Does it really matter anymore since most games are just console ports now?
>>
AMD stock prices are plummeting.
>>
>>336746586

When the consoles perform worse than a budget pc card, the port is to the consoles
>>
>>336746586
Only for VR. But Nvidia already had the best VR performance. Now it's got double the VR performance of AMD.
>>
I'll get the ti version as i always did
>>
>>336746515

tl;dr slightly faster than a 980Ti with better power usage
>>

>>
neat, but i'll be skipping this gen. hopefully 11x0 or whatever's next will be good too.
>>
>>336746586
It matters more actually. Shitty ports require massive amounts of power and Nvidia/AMD getting more power only means devs are gonna care even less about performance.
>>
>>336746748
VR is a literal meme until it gets its own Killer App.
>>
>Only a modest performance boost over the 980 Ti

So much for Pascal being revolutionary
>>
>being surprised the 1080 is only a small increase over the 980

I'm pretty sure at this point both CPU and GPUs are hitting the technological wall, and the best we'll see are overpriced minute upgrades. That or they're just greedy merchants who are enjoying the monopolized, stagnant market because AMD isn't competing.
>>
>>336746586
Only for VR and 4K.
>>
>180W
I think that is pretty good for a high-end card.

GTX 1060 will be 75w PCI only then?
>>
so whats the price range for this?
i'm still using my 7970, will it finally be worth upgrading?
>>
>>336747278
Probably in the $480-500 range.

And yes.
>>
>>336747278
same as gpu prices have been for ages

250-ish for x60
350-ish for x70
500+ish for x80

add maybe 10-30 dollars for brands like asus, gigabyte, and msi for custom pcbs and coolers.
>>
>599 US DOLLARS
>>
>>336747278
>i'm still using my 7970, will it finally be worth upgrading?
It was worth upgrading to 390x/980 from that card to begin with, so it will obviously be worth upgrading to Polaris/Pascal.

It'll be less good when actual power consumption numbers are tested. Nvidia always understates how much power their cards use. They do use a little less than AMD, but the gap is never as big as stated numbers. AMD is upfront about their power-hungry cards, Nvidia lists it lower, and the end result is less than 10% difference.

Same here, but I doubt the CPU is much of a bottleneck. The current i5s are minimal upgrades to the 2500k.

Though a new computer isn't the worst idea.

Also, unrelated question, do you need an Nvidia card for G-sync monitors? I want to get one because I've heard they are great, but if I need an Nvidia card, it would make sense to wait until these hit and buy them at the same time.

The card itself is not bad.
But what is bad is Nvidia marketing which they conveniently forget that 980ti exist in all of their presentation.

Titan X and 980 both have shitty launch price/performance while 980ti fix everything that is wrong with them.

Your 290x should last you a good while anyway, especially now that DX12 games will become the norm.

I'm in a similar position and have been able to put away almost 7 grand the last year. I don't really see why spending some of it on hardware is so hard to believe for some people.

I mean, when its the ONLY thing you really spend money on, whats the problem?

I live in a one bedroom apartment.
Rent is super cheap because it's one of those low income apartments.
Rent is 645USD a month and water/garbage/sewer is included in rent.
Electricity bill is around 40-50 a month and internet is 40 a month.
It's right next to the University I go to and only a mile walk to work. It's a nice neighborhood.
I have a car also which I use for stuff like grocery shopping. I bought the car a year or so ago for a 3000USD. It's was in great shape but nothing special just a 2004 VW Jetta 1.8t GLS.

If you learn to budget you can live by yourself on minimum wage.

My last CPU was a i5 2500k which I got in 2011, shortly after buying it I got a 560ti new, 2 years later I got a used 680 and then upgraded last year to a new 970. That's 3 GPUs in 4 years. I just upgraded my CPU to a i7 6700k 2 months ago, kept my 970, plan on buying 1080 as soon as it comes out.

>>336755119
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Path_tracing

>Path tracing is a computer graphics Monte Carlo method of rendering images of three-dimensional scenes such that the global illumination is faithful to reality. Fundamentally, the algorithm is integrating over all the illuminance arriving to a single point on the surface of an object. This illuminance is then reduced by a surface reflectance function (BRDF) to determine how much of it will go towards the viewpoint camera. This integration procedure is repeated for every pixel in the output image. When combined with physically accurate models of surfaces, accurate models of real light sources (light bulbs), and optically-correct cameras, path tracing can produce still images that are indistinguishable from photographs.

Really? Didn't look terribly impressive from the beta footage. Had a vague feeling it somehow looked worse then the original, though that's likely a design thing.

yes. Titan X is still overkill for 1080p. 1070 is faster than Titan X.

I ran the Mirror's Edge beta just fine on one 970 maxed at 1440p.
I hope it supports SLI though.
Currently the most demanding game I have come across was either The Witcher 3 with settings above max or GTA V at max settings when you hit the bottleneck in the fields of grass with the max shadows setting.

The Witcher 3 gets the nod because it's demanding not from a bottleneck but from forcing the render distance further out.

680 was the flagship first gen 28nm card just like 1080 is the first gen 16nm card.

extremely unlikely. The Tesla version of GP100 will only just be sold to server OEMs in early 2017. Maybe there will be a Titan in early 2017, but the xx80ti version will not come until mid or late 2017

THE TRUE QUESTION IS:
WHICH GAME WILL COME WITH THOSE CARDS?
AT RELEASE MAYBE NO GAME. BUT BY AUGUST/SEPTEMBER?

CPUs are annoying me. The year on year increases in performance is so small, I don't wanna buy anything new.

Got a 3570k. It's getting to the point where I'm going to have to upgrade CPU and motherboard because it'll bottleneck moderately.

Even though my PC still feels snappy. These GPUs need a slightly better CPU I imagine.

99% of games released in the last 5 years + the next 3 years will be DX 11.1.
Literally only the next generation of consoles will even contemplate using DX12 no matter what Microsoft try to tell you.
DX 12 will require devs to literally throw out a decade worth of work for minuscule gains considering the problems with consoles aren't CPU bound the GPUs on the consoles are too pathetic for there to be even a significant improvement on DX12/Vulkan. That and literally the biggest performance gain that can be seen for this is literally for i7s and i5s at the top end of CPUs.
