For me it seems like all horror games immediately lose their magic when you get killed. Penumbra/Amnesia, Outlast, and other games like that prey on fear of the unknown. Once you die, that goes away. Silent Hill on the other hand still scares me to this day, because it brings out our more primal fears. So I guess just go for more psychological horror.

when i have died once, i just go full speedrun and just sprint past the enemies i'm supposed to hide from

I liked silent hill because there were almost no jump scares.
You almost always knew in advance that monsters were near because of the radio noise.
Honestly, the radio noise is a big part of what made SH scary to me.

All of these indie shit horror games tell their entire story through notes and audiologs which makes it difficult to give a shit about what's happening. It also means the bulk of the story has to already have occurred and that the events of the game are basically the third act.
>>

This building inspired the setting in the Dredd movie. Cool as fuck in a disgusting sort of way

Fatal Frame takes places in abandoned run down areas. Silent Hill and Condemned also had these kind of areas

That's pretty retarded. For me, the best horror always has a clear descent into madness. Something like Kill List comes to mind.

There you go, you start out on the bottom floor and work your way up with a group of friends. Your character needs food, water, and sleep. And there's no respawns.

>>
>>336842215
I think it would. I'm imagining this like a vertical Snowpiercer with different gangs occuping different floors and the atmosphere changing radically as you make your way down. Maybe a lot more surreal. Everything has been converted into a living area, you walk through people's shit, pass next to people taking a bath right in the middle of a hallways, climb down abandoned elevator shafts, people get inexplicably scared or outright hostile if they learn you're trying to go down, some force or organization is trying to keep you upstairs. The few times you see outside everything is dark and stormy and you can just barely see other towers just like yours stretching upwards and downwards as far as the eye can see.

The problem with horror games is making them comfortable enough for people to actually play. Most people literally can't even play a FNaF game because it's too stressful. People are averse to being genuinely scared, which is what's holding the genre back.

Instead of relying on jump scares, a good horror game should make you want to turn your head away from the screen. You should be legitimately scared at losing or dying. Punishing death with a gruesome death animation does this the best.

You owe it to yourself to play them all.

It's the only series with no bad entries.

The original 3 on PS2 are classics. 4 and the remake of 2 are some of the best games on Wii. 5 was amazing. Spirit Camera was great as a tech demo, and anyone with a spare $5 needs to at least try it out (would have made an awful full price game though.)

The manga, the book and the movie are all very, very good too. I'd put the film up there as the best video game movie. But i'm the kind of person that loved the Forbidden Siren movie so what the fuck do I know.

>the movie are all very, very good too. I'd put the film up there as the best video game movie.

I love the game series but the movie is fucking awful.

It's a Fatal Frame movie in name only. The camera, the one consistent thing in the series, barely even gets a nod in the film. It's just a dull film about about a curse of lesbianism amongst high school girls. It's as if the took the script to an unrelated bad porn film, cut out all the porn and just slapped the Fatal Frame name on it. It's not interesting, it's not scary, it's not well made, it's just plain shit.

How about when you die you get transported to a different segment of the game.
IE there are four divisions of the game, if you go through the game without dieing, you stay and can beat the game in Route A. If you die once you start Route B, all the way to Route D. If you die in Route D the game crashes and never works again
>>

If you are going to play any Siren game then play the remake on the PS3, stay away from the PS2 games.

Reminded me of this for some reason that I saw earlier during the WWI threads. I'd like to see a WWI horror game where your protag slowly goes insane over the course of the war and begins to see enemies and allies alike as increasingly horribly monsters.

Pathologic

The one of rare cases of survival horror done right.
You are in a city that is slowly going to hell due to disease and inner strife and you try to save people you care about.
Happens in more or less real time so you have to decide between trying to scrounge up resources or try to finish side quests that might improve your chances.
And meanwhile two other heroes are going through their story making their choices fucking shit up for you.

Also made by russians in early 00s so filled with depression and hopelessness

>What's the difference between the PS2 and the wii version of 2?

Everything. Complete ground up remake with new graphics, camera, controls, music, voice acting, new endings, costumes, gameplay mechanics.

>Is the wii version of 2 even translated?
Yes, good luck finding a physical copy though because it was extremely limited print.

>Are the levels of the other games as comfy as 5's?
2 will scratch the same itch since it's set in a haunted mountain village. I personally preferred 3's Manor of Sleep, myself. Some people place Project Zero 2 as the "silent hill 2" of the series.

This is High-Rise except in reverse. The book I mean, no idea what the movie did with it.

>power is out everywhere
>packs of feral dogs roam the corridors
>the rich on the top floors have barricaded themselves in and live like renaissance royalty
>mobs of poorer folk in the lower levels clearing out rooms and setting up base camps
>people constantly trying to get higher and higher for unexplainable primal reasons
>cannibalistic "tribes" of women

I dunno if it's really horror so much as survival but it's a cool concept. You'd need either brilliant AI or to code a shitton of NPC behaviours and personalities. It'd be a game that's made or broken on the quality of the other people in the world/building/tower.

>Some people place Project Zero 2 as the "silent hill 2" of the series.

I've never agreed with this. I suspect the only reason people put Project Zero 2 at the top of their list is because it has the "saddest" endings of all the games and for some reason I don't understand there's a lot people who think "sad end = better writing".

I don't really think there is a Fatal Frame that shines above the rest, the series has been amazingly consistent.

Nah, no raptors, most of the threat was really just the isolation and paranoia that troops developed that gets exacerbated from an unknown threat. I think if a game has that as its setting, it could end up really interesting with a lot of heavy atmosphere.

There are some things he didn't mention, like the new voice acting being way worse than the original voice acting, the new gameplay mechanics making the game significantly easier than the original release and the camera controls being not very good.

Both versions have issues, there is no "definitive" version. Just play whatever you can get your hands on.

>The camera, the one consistent thing in the series, barely even gets a nod in the film.

Now hold up a minute playa. Let ya boy holla at ya. I know what yer thinkin': "how can fatal frame be fatal frame wit' no camera obscura?"

Well shit son, I thought that too. But then I gots me ta thinkin', and I had one of them there epiphanies.

See, we all love that fuckin' camera. It's unique an' shit. Well, 'cept when DreadOut ripped it the fuck off. But that ol' picture takin' machine? It ain't done dick in the whole fuckin' series.

Fatal Frame 1? Was a fuckin' mirror and some bitch into some crazy ass bondage that saved the motherfuckin' day.

Fatal Frame 2? Didn't nothin' save that day except for the warm hands of a twin sister's hands around her bitch twins throat. She dun' strangled dat hoe.

Fatal Frame 3? Bitch woke up after a good nights sleep after findin' that tattoed slut some fresh Asian dick to ride on a boat with.

Fatal Frame 5? That shit ended with a HUG. Like seriously. "I forgive you for being such an evil bitch, now gimmie dem sins."

Spirit Camera? Your camera didn't do shit. The day was saved after introducin' a bitch to her imagery self she created out of boredom, a lack of dick, and the imminent arrival of a sewing needle and an old bitch that was down with the lord.

Even in gameplay. You think you're hot shit excorsisin' on dem ghosts. But then later on in the level they always come back and be all SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKA, BET WE SPOOKED YOU GOOD HUH?

Camera has one fuckin' job: Kill ghosts. 5 games and a few spin offs later and it ain't done that shit once. No wonder the film reduced it to a plot device and brought in them sweet, sweet yellow muff divers, knowhataymsayan?

>Even in gameplay. You think you're hot shit excorsisin' on dem ghosts. But then later on in the level they always come back and be all SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKA, BET WE SPOOKED YOU GOOD HUH?

It kind of went away in the later games but originally the camera is exorcising ghosts, it's just the way the game was developed you had to reach certain points in the story before you were allowed to exorcise certain ghosts. After you reach that point and kill that ghost though, it was never coming back.

The camera is iconic to the series, it's the only consistency across all the games and it was barely in the film and was of no consequence. Besides, even if I ignore that it doesn't change the fact that the movie is shit.

if you are like me, the game will require a lot of experimentation. that, i think, is just ice-pick lodge's style, and i really like it that way. it requires you to really get into the mindset of your character and really look at the world and the people in it. and it's very rewarding to do so.
i played the game a lot without getting very far, restarting from the first day a bunch of times, then i finally "got it" and could continue further into the game. it's funny because after that point of "getting it", the game just felt much more natural to play. it became a comfier overall experience, though at the same time still very tense, strange and disturbing.

This is the horror game I'd like to play, but developers are too stupid to create. Just establish a spooky, claustrophobic environment (in this case an abandoned building complex) and fill it with all sorts of insane psychological horror, from ghosts, through body horror, to phobias-based crap - but NEVER devolving into screamers territory or Penumbra-style hide and seek monster gimmicks. Just a content tourist game of horror.

Now there's a fucking walking simulator I'd play.

Even now there is hope for man:

>Limited Run Games, the genius publishers who bring the American market new limited runs of both indie games and high demand games that did not see an American release have hinted that they are trying to work out a deal with Nintendo to bring Fatal Frame V: Maiden of Blackwater to American players in physical format. While the team usually handles PlayStation titles, they are happy to work with other platforms – just don’t expect the games to be changed for physical distribution. They’ve clarified that this would be a distribution deal for a physical version of the available digital game for Wii-U, and that they are aiming for 10,000 copies. Should this deal go through, pre-orders are bound to sell quickly through their website.

Why do a lot of people hate jump scares?

I don't find any horror setting or atmosphere scary the only thing scaring me is the anticipation to another jump scare.

Case and point. You should start playing real horror games.
>>
>>336851771
I don't think it's the jump scare itself, but the overuse or overly long set ups.

If you know a jump scare is going to come, what with shadows moving around or that music sting, it's not going to scare you. Startle you, sure, but not scare.

However, I'd say a good horror game would have a nice balance between them. Especially if they continually set up really dump looking jump scares that don't do anything only to throw something actually threatening at you with no warning or cue.

I'd also say you can have a horror game without a jump scare but would need good atmosphere to make the player worried and nervous about what's around every corner.
>>
>>336851771

Jump scares are bad because they're "cheap" horror.

99% of the time you flash a scary image and a loud sound, people are going to react. It's isnt even real horror, just surprise.

Real horror is basically what you meant by "the anticipation to another jump scare"

Personally, I can play though jump scare games without hassle. Games with long segments of darkness and silence, combined with tense atmosphere makes a good horror game IMHO.

Then again, maybe some people just prefer fright to dread.

I want a horror game about slowly losing your sanity.

Like the first part of the game is you finding out you have a brain tumor.

Then slowly the game starts creeping up the hallucinations. At the start it's just cellphones going off or cars honking.

But then you hallucinate things like your wife cheating behind your back and your daughter shit talking you.

And the game never really tells you what's real and hallucination. You get more paranoid about what's real or not.

Could be a nice multiplayer horror game too, where you and your hazmat suit bros perform experiments and deal with escape attempts.

Open world horror game with an assortment of abandoned buildings/locations to explore. You're tasked with investigating paranormal activity in a quest like fashion at said locations.

Game will have co-op so you can group up online with 3 other players while you explore random locations to try and find evidence of paranormal activity..

Like one of those Ghost Hunter TV shows only a video game basically.

Explain how it isn't a walking simulator then. You walk around. You interact with environmental cues. Puzzles pretty much don't exist. The only gameplay is walking around and interacting with stuff that pops up.

OH RIGHT you have to sneak up on evil ghosts like once or twice in every level. Top tier gameplay there.

Wouldn't it work better if you started from the bottom?(inb4 drake)
Because I imagine that the bottom floors would be the most populated. So there's a certain level of comfort in having other people around. And then as you go higher, the areas become less and less populated. Leaving vacancy for spookier and spookier environments.
The motive doesn't have to be complicated. Just that for whatever reason, you need to go to the top of the tower. Maybe you're looking for someone.

Anyway, you get to the top of the tower midway through the game. And unleash whatever spooks were hiding up there. Now you need to make it back down while surviving all the supernatural madness. When you start nearing the bottom floors, you see the people you met before, except now things have changed. The supernatural has twisted everything around. And then it climaxes at the bottom, when you make a daring escape from some super dangerous spook.

Depends how it's implemented. If the player has to learn the language themselves, then that tends to be something that puts me off.

If it's something that's shown as time goes on, like the play character is able to interpret certain words as english until near the end where he can understand most of what they're saying, then that's something I'm fine with. Especially if the words the play character 'learns' can throw events into a different light, or perhaps even the wrong light entirely depending on their interpretation of their actions.
>>
>>336851775
>It's in the Chappie movie right?
Yes
>>
>>336857646
I prefer the idea of starting at the top, with the implication that you don't know what's at the bottom, never did. It would contribute to the sensation of claustrophobia: you're trapped and the only way out is down, or killing yourself by jumping off. Also gives a clearer motivation: you want to leave this fucking tower. If you start at the bottom, you could backtrack at any time, you're just throwing yourself in the belly of the beast.
>>
>>336857913
Oh, so your character has amnesia? That old plot device?

If we're going with cliched plot devices, then why not just make your wife/husband/child missing inside the tower. That's more than enough motivation to scale the thing.

Maybe you were born there, like that movie about a train circling the globe carrying the last remnants of the human race. Maybe it's just all really vague, like no one knows why they're in that tower or how long they've been there but they never question it either, as far as they know they've always been in that tower and that seems normal to them. There are many ways this idea could happen without relying on "le amnesia meme"

This is the inherent issue with horror games - sometimes they're honestly better if they play worse. Tank controls are a great example here. Horror is about limitation, and frustration. You don't play a horror game for its smooth controls, and challenging but rewarding combat, or anything from any other genre. It's a genre entirely built on negative emotional response. Great horror games relish in this. That doesn't mean they have to play bad or be bad games or anything, but harsh limitations like that are often a key element in what makes a good horror game because what makes good horror is not what makes a good shooter, or strategy game, or adventure game, etc. It's a very unique genre in that regard.

What if the building was far underground, like in an upside down city in a colossal cavern long after man had to retreat from the surface due to either ecological disaster, nuclear war, or some other cataclysm that has long since passed into fable. The upper layers are relatively alright but the further you descend, the crazier shit becomes. Rumors of vast vaults of hidden treasures, secret old weapons that could give one of the gangs an edge in the various petty conflicts, maybe security breaches from unknown sources coming up and you've got to stop them. Any hook to drive you further down is a plus.

The bottom would be so very far down no one even remembers what's down there anymore, no one communicates between top and bottom, and so much time has passed that entire cultures have evolved independent of each other across the colossal vertical span.
>>
>>336860994
I agree with this notion.

I stepped in trying to play a horror game. I left with a good sci-fi story.
>>
I had this idea for a game once, a long time ago, it would be a tank controls, fixes camera angle game about a protagonist surviving in a world after a large series volcano eruptions caused civilization to dwindle, remaining human beings are far and few between, it's been so long since the initial blanket of ash hit the ground the protagonist can barely remember the past. It takes place long enough after the disaster that entire towns are covered in thick blankets of ash and mysterious dark creatures have started to emerge from the ash, they will be the standard vicious horror enemies a la silent hill but the main mechanic of the game in my head is that in order to find sparse ammo and other important items and weapons crucial to your survival you have to find houses and buildings buried under the ash and loot them by going down into them from the ceiling and working your way down to actual ground level while trapped on all sides inside a house by feet and feet of solidified ash.

It would be very claustrophobic and prey on the psychological part a lot, I was hoping to work in a story shift where the monsters are coming from under the ash and just a few feet below the top part we walk around on its a pitch black dark hell hole full of monsters that takes up most of the town but isn't seen since we only go under the ash to loot burried houses then leave until the third act where the protagonist is trapped in the dark streets under the "over world"

The story so far is the only thing you remember is your family and one name, the name of your daughter, not much else has stayed true in your mind over the years other than glimpses and flashbacks, when you get to the end you find out you were actually single handedly responsible for the ruination of your family (and possibly several others) due to your abusive tendencies and rampant alcoholism and the name of your daughter, the only thing keeping you going through the hole game was a miss-memory

Just a general horror game idea I had.

It's like the general idea of Condemned set in a small town where nearly everyone has recently died/vanished. You play through the whole game in a hazmat suit.

It's like a cross between (movies) The Andromeda Strain and Phantoms in terms of setting and weird fuckery with Condemed sort of going about the game I dunno.

Don't live there but am dutchfag with family over there and visited a couple of times.

Contrary to popular believe it's still pretty segregated. You have a lot of gated communities with rich whites in them. These places are just like any first world peaceful city. Yes you will need a gun for the occasional robber. But the same can be said about new york city.

Other places like Johannesburg are actually just as bad as that story tells you. Lawless places that look just like those liveleak Brazil killing videos. It's not a good country to live in overall.

Basically If the people are speaking afrikaans or UK english then you are in a relatively good place. If they speak swahili or any other native language then just run as fast as you can before you yourself will become a liveleak video.

Rape is a daily occurrence in some places.

Basically the nation has places that could be first world white nations if you look at the demographics and quality of life. Other parts of the nation are Somalia lawlessness level of shit. Driving and seeing bodies lying next to the road when you ride to work. And seeing the body still there when you return home is not rare.

I had an idea for a horror game a while ago that when you select a difficulty, instead of choosing easy, normal, hard etc, it would have a list of phobias to choose from that would alter the game slightly to make it scarier for someone with that particular phobia. Like arachnophobia would make spider enemies more common and threatening, or a fear of heights would have the game set somewhere really high up.

I dunno, it's probably dumb but I thought it was cool.

IT tech guy/student teacher in my college is from Johannesburg and tells us about his wacky adventures growing up in SA, such as this one time his dad and neighbor had to shoot a dindu trying to break into his house at night by trying to go down the chimney.

The nig was taken into custody by cops and medics and apparently had a knife on him and an accomplice who drove off the moment he heard gunfire.

It always gets horribly misrepresented because the only people willing to talk about 4chan on a large scale are the sites covering scandals, so we get stuff like Fox New and exploding vans.

For once I'd like to see someone cover 4chan without an angle, if only to say that for once someone did it right.

So do you guys think the leaps in VR tech will bring about a new era of horror games? The thing thats made it increasingly difficult to make real good horror games is the lack of immersion, and being able to put the player in this nightmare you're presenting, but with the VR tech we have now, it's now very possible to plunk a person down into a horror setting and make them feel all the more invested in the shit they are experiencing.

See the atmosphere is spooky, but then you realize the only threats in places like this are
>Security
>Squatters
>Maaaybe animals
Other than that, unless you're spooked by the dark easily, theres nothing to be really scared of in such a place.
>>
>>336872942
that's crazy looking.
last summer there was a forest fire somewhere near where i live. i wasn't that close of course. but some smoke floated through and it created a bit of a surreal atmosphere outside. the smoke made it look sort of foggy and it turned the sunlight more orange too. the entire day felt like the sun was about to set because of it.

>>336873294
i think VR will spark some very interesting things in horror. though i think it will also perpetuate some less interesting things.
but even right now horror game design is absolutely not reaching even close to its potential. in fact, i'd consider the extra immersion provided by VR to be very insubstantial compared to actually good horror design. it's just so, so rarely achieved, or even attempted in a serious and thoughtful way.

But thats wrong, it's true gore is an aspect of body horror, and the most well known, but thats only because it's easy to do. Body horror is anything that involves just...wrongess with a persons body, things that will make you feel increasingly uncomfortable, like those images of lotus holes in a person's skin, thats body horror.
>>
>>336836236
I spent a week in Johannesburg. It's a shithole and was scary at first, but in the end it's not much different than a part of LA I lived in for a year. It's pretty easy to see the type of people you should avoid, and don't put yourself in situations for you to get unlucky.

Horror is mostly scary when you can immerse yourself in the character. This is harder to do in a fantasy setting. A fantasy setting also doesn't have much to offer in terms of horror anyway. Most horror relies on ghosts and monsters and dark places regardless of the setting.
