It's not dead but its on life support and soon to be dead by the end of the year. There is a steady trickle of weeb games and indies. Personally i love my vita i've only had it for a year though so the back log is thick but im having a blast with it. When Sony finally does kill it (which will be soon) it'll basically be just like the psp, an emulation machine.

It sells well in Japan which is why it gets support.
It gets games, so in terms of software to play, more is coming.
So if you are investing in Sony for the sole purpose of the Vita's sales performance, maybe its not a good idea. But I'm not sure what that means in terms of being a person who just plays videogames on it.
If you like videogames, and want to play them on the technically best dedicated portable game console, go for it. It all comes down to personal wants, tastes, and such. For me, I have 4 games coming in June alone, and that's more than any other console I own atm.
I won't be surprised if the Vita continues to get games even after the 3DS.

As someone with a PSP vita and 3RD the vita is easily the best. My 3DS has been collecting dust for years. All the games it gets are gimped by the awful hardware and resolution. The only good games it has are monster hunters, the rest is mediocre Nintendo first party titles all of which are worse than anything released for previous Nintendo consoles.
People can shitpost about the vita all they want but the fact is it's still very much alive and is still getting tons of good games not just shovelware.

I think you overestimate the popularity of Monster Hunter in the West.
I don't see how sales will give you more games to play in the end, or the fact that you already haven't beaten MHX. Most people are already past it, because it has little to no content and one of the worst entries in the series.
I think part of the bad experience with action games in general is that they play like shit on the 3DS with that crappy thumbpad and terrible...well everything.
