Go look up zeppelins in WWI. They were a source of fear. They weren't physically effective but they were psychologocially effective. There was real fear among soldiers of one dropping hellfire on your head in the night.
Also keep in mind that the other bombing options in WWI were either a plane with a single bomb (MAYBE two) mounted to it or a plane with the pilot/co-pilot dropping live grenades at the trenches below.

It'd be a horrible experience trying to fire a Lewis on the move. The one they used for marching fire was a modified French Chautat, which is both lighter then the Lewis and also has somewhere to put your hand that isn't the barrel cooling jacket. The Lewis is also longer, with a lot more mass out front, which makes a huge difference. The rifles from that day are only about nine pounds, which doesn't sound like a lot, and is only around two pounds more then a modern M4, but they feel so much more heavy and cumbersome because of the outrageous length and weight distribution.
