In WWI, most fighting was done by infantry on the ground. Not tanks, not planes. They were still new and unreliable.
As technology improved, every major conflict produced fewer and fewer dead.
Think back to the age of swords and shields. The only way to defeat your enemies was to get right up in their faces. Smashing together armies of bodies in a massive pointy mess of spears and blood. WWI was similar. Attacker had no choice but to build a bridge of corpses to overtake defensive positions.
Nowadays, we can crush armies remotely using unmanned planes armed with potent guided explosives. There's less need to march men to their certain deaths.

Plus, those all took place on the most "tame" theater of the war for the most part. Western Europe was the cleaner part of the war. Even the Russian theater was treated with the utmost respect.

I don't even really have a problem with them making a game of it. I have actually wanted a legit WW1 shooter for a long time because I think it could be really compelling if done right. This trailer, along with slogging through the campaign of BF4 for some reason, very much gives the impression that it will be a total mockery. I thought it wasn't right when they did it in BF4, and that was a fictional conflict. It doesn't even have to necessarily be super realistic imo, just not a re-imagining and glorifying of war. At least in some older games they would present dying as the glorious act instead of killing, and I even thought that was typically in poor taste.

I just think it's a shame that they had the opportunity to make one of the most powerful and emotional shooters out there and they took this approach instead. All they would've had to do was set up a likeable protag then put him through some accurate scenes with the toxic mud causing corpses to rot and smoke, artillery ripping your allies to pieces, your destination being pointless once you get there and there being no way out of it. If they take this approach it's going to be a less flashy modern warfare and it'll disappoint the players because the gun's won't be as fun to use. They had the budget and the manpower to make people interested about the events and make something special, but it's just a new skin for the same old thing.

If you don't know the events, then it's understandable you'd think that. WW1 was on another level, and not in a way that would be remotely interesting or suited for a game. People choking to death as their lungs filled with acid, smoking rotting pits of the corpses of your allies spreading fumes over the area, seeing those a few feet ahead being ripped to shreds a few feet in front of you.. it wasn't even like we had a particular enemy, everyone just tried to defend themselves and did some sick shit along the way. I think the presentation has a lot to do with it. Most war games atleast try to come across as dark and horrible. BF1 looks like blatant exploitation of what is generally considered to be the worst conflict in human history. Maybe USA doesn't care as much but for Europe WW1 is culturally sensitive.
