That would be the ideal. The current materia system is shit and doesn't offer any real choice anyway. Its just another thing you have to grind out to maximize your performance.
Materia is just poorly thought out at almost every level. It's a pain in the ass to acquire, the materia you get is random (and can easily end up as an utterly useless elemental resistance materia), and to even put it on your gear you need the right crafter at the right level, PLUS a catalyst that needs to be farmed. It's just tedious in every imaginable way and should really be rebuilt from scratch.
Like you said, make materia add unique bonuses instead of just being +stat. Remove spiritbonding and let materia come from other sources like desynthesis, and remove the randomization by making it so certain items always turn into specific types of materia. And remove the requirements for actually putting it in gear. Just let people shove it in there.

Second marker is the only time something not for a divebomb was used for a divebomb. To my knowledge, the prey, wild charge, and meteor stream markers have always been used in a similar manner across all fights that utilize it.
Another thing I'd like is for shit like A6S' elemental debuffs to play some form of wind-up animation leading to the debuff wearing so you're not stuck needing to check the duration or have someone call out it's about to trade/explode.

With stuff like that and Sleep becoming useless, 4.0 really needs to either rework or try to utilize a lot of the less/never used systems in the game. Just a few more examples:

Oh and not really a system, but raids being only 4 bosses a tier has gotten really old. The fights are still fine, but it's not a lot of content, especially once you're on farm status. Plus that contributes another problem of there being only 2 choices of gear for any given slot (or no choice when it comes to rings), more bosses would mean they might have to make more than one set of gear for each type of job.

There's no way to make people want to run EX primals once they have their gear (for iLv or glamour) as things are now.

Is it me or does this game feel lonely for an MMO?
I'm now starting to realize that aside from FATEs and dungeons there's very little player interaction and most content can be done solo, and even in dungeons or raids most people are silent and just go through it as fast as possible.

Clemency can basically be spammed so long as you're doing nothing but Riot Blade comboes and using Sheltron on cooldown.
WARs have Equilibrium on a 1m cooldown and their other selfheals are worse than those 400 HP cures.
DRKs have that one nice self heal on a long cooldown that is garbage on anything less than 3 mobs.

The problem with elemental resistances/weaknesses is that players don't really have much control in terms of what kind of damage they do. Damage is balanced around the assumption you're pumping out your full rotation, so any significant modifiers to that can cause an upset. It is just a consequence of designing a game where playstyles are rigid.
e.g. if you made a boss that was resistant to fire, boom, BLMs are now 110% fucking useless on that fight.
