Depends entirely on you. Some people are quicker or slower learners, some people study more or less than others. As long as you're diligent about it you'll be able to start playing games in a few months at most, though simpler games. Games like Pokemon and Dragon Quest are games you should be able to play in several months to a year. They'll be kind of hard anyway, and you'll need to constantly look up words, but there's no getting around that. It took probably a couple years before I didn't have to look up something every other sentence, but I'm not entirely sure since it's something you don't really notice until one day you go "Hey... I only have to look things up now and then now."
I've been at this for a few years and I'm at a comfortable spot (though I've still got a lot of room for improvement, I'm still quite a way from fluency). I've heard that Kiseki games are hard to play in Japanese, but from the couple hours of Evo that I watched I didn't have many issues. Of course, that's 2 hours of a long game, so take that with a small grain of salt. Other games like Persona I still have to look up words at least a few times scene usually if there's a lot of conversations.
