I remember we were having a lot of problems some time ago when trying to make it work with a game on /emugen/. Personally I couldn't even get it to display moonspeak properly. Ultimately MAME seemed more reliable but still primitive.
I see the guy is still working on it, so there's hope I guess.
MAME should also be the current best emulator for x68k, but I've never tried the alternatives so I can't speak personally.

I'm not an expert at all, but just looking at the stats I see that the top of the line 1986 PC98 had an 8 MHz CPU and did 640x400 with 16 simultaneous colours, while in the '90s they were running a 386 and 256 colours. Both of these blow the most common gaming machines of the time, NES and SNES, out of the water.
The X68k was somewhere on the same line, while the FMTowns was even more powerful, so I don't see how you can say that.
Of course, they were probably ridiculously expensive, but that's another story.

When they realized that people only watched anime for the girls. Then they focused exclusively on girls, but the art and animation budget was too high still, so they made concessions when needed. They realized you could have stick figures, it would still sell but the profit margin was exponentially greater. Then they turned anime into a marketing vehicle, to advertise the characters and their respective merchandising, not unlike how 80s cartoons were glorified toy commercials.

I like the 90's style of anime but I'm not going to pretend it's better than what exists now. The constant deformation of characters for the sake of exaggerated emotions got old really fast.

Kanji is only shit because it's so difficult, but it is necessary to some degree. Japanese consists of too many words that are spelt the same, and yet mean different things. It's harder when this comes up in pure text, as the context may then be unclear. It works in video games (like Mother 2 for example) to just use hiragana and katakana with spacing, but that's because you have a very clear visualization of your surroundings, so things make sense. It's a bit trickier if it's in a book, unless we're speaking of stuff aimed for 3~5 year old kids, which typically will come with pictures either way.

No, in all seriousness, I get it. Big part of that was that it was accessible- I mean it was actually in English as opposed to being a patch, which weren't exactly coming out of the walls in the 90s. Home of the Underdogs was awesome... Anyway, on top of it all, the appeal for me was that it didn't look or feel like your typical hentai game (visual novels). It had gameplay, and the bulk of that gameplay was not only fun but it didn't look like a "porn game" and thus could slide past my parents' notice.

1. Most animations with this level of shading were high budget movies, and not serialized TV shows.
2. And yet most of these animations, movies or otherwise had very little actual animation to them. Especially if we're actually talking about the serialized TV format.
We're talking literal slide-shows. Just look at this action scene from Lodoss War for instance, which is one of the examples cited and praised in that little chart of yours. Sure, the shading may indeed be impressive, but it's kind of a joke as far as actual animation is concerned.
This was the case with most old anime sticking to and insisting on this manner of shading and detailing in general. And no wonder, it just hasn't been plausible to keep such levels of detail up and animate it to any notable extent at the same time, without tons of time and man-hours on your hands not to mention the money to fund it.
The truth of the matter is that the animation industry more and more left these trends behind in favour of styles much more suitable for actual animation. Joke at the simplistic styles of K-ON or whatever however much you want, but the pictures do indeed move. A lot. Impressively and impactfully too. And then you have other studios like Madhouse and Ufotable or whatever who have attempted to lean more towards these old trends even in modern times. Have they kept the level of shading and detailing up at all times? Perhaps not, but unlike in the past the pictures move to staggering extents compared to what you'd get in the past outside of the really high budgeted feature films of the time.

That's my opinion though. There are a lot less vibrations to the sounds in general which makes a lot of the more creepy scenes slightly less creepy, and some of the more grandeur scenes slightly less grandeur. As far as I am concerned.
I will concede on how the 44hz files are probably a little less straining and a little more pleasant to the ears though. But unless you have sensitive ears I wouldn't bother.
That said. The very basic guideline on how to complete the game without a walkthrough, and how to not miss any content or easter eggs that the walktrhoughs may not even account for.
Click on everything, and I mean everything. And click on everything until the text starts to repeat itself. Click it an extra time or two if you feel like it as well since why not. Do it in a clockwise motion or something easy to keep track off.
And when you've exhausted all the text from everything you clicked on, you start over from the beginning and start to re-click on everything you've already clicked on.
Only this time things may very well have changed since you've gone through the other stuff you clicked on, leaving you triggering new text and or scenes altogether.
It's how these games were meant to be played anyway. The text is generally speaking very amusing anyway so that's half the fun. By the end of it you'll wish you managed to click on everything just so that you didn't miss any of the text.

What happened is that people abandoned classical dithering. Part of the reason is that dithering by hand is fucking HARD, and the other half is that they had more colours to work with. There's an entire generational art style that's been lost due to technological improvements and we've seen very little attempts to return or revitalize it.
