Rush teleport. Always rush teleport.
If you're playing vanilla, don't be afraid to run around during the countdown. Your focus should be on staying alive rather than killing things, although you should get damage in on the boss whenever you can. As the countdown nears the end, that's when you start focusing more on killing.
Zero item runs are also absolutely possible in vanilla once you get into the mindset of the character you're playing.

It's really easy to see, at least several of, the playable characters as part of a mercenary group. From the item descriptions and apparently the name of the ship, they might be raiding the planet for artifacts.
Providence is then protecting the planet and enacting vengeance for everyone you killed.
I can see Providence as in the right, but from the logs you collect which are presumably by the Commando, you aren't particularly in the wrong.

Read the logs nigga, both item and enemy. Odds are your crew was exploiting the planet for it's resources for quite some time, at least judging by the fact that you already have a teleporter from the planet on your ship.
Providence's log also suggests the Commando regrets what he's done, and feels like he's fucking up something horribly.

It has a sender, it has someone to receive it, it has a date to be received.
Basically, you are a postman. You deliver letters.
Now, this asshole just appears and sticks his sword in your cargo hold, resulting in many explosions and the surviving crew being forced in an escape capsule.
(The camera zooms in on an escape capsule, cutscene ends. You get to choose one character. The survivor. Eveyone else on the capsule is kill)

They go in a straight line towards you, they always speed up at the same distance. Try to lure them into your line of fire.
They're loud and the shot is at your feet, so standing a level above makes it useless. Try not to be on the same level as them.

Glass is the artifact that makes you have only 10% hp of your original character BUT deal 500% more damage.
Essentially, this makes you a glass cannon. You hit like a truck, killing anything in matter of few shots, but go down in one or two hits.

It really makes game easier to play. WIthout it, enemies take way too long to kill.
For example, mercenary can kill 2-3 lemurians with one Eviscerate easily. And dies from 1 lemurian bite.
WIthout it? One eviscerate won't kill a single lemurian, but you can suffer way more hits.
I just can't play without it anymore.

You turn artifacts on at the character select menu after unlocking them.

Sure, that's the only way, by the way.
Picture related, the one with arrow is glass.
This is where you choose character, pick difficulty and your artifacts.
But to make it available, you first have to find the artifact in-game. Then, after you die, you may activate them in character selection menu.
You can find a guide on how to find every artifact on wiki. It will take you less than 2 minutes of googling to find all you need.

Quite so.
You see, later in game health stops being a problem. You gain it through several artifacts. See, Infusion increases your HP by 1 for every killed enemy up to a maximum of 9999, with guardian heart adding a 100 HP shield per heart. So, later in game, HP is not concern. Damage on the other hand... Well, I find it much easier to rack up on HP than to get more damage.
To put it straight, you will eventually get way more HP than those puny 10% by artifacts, and don't forget about regeneration, but 500% damage bonus can't be found in any chest.
