It's not a very huge deal really with all those new PSUs around but if you run crossfire a new pascal GPU would not use as much watts than a single Radeon in full load.

People will still rush to buy the newest and most expensive GPU even at launch for only a reference card all in the name of dickwaving and benchmarks, it's a niche, but with enough of a demand to where they can justify $600. Everyone thought that Nvidia charging $600-800 for the first batch of 8800's was insane, with fucking $1000 for an 8800 Ultra being like buying a Neo-Geo in the 90's, but people still bought them, and they did little to change the price, up until the 8800 512's showed-up
Based on both brands screaming about how the RAM and bandwidth is insane with the upcoming cards, it's made for the "future-proofing" crowd in mind that are waiting for VR and 4k to be a mainstream thing, although a 980 or Fury should be more than fine for a generation or two of VR, based on benchmarks for current games, with single-card 4k being where these cards will ACTUALLY shine, because as of now, enjoyable 4k is more of an SLI/Crossfire deal
My take on the specs is that if you DON'T plan on going for 4k vidya or multi-monitor setups with psychotic resolutions, and tend to never go past 2560x1440/1600, and have been waiting to upgrade for a while, you should wait until everyone dumps their old cards on eBay during the rush to buy a 1080, since you'll be able to save some money and still get a worthy upgrade

I feel like we're just buying new GPUs to counteract lazy optimization at this point. DOOM runs flawlessly, but it's not always the case for a lot of games, many of which look even worse. I have a feeling if I ended up building a system with the intention of 4K gaming, I'd end up dropping the resolution or graphics settings anyway because all the new hardware did was give lazy developers more wiggle room for bad optimization.
