Trench clubs and maces were a very, very common item made and used in the trenches. Soldiers found them, and the common issued entrenching tool/spade to be more useful than a long-rifle at close range.
The war was no exclusive to Europe, and certainly not exclusive to the Western Front. The colonies were a huge point of the war as well, and people from those colonies fought in large numbers in the war.

It's important to note that the Japanese live in a near 100% homogenous society. They will react in this manner because they are so far removed from the realities of a racially diverse landscape. Everybody they've ever known or interacted with is Japanese (outside of perhaps a few English teachers). They simply don't have any concept of prejudice, discrimination, or racism beyond a superficial surface layer understanding.
The criticism Hollywood is receiving has nothing to do with the people in Japan. It has everything to do with how Asians in America are being portrayed, or rather, not portrayed in the media. The people interviewed in this video have not grown up in a country where every actor they see on T.V. doesn't look like them, or when they are represented, it is often not in a flattering manner (Hangover, Joy Luck Club, Mickey Rooney, etc.) or as side characters or one-dimensional dehumanized caricatures. Ghost in the Shell represents a rare opportunity in that the original story takes place in an Asian setting, with Asian characters, which should have been Hollywood's opportunity to give Asian actors a chance to stand in the spotlight. Instead, Hollywood chose to take the safe route, they simply did not have faith in the American people as a multiethnic society to be able to swallow a movie with an Asian actor as the lead.
So to reiterate my original point, the criticism is originating from American people, and has nothing to do with people living in Japan. At the end of the day, this is a fun enjoyable video, but it really doesn't provide any new insights nor add much to the conversation at hand.

Since DICE wants to tell the untold stories of WWI, I'm going to drop a small bit of historical info on a fascinating side of the war that they should cover, and more people should know about.
That is about German general Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck and his armies escapades in East Africa.
His armies work in East Africa is regarded by many as one of, if not THE greatest guerrilla operation in history, and certainly the most successful. Why the most successful? Because he was essentially never defeated.
The army he commanded never exceed 14,000 (3,000 Germans, and TRIGGER WARNING: 11,000 Askari African soldiers), yet he was able to, without fail, keep a vastly superior allied army of ~300,000 in check.
He did this through strategic raids, use of improvised weaponry (Including the salvaged cannons from a german Battleship), and the quick and unpredictable nature of his guerilla tactics.
At one point in 1917, Lettow-Vorbeck and his army cut their own supply lines and existed effectively as "nomad tribe", living off the land and looting food and supplies from the British.
They could have easily continued fighting at the end of the war, and were reported to have far more ammunition than they could carry.
Another fun fact? Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck had great respect for his african soldiers, and often and readily appointed them to officer ranks.
I barely touched on this, it is a fascinating bit of history that I would recommend looking more into.

They aren't interchangeable, because the black soldiers were an extremely limited part of WW1, whereas the white soldiers, historically, were part of every battle.

This means that a white character could be in any given battle. Well, an American couldn't.
