>The GTX 1080 will be available for $599 on May 27, and you can also snag a special NVIDIA-designed "founders edition" for $699 (which looks like it includes a stylish new cooler). Almost as an afterthought, NVIDIA also revealed that the GTX 1070 is coming on June 10 for $379 (the founders edition will run you $449).

Is your wallet and neet bux ready, /v/?

I wish it was, but it's going to be like $1100 after tax in Canada and there's no way I'm affording that with NEETbux

But I just bought a 960.

Wait for Polaris to drop before you buy this GPU. If AMD's offerings are equivalent or better, Nvidia will drop price by at least 25-30 dollars.
>>
Just got built a comp with a 970, but if the 1080 delivers I will totally snag one.
>>
>>336759934
Not only that but a founders edition is a slight red flag.
>>
>>336759934
While I agree waiting for reviews and/or alternative options all signs so far have pointed to polaris being low and mid tier GPUs until vega releases in late 2016/early 2017. So the 1080 might be your only choice for the high end. The 1070 might face stiff competition though and Nvidia doesn't have anything below $380 yet.
>>
I don't think I need to upgrade for a while. I can play pretty much anything I want at max settings without frame drops.

7970 was a top notch card, though.

Bought one at launch and it was still running everything just fine up to a couple months ago when I upgraded to a 390x because I had some money lying around. I was still able to get 50-60 fps in Witcher 3 at 1080p with Gimpworks off and most things on medium/high just fine. 4 year old card running things much, much better than consoles at a higher visual fidelity as well, not sure what more I could want from it. I didn't have any issues with it during its lifetime either aside from some stuttering in a couple of games, typically Bethesda trash and shoddy ports but that was pretty much gone by the time I got rid of it.

The open vs closed nvidia driver is probably responsible for a fair bit of that hate. Meanwhile the hating games thing is a small minority who want /g/ to be a coding forum and a larger minority who hate gpu flame wars.

>>336763637
It's not really that /g/ thinks Nvidia purposefully makes older cards worse, this has been tested and is generally not true. What actually happens is older cards get less improvements from driver updates leading to less gains relative to AMD. Whether this is because of something to do with GCN or just having more room for improvement in their drivers isn't really known though.

1440p is silly because if you can't get 1440p/60fps, upscaling from 1080p won't look as good. You'll have to upscale from 720p. 4k/60 is hella difficult, but at least 1080p upscaling doesn't look bad. Still, 4k monitors are too expensive for most.

The problem is the PS4 is equivalent to a 750Ti, a 2.5 year old $100 card. The PS4 NEO is probably equivalent to an R9 380x, a year old $200 card. The 1080 is better than the 980Ti, the best gaming GPU available atm, and the 1070 will probably be around 980/R9 390x performance.

Basically the difference is night and day, the PS4 NEO is an "upgrade" that's already out of date.

Yes, Nvidia usually has better performance on Day 1, while AMD gets better performance over time. If you want to be on the bleeding edge with lots of features and support go Nvidia. If you just want performance/dollar go AMD.

I don't work for pixar pham, there is literally no point in buying this for video games. I do need a new graphics card at some point though, $380 is a little steep for me though.
>>
>>336765096
Ehh it's sort of a case by case basis. When Nvidia is a partner they generally use Nvidia technologies which means they've interacted with the dev team and in these cases Nvidia often has a day 1 driver out yes. But what I'm referring to is that older GPUs, like say the 780ti, see less improvements in new games after driver updates compared to it's then competitor the 290x. The tinfoil response is that Nvidia is actively not improving them in order to make them feel outdated faster. While there's no way to know for sure it's probably more likely that GCN scales back better.

One thing I left out though that /g/ also dislikes is Nvidia's love for proprietary things. Recently they've been more committed to open sourcing stuff (like vrworks) but they still partake in some things like g-sync which is basically trying to lock you into their brand if you want an adaptive sync monitor.

>>336765643
Nobody cares about experimental AMD or Nvidia features that tank your performance for a minor increase in detail. The real advantage of upgrading GPU's is higher resolution or >60 FPS. Expect 1440p and 4k to become more popular, also VR performance is greatly increased this gen.

I really am not sure what to do, I have sli 780s that I got three fucking years ago (non ti version), they still run pretty great, 4k in quite a few games and runs most maxxed in 1440p.

Was hoping a 1080 would be a big upgrade (not interested in vr), but I'm not actually sure it would be? Anyone?

>>

>Polaris is shit

Billions of dollars spent on R&D and they came up with a 20% performance improvement over last year's shit
>>
>>336766010
Depends on the game and mods etc.

Titan X performs battlefield 4 maxed out at 4k around 60 fps. Nvidia says pascal is twice that of a Titan X.

Anyone saying otherwise is burned because they spent tons of money on 980ti's or AMD fans.

Polaris might be really good we have yet to see but if what Nvidia says is true it'll be the best bang for your buck. though expect a bit or a lot of PR polish on some of the shit they said still to be safe.

Emulators are mostly CPU-bound, a 1070 would probably be overkill for last gen consoles. Invest in an i7-6700k or Haswell-E/Broadwell-E if you're looking to blow some money..
>>
This is the first time I've considered running two cards in SLI. I currently have a single GTX 780 and it's done me pretty well, but modern games are starting to hit the 40's at 1440p

How is SLI these days? Still tons of microstutter issues?
>>
>>336766546
The end of moores law is hitting everyone of us.

GPU speed will slow down from this onwards like the speed of CPU has slown down to a grinding halt.

We won't see any big performance gains until we have graphene processors which will give us HUGE gains. (like 1000x processing power increase at once so prepare your anus for that within 20 years time)
>>
>>336766521
>The ps3 emulator is coming along nicely
kek, it can't even run disgaea 3 at 2fps without tons of graphical errors.
>>
>>336765814
I've never put much thought toward open sourced vs. proprietary for myself. I can see why a tech oriented board such as /g/ would want more ability to look at and work with the drivers and software they're using though.

>>

Yeah I know it's not actually the end of moores law just the end of the silicon era.

Like switching from vacuum tubes to transistors to the integrated circuit we now need to switch to graphene circuits

We are on the end of the s curve of the A technology (silicon) B is the upcoming graphene circuitry. So yes Moores law will actually continue but not with silicon.
>>
>>336767253
>might be decades
Then Moores law is kill
>>
Probably not needed unless you want to run a 1440P or 4k setup. Fucking consoles holding gaming back. You cannot have 5-7 years between console upgrades.

There was a few seconds of game play in the BF 1 video at around 0:28. We could have nice games like that but there is no fucking way these already outdated consoles can run that so it will be nothing like what you see in the videos.
>>
When will they release the new Quadro card?
>>
>>336767398
No moores law is not kill if it stops for a couple of decades. If the new technology has a 1000x increase in performance it actually fits on the exponential curve as if the trend had always continued. The difference is that we won't really have any real improvements in those 2 decades so that will suck. But the graphene circuitry huge powerboost will still keep it on the moores law track.

Look at pic related. there is never a real double every 2 years. The curve is still exponential because if 1 processor is not double but lets say 150% then the next processor will be 300% to make up for it making the growth exponential and thus following moores law.

If we have no data points for 20 years but after 20 years we have a 1000-5000x more powerful processor than the line you'd draw would still be exponential and thus follow moores law. It technically still doubled every 2 years for all intents and purposes but just "didn't have a release".

TL;DR the data points are variable but the trend is always exponential double every 2 years. If the graphene processor comes out in 20 years with a power increase of 1000-5000x then it will mean moores law never ended.

I had an 8800gts 320mb that I bought at lauch which was RMA'd years later (two years ago) into a 8800GTX. It played newer games ok at low to medium for most settings and still looked fine at 1680x1050. It's was 20-25 fps gaming, but it was fine for me.

Most of the games I played had issues with the CPU more than the GPU, which is a e8500. The game that pushed me to finally upgrade was FF14 of all things, becuase the asset loading was atrocious.

I can't tell if you're joking, or if Nvidia fucked Kepler that hard. I remember when Nvidia responded to the 290X besting the original Titan for a little over half the cost, so they responded with the 780ti, which was even faster. Now you're telling me that it can't even keep up with the 960 of all fucking things? The 290, not even the 290X, the regular version, is competing with Nvidia's hot-shit 970 after years of driver updates, and now the 780ti can't beat the card that can't beat the 380 non-X?

This is definitely not the right place to ask, but I might as well.

Suppose I am a hardware manufacturer, and I want to develop and sell a laptop that's not quite a gaming system, nor is it a barebones document handler. Basically, something like this Dell, which has an i5 6300 and a 960M and seems to perform reasonably well, albeit at 800 bucks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJPQfWCuxAo

My goal would be to provide a cheap, lightweight, and effective 'all in one computer'. Would using an intel be better, despite the mediocre GPU, or would it be wise to save some pennies and use an AMD CPU instead? Reason I got this idea is because I saw someone lug their Xbone to fucking Taco Bell in a briefcase and was playing CoD, and I figured a laptop would be more convenient and lightweight, while delivering a similar experience. Would this be doable, a cheap, console-spec laptop?

There wasn't any actual performance problem. It is a consumer issue. Nvidia lied about the specs and was forced, by threat of a class action suit, to refund and replace a bunch of cards because they knew they couldn't fight it in court.

The 970 is fine but Nvidia is trying its best to earn the worst company of the year award.

That's what happens when you try and push a new industry standard.

GDDR5X is really just a stopgap solution to HBM1/2 but I suspect it will eventually replace DDR3 memory on the low end, if they will ever bother stop making GPUs sub $100.

It doesn't help that devs half-ass ports anyway so we need to upgrade once in a while otherwise we need to start lowering setting or suffer from poor framerate

Personally I haven't bought a graphics card since 2012 so upgrading this year isn't a big deal to me

I know that feel. Although for 90% of the games I play, the 660 is perfect. I don't even have any problems playing Hitman and Fallout 4 despite how unoptimized they are. GTA 5 is running at 50+ FPS too with high graphics.

Guys.. I'm fucking scared.

I'm fucking nauseous. I stayed up all night because how worried I was. Polaris is our last shot to prove that AMD is a worthwhile platform. If Polaris is a flop.. then it's fucking over, AMDbros..

I wanted this to get 98fps on Anandtech. I wanted this to FORCE nvidiafags to buy a Polaris. I wanted them to cry as they're forced to withdraw $400 to play games the way they're meant to be played.

But now nvidia is putting out their own killer card. It got amazing tech and power efficiency. Now the Polaris is fucking dead for good. We fucking lost, AMDbros...

How do I calm down? How do I ease myself and face the inevitable that Polaris is yet another massive blunder from AMD?

I'd estimate 2 years at most. At any rate, there needs to be another Sandy Bridge for the next leap. Also theres the DX12 vs Vulkan matter still up in the air. MS could very well collapse if Vulkan adoption gets widespread, in effect dooming Win 10.
>>

>>336798808
No it wouldn't.
>>
>>336798760
They would, but you'll be badly bottlenecking them especially when it comes to games built on next-gen APIs that are more dependent on the number of threads your CPU can handle than the raw performance in executing a single thread.

Of course if you're still running Windows 7 next-gen APIs won't really matter to you anyway. You'd be better served buying a current card at a reduced price.
