the deep = the abyss = the dark, but 'the deep' is also a reference to the ocean which is also a reference to the abyss which is also a reference to how the nord's thought the world would end (in flooding). So the deep has both a figurative and literal meaning which FROM likes to hint at. In blood borne it's implied to be actual water, in souls land it's implied to be crazy monster mutations and eternal darkness.
