I only heard about this game today. I'm interested in how much freedom it's purporting to have. One faggots video I watched said his research ship accidentally went into another empire's border and ended up having to take the long way home around the galaxy like Star Trek and discovered all sorts of ancient histories and other races on the way. That sort of stuff happening spontaneously is what I look for it these sort of games but I'm always wary it's all bullshit or hype.

At beginning it will be more like any 4x game, you'll be constantly expanding and building up your empire, you'll find some alien civilizations nearby and not much to do with them except trade or declare war.
After that the "wild west" period will be over, territory up for grabs will dry up and it will be time to focus on diplomacy and keeping your empire afloat while at the same time making the groundwork for alliances and federations this is where the 4x ends and the grand strategy elements truly take over.
I hope we can use force to subdue dissidents.

There are variants of the 3 end game threats.
Just 3 types that can occur. They are not the same every time. And change based on what type of civilization you have and what your performance was up until that point in the game.

Because it's a Paradox grand strategy being applied to the 4X concept, meaning the early game is a randomized symmetric start where anything goes as factions expand and the mid-game is a grand strategy where the borders are formed and the different factions politic shit up.
This solves the biggest problems of both GS and 4X, the railroading due to historical accuracy and the lack of an interesting late-game after the colonisation stage, respectively.
