Imo abyss is the only tales game with a decent story and cast but they aren't spectacular by any means.
I would say vesperia too thanks to the shotas development but their designs are easily some of the worst in the series.

What JRPG similarities does it have? You have a self designed protagonist and you can choose your own responses in dialogue rather than it being a prewritten script (choose from multiple prewritten scripts sure, but there is choice involved), it uses a TPS real time combat system, which by ME2 doesn't even have stats or attributes of any kind governing it (in fact, ME2 isn't even an RPG, it's a story driven TPS, there's pretty much no separation between character skill and player skill, ME3 is slightly better about it but still barely qualifies as RPG in the most rudimentary sense), and it uses (yes, dated) attempts at photorealistic graphics rather than anime art.
