.
Can't wait for the all the usual disappointment once the hype and shilling is over.

It is by nature difficult to just give a concise explanation of what a 4X grand strategy game is, as it entails a ton of things going on.
Just saying "it's a space empire management simulator" is ambiguous, and it seemed like you wanted more details. There's so much going on in this game that it would really be impossible to cover everything that you might find relevant to your interest. These are very "cerebral" games by design that require planning and, well, strategy.
Think of it as something like an RTS game, but on a massive scale - up to a 1000 star systems in one map - so instead of an intense focus on just a small handful of battles taking place on a small map, you're letting the AI handle the tactics and just focusing on trying to organize everything on a macro-level.
I realize even this fails to convey much about the game, but I hope that in failing to do so, it actually illustrates what I was trying to say originally, that, it is not an easy thing to do when asked to explain what a game like this is, so it might be better to just watch a rundown video explanation if you have the time.

1. Most DLC is cosmetic that you only buy if your retarded.
2. Expansions come out every couple of months and are like 15$ a piece, and usually offer substantial gameplay changes and launch alongside free updates.
Paradox doesn't sell millions of copies, in order to continue game development they have to charge for DLC otherwise their profits will dry up after they launch the game. If you can't afford 15$ every couple of months then you are poor and should be working instead of playing video games. If everyone pirated then there would be no more video games, luckily not everyone is a dead weight leach on society.

It starts out like a Civ game because you need to explore and colonize a few worlds early on, but once you start to discover other factions and run out of space to colonize, around the mid-late game it becomes more heavily focused on internal politics and diplomacy.
For instance, one major concern you have to deal with as your populations increase in size is diverging opinions (ethics divergence) about your rulership. If your citizens are unhappy, and there is enough support for the separatists they can break off and become a vassal system instead of a core system in your empire. And if you continue to piss them off even then, they may outright declare their independence and rebel against you.
So basically, the mid-to-late game, it becomes a lot like Game of Thrones in space or something, where you're dealing with politics mostly and the 4X elements aren't the focus anymore.
