The fact that the protagonist is black seems like a real non-issue. One could argue that Harlem Hellfighters are featured simply because it's something new and hasn't been done before. It's not like they started inserting black people in D-Day.
Take pick related. He was originally a white guy in the drawing board. They decided to change it to black guy, because it was new. No social justice agenda. And people accepted this when the game came out because such was the political climate (which is to say, there wasn't one).
I remember someone saying he didn't like the black guy protagonist because it's another America-centric game in a very European setting. That seems to have more validity. But still, we wouldn't have this sort of response if it was a white American instead.

I'll just repost what I put in every one of these threads. The biggest difference between the two is the source material. Literally the first thing we knew about Nioh, before ANYTHING else, was that it was going to be based on a westerner samurai - it has validity because it's been confirmed by the creators. EA has not been transparent about their selection of protagonist at all, and stated in interviews that they wanted a diverse game and audience. So it's based on literally nothing but diversity quotas. It screams shallow and opportunistic, and most people are disgusted at EA's blatant attempts to pander to their "audience" than at the actual character being portrayed. It feels forced.
