>There still hasn't been a good The Thing game made
It's so fucking easy, god damn it. Have us be The Thing invading people's bodies and trying to complete certain objectives, meanwhile people get paranoid as fuck.
>>
>>336693265

There was a game online just like this but instead of Anatartica it was like a Jason Voorhees summercamp. Think it was called Slasher or something
>>
>>336693783
>Online
Ruined just like that. When players know what's going on and start using meta bullshit to win, it's no fun anymore.
It has to be single player.
>>
>>336689861
Not making literally every teammate turn within two levels could have added to the suspense. They are all scripted too, I clearly remember that you need to escort a mechanic somewhere in the middle of the game through a room full of necromo-- I mean things, and he dies very easily. I think that's right after the part you are captured and lose all your weapons. After he fixes the panel for you, which was the only reason you needed him, he becomes a monster within two steps inside the next room. What's even the point? There are also guys who need some "trust" or whatever to follow you, which you simply gain by giving them a weapon from your inventory which you are hoarding anyway. The game implies you need to do a blood test on yourself in front of them but that's bullshit.
>>
ITT games no one played.
>>
>>336689861
the thing was alright though. it could've been alot better but for the time it was decent. adapting the movie's feel over to a video game would be very difficult regardless. the only way I could see it working is a multiplayer focused thing like TTT or The Ship.
>>
I really hope you guys actually understood the ending of the movie
>>
>>336698403
What exactly?
That both of them are infected?
>>
>>336698525
They weren't infected, you find Childs dead and MacReady saves you at the end.
>>
>>336698403
of what? the thing? what's so deep about that? two guys left with ambiguity over whether or not they're human, seems pretty straightforward to me.
>>
>>336693265

>>
>>336698525
>>336698718
The "alcohol" at the end is actually gasoline
>>
>>336698613
Just as with Colonial Marines I refuse to accept the game as canon
>>
>>336698403
Mac didn't give Childs whiskey, he gave him the gasoline he was using to blow shit up. That's why he chuckles to himself when Childs drinks it up and doesn't react in any way to it.
>>
>>336698805
where is this said?
>>
>>336698805
>>336698982
This has never been confirmed.

And even if that was the case why wouldn't the thing just kill MacReady with the flamethrower?
>>
>>336699015
It isn't, just a neat theory people bring up.
MacReady shoves alcohol down the computer to win against it at the beginning of the movie
MacReady shoves "alcohol" down the thing to learn of its identity at the end of the movie

Pure kino
>>
thing ending theories are so fucking retarded.

the whole movie has a running theme of ambiguity and paranoia, and that's how it ends. Carpenter meant for it to be that way, there are no hidden messages or true endings

Mind that you find Childs frozen to death at the beginning of the game. Which makes no sense, because that implies he wasn't infected, yet MacReady lives which doesn't explain why would he leave Childs freezing to death instead either incinerating him or escaping together with him.

>>336699540
some pingu/the thing parody

just search for thingu on yt
>>
My personal theory is that MacReady was able to kill The Thing (and save the world in the long run), but both him and Childs die miserably at the end of the movie completely paranoid over one another.

A really neat thing about The Thing's ending is that it's ambiguous, though, it really could be some of the crazier theories people drop.
>>
>>336699638
In the last scene, Childs doesn't have any visible breath while MacReady does.
>>
>>336699638
To be completely fair, whether that's true or not, this is most likely just Carpenter fucking with people like he loves doing.
>>
>>336693265
Literally spacestation 13

>30-40 real players
>changeling round has 3-4 players disguised as humans
>you have to kill and absorb 10 other people's dna and escape
>you can transform into people you've absorbed and steal their clothes to make the look
>regular crewmembers can out you if they draw your blood and use a heat source on it
>you can turn into a shambler and fight off a crowd
>if you die, you headspider onto the nearest player and eventually control him if surgery isn't done

Paranoia ensues as soon as a changeling is reported, sometimes regular players murder eachother if they're stupid enough/jump to conclusions without testing for forensics
>>
>>336699441
I wouldn't say THE best, but it's definitely among the best. Hard to be beat that constant feeling of dread, paranoia, and top notch practical effects that still look great to this day.

That's no fun, m8. I've played Space Station, but it's not the same thing. People know it's a game and they're metagaming. That's the inherent disadvantage of multiplayer games.

I want to be in a game where I'm The Thing and people are paranoid as fuck and I have to use stealth to complete objectives. People that were coded that way, not neckbeards that are fucking around.

What prequel? I only know the remake, which was pretty gud.
>>
>>336699972
Tried seeing if John Carpenter said anything regarding it, and it seems like he's mostly ignored it, but here's something interesting
>Upon finding John Carpenter's 1982 film The Thing, the two convinced Universal to create a prequel instead of a remake, as they felt that remaking Carpenter's film would be like "paint(ing) a moustache on the Mona Lisa"
At least they knew they could never live up to the original. I think modern prequels are a "give or take" type deal. If you like them, consider them canon, if not? Forget them like time itself.
>>
>>336700194
Well at least they got paid.

And not having practical effects was the least of the movies problems.

I remember people bringing up the concept of a Thing: Isolation in a previous Thing thread from before, and while that sounds neat in a way, that whole scriptedness issue that the Thing game had would definitely kind of ruin it, especially for repeat playthroughs.

The game was awesome apart from the trigger points where one of your squad would suddenly become The Thing

>walking down corridor
>one guy turns
>kill him
>load save from one minute ago
>test the guy to see if he's infected
>all clear
>ten seconds later he turns

They did some cool shit with it at certain set pieces but it would have been better if they actually implemented it in the actual gameplay more.
Testing your men was basically just a way to raise squad morale
>>
>>336709716
The community?

When you play the game, you make yourself a wee character. A 32x32 thing, you change the hair and colour.

Fuckers will still obsess over these things. Waifu and husbando posting killed /ss13g/.

There's MMO tier "THEY CHANGED THE TINIEST LITTLE THING I CANT BELIEVE IT GAME RUIIIINNEEEEEED" shittery.

The players themselves are the greatest scum of the earth. Its like Hues and Slavs inbreeding for thousands of generations.

The admins are always jaded and broken. No fun allowed.

They hate newcomers. There's never more than 600 people playing it at once. Anytime a /v/ thread about ss13 goes up, the "panic bunker" goes down, preventing any new connections to the server.

decent game but crippled by console limitations. You can see how they had all these big ideas but could not follow through... the test needles being an obvious point. I want to believe this is made up, but it's something the people who hate free weekends would do if they could.

i have netflix and i can just watch whatever the fuck i want, no need to queue anything

is this some americlap bullshit?
>>
>>336713721
This is 100% true. Ask the /vg/ thread.

When the bunker is up you have to PM an admin and ask to be let in.

im honestly sad i never got into this game when it was first popular

i tried it but it looked so damn hard to get into...
>>
>>336714128
It's all memes and waifu posting in there. Excep these waifus aren't cute animes. These are emotionless 32x32 sprites that barely resemble humans.

It's not a good place.
>>
>>336714336
In it's prime, SS13 rarely exceeded 1000 players at a time.

It is hard to get into, but when you get in and you understand the culture, it's a blast.

But then you get burnt out. And you burn out like Fort McMurray

>>336704454
it's still good today. Animatronic shit is way better than cg garbage. Millennial here.

Screw ye.

It was good despite being hard and sometimes rage inducing.

>>336693265
Worst part? There was supposed to be a superior sequel in production...BUT WAS CANNED.

>>336700296
>He's in the game.

And it's hinted that he was either snatched when the military waltzed in, or that he was a Thing.
>>
how would you even make a good thing game? that shit sounds really hard to design..
>>
>>336710404
It was either scripted, or they made it so to show that The Thing was learning.

>>336713284
Dear God no. That was horrifying but not in a scary way.
>>
>>336715097

that is even more stupid than having friends that turn out to be things after they help you blast on them... although hero guy is supposed to be highly resistant to it?

Why would mcready help you take out the asshole villain who wanted to fly them out of Antarctica? Inb4 he was an out of control giant flower monster... well he was I guess but whatever. If mcready was a thing with access to a chopper why didn't he just fly out and infect shit all over
>>
>>336715117
It's not impossible, but it's indeed hard to pull off.

Simply put, just make the atmosphere heavy, make everyone start going crazy and paranoid, and if you really need to include cliche shit like jump scares then make them really rare and only after some intense build-up.

Yeah. Blake was resistant somehow to being assimilated despite being continuously bitten, mauled, lubricated with some bizarre shit and so on.

And yeah, MacReady turning out to be a Thing would be also stupid.

Also dunno about the later part of your post. He may have used it to make himself trustworthy...or dunno. Just dunno. Everything involving The Thing is complicated.

First half was alright, then it turned into a really shitty generic shooter
>>
>>336689861
it's got a few unique gimmicks to it. the squad trust system was never really done again and it was cool that larger humanoid things could only be killed by fire.
>>
>>336718875
It got boring pretty fast, blasting them until HP hit red then switching to flamethrower.
>>
>>336700856
Del Taco's propossed Moutains of Madness was very influenced (or infected) by the Thing. Look up the leaked screenplay.
>>
>>336719231
when i was 13 it was the scariest shit ever though.
>>
>>336719441
I know right. I played it when I was 12, I got through my spook by saying fucking it, closed my eyes then ran blindly into the next area. I did huge leaps so I could be sure that I'm aggroing some monsters on me. Still, when my friends transformed it was the scariest shit ever. Especially when multiple ones did at the same time outta nowhere.
>>
>>336706993

I think what we agreed to was that the game would have to be completely random, both in who you play and the layout of the base. This way, you could start off as the Thing without knowing it, or be a human and find out your coworker is a Thing because you decided to punch them in the back of the head to test their humanity.

who is the most based horror protagonist of all time and why is it R.J. Macready?

fuck. both that and avp2010.

at least avp had a little bit of decent fun to squeeze out of it I guess.

>>336706709
Video are inherently scripted. Literally they are scripted in every sense.
>>
why do I get a feeling that Telltale is eventually going to make a Thing game?
>>
>>336722818
AVP was ok though, at least for the Alien campaign. Pred was meh, and CM was pretty bad except for the Predator fight, which got a scream from me.
