Could this game save 4X?
>>336666252
Legit excited for it. Especially the anomaly/late game crises elements of the game that refer to classic sci-fi. All wrapped up in a big 4X. Took a day off to get into it.
what the fuck is stellaris?
>>336666345
From my perspective:
It is a space themed colonization type game in which you can make your own people and decide what their boons and flaws. You explore galaxies and meet with other species and interact either peacefully or with extreme prejudice. The objective of the game is to stand the test of time and survive an end game catastrophe.
Sounds fun. But I never really played a game like this.

This is what I'm most interested in. Late-game 4X games all seem to just settle down into an endless grind as you consolidate and then creep outward with your military/culture/influence until you win. Anything that will shake that up is worth a look.
>>336667380
I also like the ongoing quests during the initial gameplay to make it feel like there's some purpose to progressing, rather than simply blobbing.

Well sword of the stars already does this. Does it really well. There's heaps of random encounters and events, but late game only 1 crazy one will spawn.
Can be a planet destroyer that just goes from planet to planet destroying them, an intergalactic peacekeeper that sets rules and limits and fucks up anyone that breaks them or a replicator moon that eats planets and creates more replicator.
Can't recall if there are others. I'm looking forward to what Stellaris does.

Just play the first, ignore the second. Looks and sounds like ass, but it's legit one of my favourite games. Pseudo random tech tree, very different factions, lots of random factors, real time space battles with physics so things like tractor beams and grav mines are actually feasible, etc.

What? Faster research speed in ANY game is incredibly valuable, it gives you a big edge over others and this is emphasized when you eventually get to war. It's not necessarily the be-all end-all strategy to take materialist/intelligent but it's a combination that makes sense.

Because they are going to be insanely powerful galaxy-threatening powers, and making them controllable by players is dumb. Same applies to fallen empires and how they can't be playable.
>>336678987
Well, you can probably tag-switch to them as I said, which is not official but it makes everything playable.
The Devs said so in the MP stream.

You're misinterpreting what the devs have already said numerous times. You can switch to AI empires if your empire is eliminated or if you join in progress. But you cannot join as fallen empires or late game threats as they are too powerful.

Removing unrewarding minutia. (This can be a plus or minus, but just go play Aurora if you want to go full autism)
More nuanced diplomacy.
Bigger variety of events and flavor to the world.
Graphics, if you care about that.
Multiplayer
Modding tools that support total conversions.
The biggest things that Distant Worlds does best are the Civilian sector and sophisticated automation vs. micromanagement options. Stellaris does seem to be doing the latter pretty well.
>>336684497
Different game, but Endless Legend did their diplomatic / pacifist faction in a very novel way. Basically the faction starts with the location of all the players' capitals and is able to communicate with them from the start of the game. They're also best at accumulating Prestige, which is a currency used to provide empire wide bonuses or commit diplomatic actions.
The main kicker was that they could force peace and alliance on any player they wanted. While their main victory condition was pacifist (accumulate diplomatic points by being in peace or alliance treaty with as many players as possible), they could also wage war really effectively. In case of offense; declare war as usual, quickly ninja few enemy cities then force a peace treaty before they could react. In case of a losing war quickly accumulate prestige and prevent the enemy faction from finishing you off.
Where my fascist xenophobic theocracy brethren at?
>>336684497
Think of it this way
If you're a pacifist, chances are you're playing very diplomatically. Your neighbors may not be pacifist. You can be the one to convince them all to join a federation of your making to fight the galactic scourge.
You too can play your part

Not end game crisis but in the multiplayer stream a forgotten empire easily repeled the forces of almost every human player.
Anyone got suggestions for this?
>>336689079
Likely they attacked it simply because it was the last day of the 2-day multiplayer event, it was still mid-game where it was really too early to tackle them. I think in MP games with friends we will probably try to do the same and split the worlds between ourselves.
If I were to create a 40k mod, I'd probably divide the Imperium to different factions to better portray the ethos picks. Otherwise, Imperium is pretty much a fanatical everything.
Maybe something like Imperial Navy being Fanatical Militarist & Xenophobe, while a Rogue Trader dynasty possibly a Fanatical Individualist & Xenophile, and so on and so on.
Are the planets and systems randomly generated? Is Sol, Alpha Centauri, etc. always going to be there?
How would you recreate the Culture?
let's assume no point limit for now
Individualist
Xenophile
Pacifist
Materialist
Government type is tricky, since there is no "AI oligarchy". Some mix of direct democracy and science directorate
Adaptive
Natural sociologists
Quick learners
>>336689424
Oh yeah for sure and it was horribly coordinated. They did wait until they superior force or whatever that number is called but the forgotten eventually brought in big renforcement fleets.
It was mentioned that forgotten empires don't rebuild ships so I think it will end up being more of an attrition thing which would have taken too long to show.
I need something new because EU4 is going down in flames, and fast.
Has there ever been another game so fundamentally ruined by patches?
>>336689282
I wouldn't call the Mongols adaptive, they could only thrive in steppe/plain environments and they barely lasted a couple generations
>>336689431
Different empires in Stellaris-terms would better suit the Imperium given it's size.
This is going to be fun.
>>336689735
Randomly generated.
But you can pick Sol as the starting system. Then you get all the planets like Mars, Venus and so on (but the minerals, energy, anomalies and other stuff in the system is still randomized).
If you don't pick Sol starting, then there is a random chance it appears somewhere in the galaxy. Then it might have a human empire, an irradiated wasteland, or primitive human civilization, and so on.

Stellaris starts off much like other 4x games, where you start off on your homeworld, explore the galaxy, build an empire, etc.
Once it reaches mid to late game and the empires have expanded to fill the map, it becomes more like a Grand Strategy game in terms of scope and diplomacy.
This unique hybrid approach is why people are so interested and have high hopes for Stellaris. It has the potential to make end-game much more interesting than typical 4xs, and it has a small symmetical start that GSs don't have.

>>336695081
Hah.
The Hiveworld is a leviathan-class ship now, instead of dreadnought-class. No big deal; 'largest class available' is how it was in #1.
When it finishes eating a world it sends out Herald Moons. Like, every system within fifteen lightyears or something. These are dreadnought-class ships. Only one. Not too difficult to fight or destroy, even, if you have a combat fleet ready.
They go out, visit a system for one turn to survey it, then return to report on their findings. Of the ones that return, it totals all resources in the systems, then embarks to the one with the largest sum. With its full fleet of herald moons.
So you can keep it from coming at you by destroying every herald moon in one of your systems, but if it does wind up deciding to visit, it comes with an attendant fleet of dreadnoughts.
It is sort of boring from a stand point but no jokey here when you are in a nice fresh air room and you oxygenated out it sum good sheet playing this kind of thing, you can get creative and you need good circulation to appreciate this sort of game. If you aint got these prerequisites for this shit it move slow and is dull as poop so faster pace is a must. Call of duty fantastic for autism.

>>336696442
SoTS 1 or 2? Which should I play?
>>336684497
I believe pacifists get access to defensive tech and bonuses later on, also federations exist so you can employ more violent civilizations to fight enemies while you pull the strings in the background and manage administration.
Anyways I'm super psyched for Stellaris, I'm glad it's real time since turn based games start to wear thin in the late game when turns take 5 hours to process.
>>336697050
1.
11111111.

>>336697569
It should also be noted that unlike every other 4x ever, there's actual timeline and story and canon progression between 1 and 2. It's not just civ 1, civ 2, civ 3, etc.
So play the original first for a variety of reasons.
>>336666252
I will like early game multiplayer before everyone finds the exploits
but afterwards everyone will spam optimum builds and fucking cheese it
I'll probably play something like this at the start.
Until I get bored and start to cheat/mod like fuck in SP.
>>336684497
Pacifists are encouraged to make friends and form federations, while your neighbors might not agree with each other, a good pacifist player could make them all see you as the voice of reason and you'll be able to lead a united galaxy against whatever end game threat you face.
Not to mention that end game invasions don't always happen, you could go through the whole game without having AI revolts or an invasion from outside the galaxy
I think it's cool that federations can have a separate fleet that can be built with components from each member.
>>336696313

>>336697815

>>336698052
While I'm hyped for the federation stuff, I'm worried that the AI will be dumb as fuck to the point of declaring war against a Fallen Empire and dragging the entire federation to their doom.
Members should be allowed to vote on matters related to war and what not so if some retarded player tries some dumb shit while being president, the rest of the federation can shut him down.
>>336698597
>Members should be allowed to vote on matters related to war and what not so if some retarded player tries some dumb shit while being president, the rest of the federation can shut him down.

If you have some patience the second one is quite playable. ~4 crashes, 250 turns. AI isn't great, but mutliplayer works.
Not 'good' or 'finished', but playable and fun if you happen to like the changes.
Can you turn off those game ending events like massive alium invasions? I don't mind them being there, but if I just want to conquer every other AI in there.
>>336699096
Last time I tried it, I summoned a giant space whale, in combat it would do absolutely nothing apart from flying around and upon exiting combat, the game would crash. it's just one of the possible futures for sol, in that particular one earth became a tomb world which is uninhabitable for pretty much everyone but was covered in a species of giant mutated cockroaches who had an affinity with the tomb world. The player decided to elevated them to a star faring civilization so he could use them as population in his empire to colonize everything.
it's just one of the many possibilities for sol, you can find humans in the bronze age, or they can be a space faring civilization even. they might also be a fallen empire for all I know

Pirate, you might like it. I started hating it because every forced update brought new and more stupid mechanics to the game.
>>336704528
you can read the bonuses and find out
>>336704528
Elections give mandates which if you complete you get some easy influence to spend on edicts and shit.
>>336704528
Democracies have frequent (oligarchies infrequent) elections. This allows your leader to change frequently too, giving you more variability in your bonuses. Plus there are some mini-goals (election promises) to try and achieve too.
Autocracies last until death of leader.
So does anyone know what the oversized ship, oversize space station and elite assault army actually do?
How much will the full game cost in 5 years? Civ V costed at least $3000 with all the DLC expansion shit
>>336705127
Presumably, they're a special unit slightly better than the defaults.
>>336704528
Ability to change leaders if you want to use new bonuses, or keep the same leader in power if you want to stay the course. They also just give different bonuses. Divine Mandate lets you build a mausoleum that takes up a planet slot to give -10% ethics divergence to that one planet, or you can just be a Theocratic Oligarchy and have that bonus across your entire empire inherently.
Yeah maybe in 2 years when all the dlc is out
>>336705217
Civ V had only two relevant pieces of DLC (expansions)
>>336691227
I can see volcanic worlds being a common enough request that they release them at some point.
What's an optimal fast expansion rape everything build?
So what will the bigger expansions be? I assume nomadic fleet empires are given, maybe a military revamp of the military to make ships more customization and armies less simplistic, and possibly an AI controlled private economy like in Distant Worlds because at the moment it seems pretty simplistic.
>>336706480

>>336707334
I dunno if there's a better game, there probably is, but Star Wars: Rebellion is the game I can think of with the highest amount of stealth/counter-stealth gameplay. Always trying to discover ship and troop movements and where bases are being built, keep track of enemy leaders and spies to figure out what they are doing, blowing up ships and construction facilities with commando teams and kidnapping leaders to hide on prison ships flying around the outer rim, trying to incite enemy planets to rebel to force your enemy to commit diplomats or troops to suppress them, all sorts of stuff. It's pretty old so you have to be used to old game clunkiness, but it's on GoG and has the most in-depth stealth gameplay I can think of in a strategy game.
>>336666252
No, it's a Paradox game, and Paradox devs don't know how to make gameplay.
They should be integrated into Microsoft under the Paint division.
I just want to play a race of people that learn how to make clones through bio engineering which ends up leading to the ability to modify individual genes. Then through tons of iterations make living ships which leads to in space queens that birth new ships and colonize asteroid belts. Willing to defend themselves but not aggressive.

You can only personally manage a certain number of planets at a time. If you go over the control limit you start to take increasing debuffs based on how many planets. Your own species does not get upset if you are xenophobes.
Steam board section for that game is kinda funny.
For example, 350 replies thread about how DLCs are good and that they are totally worth the price. And how they are okay, because "you dont have to buy them".
>>336721793
It's useful if some shit tier species with bad traits starts growing on one of your worlds.
>>336721907
Take off the name and then we'll talk to you
>>336721907
The EUIV crowd got pretty mad at the last 2 DLC
>>336721543
They literalyl said that the only reason they don't have holocaust stuff in HoI is because it's irrelevent to the war and that's what the game is about. If someone provided solid evidence that it was a big deal to the military affairs they'd put it in.
>>336722067
Which is true, a Holocaust button would add literally nothing to the gameplay
>>336722125
Funnily enough, a friend of mine actually wanted to do his thesis on if the holocaust's logistics actually had an impact onto the war.
He was told he couldn't do it because he can't speak german or russian and thus couldn't get any sources.
>>336722364
That's a shame, I'd be interested to read that paper
I absolutely love history

I can't wait to enslave xenos and force them to be shock troops
>>336722023
What they were about? Im kinda curious.
Recolored flags or something?
>>336722364
Those people were correct though. If you can't read original documents, you have to rely on translations and interpretations that have gone through some pretty amazing ideological filtering.

Take the name off
There's no reason for you to have a name

Clone armies are confirmed in, just like slave, android, robot, xenomorph, psionic and gene modified armies.
Robot armies become risky as shit if you make true AI though.
Jesus, man.
I hope we get to run into machine empires
>>336723239
>clone armies
YES
YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS
>>336723268
>AI rebellion
I'm assuming it's kinda like one of those apocalypse events - You go full science and start building loads of robot pops and being relaxed with AI regulation laws. Then the robots become Skynet and kill everyone.
>>336723239
what about clone populace though?
Like, I want my factories to be manned by clones of the best worker of the year.
>>336723268
>Ruler titled as emperor
>>336723268
None spawn initially, otherwise they would be too powerful. They only arise when you research AI and it subsequently rebels. Note that other empires can research AI as well, so someone's fuckup can become a galactic problem
>>336723803
Keep in mind, AI overlordship is one of the late government styles you can unlock through research, so it may be possible to simply embrace the inevitable and let Skynet take over your empire without bloodshed.
>>336723550
Pretty much.
Also keep in mind there are Fallen Empire that are like "Guardians of Technology" meaning if they see you researching stuff that could destroy the galaxy they can and will fuck your shit up
>>336672176
>I goose this is where you die.
>>336723593
They have not commented on it, but considering we already know we can have slave, android, robot etc pops, chances are that we need a clone population to actually have clone armies. Cant really say for sure though.
Here is link for what we know about pops:

What needs to be saved? 4X is fucking brilliant.
Endless Space, Endless Legend, Galac Civ 3. All those have been fantastic and those are the ones I bought recently. Endless Legend is especially good.

is there a console like other paradox games? i just want to cheat like a madman
So is there land based combat in this game or is it all done on ships?

Most likely. If the game was out I'd checkUnless the game is out, I've not checked
reminds me of star control,
i cant fucking wait for this and i only discovered it yesterday. (scott manley)
i hope you can do really advanced shit like enlighten unga bungas on other plants and take them under your wing to aid you in your quest for science (or pretend you are their god)
>>336715220
Someone on the stream asked about it during a Blorg stream and they said no planet destroying weapons at release, but that it was something to consider for the future (So DLC probably).
>>336724698
There's different types of infantry you can have so yes, but it's not as deep as space combat from what I hear.
>>336724952
Yep, you can do basically every sci-fi trope from the perspective of the aliens

Interesting....
So, slightly related...
The trait fanatical collectivism. Does that slavery thing mean they like being taken over by xenos? Or does that apply only when their own race does it to them? Cause there is another trait that modifies xeno slavery i saw.
The Weavers of Truth are an anthropoid race of spider-like beings who collectively believe in a prophecy foretelling of the coming age of Psionics. They believe the Psions are the chosen ones who will usher in a never-ending age of enlightenment and that the Qi'xthra shall achieve transcendence by following them. As such, they are obsessed with Psi, and with the mysterious substance known as Zro, for it is known to enhance psi abilities greatly. They believe those born without the gift, the so-called "mindless ones" are fit to be treated as little more than cattle, livestock to serve as slaves committed to manual labor or shock troops in battle.
Think Navigator's Guild from Dune, but anthropomorphic spiders instead of slugs, fanatically religious about the Golden Path and the spice melange, and dependent upon a robust slave economy to maintain their empire.
>go to play EU4 to rev up to this

I had no idea what I was doing and I struggled on Ironman as it was. Now it's bad. I might just load up non-Ironman and cheat until I learn it all again. But I noticed you can't make SUPER RAPE MACHINES Poland now either.

shiieettt,
i wonder if you can pull an Ur-quan and become the slave overlord of the galaxy and have everyone do their fighting for you or face annihilation

why does it need saving when i can fire up Master of Orion 2 whenever I want
no space 4x game has ever come close to touching it

I for one welcome our immortal god emperor.
So I was trying to make the Federation from Starship Troopers, the Military Republic government is basically them to a T, but I don't really know what traits to give them. Talented seemed like the best pick given how the government is suppose to promote better leaders through harsh discipline, but I don't know if any others fit.
>>336725092
>Covert Infiltration
>This is an interesting one. Essentially, agents that have been surgically altered to resemble individuals from a primitive species are sent to infiltrate their society. Political and military leaders are gradually replaced, until a point is reached where the primitives can be made to willingly accept an offer of annexation. This spares the need of a messy ground invasion, but more importantly, the primitives will be more positively inclined towards their new overlords, since they are living under the illusion that they accepted their rule willingly.
Ayy we XCOM now
>>336725405
Endless Space and Galactic Civ 2 + 3 are great for me.
>>336725140
It means that they are much more accepting of having slavery of any kind in their empire, does not matter the species. Collectivist ethos is all about everyone being a cog in the machinery, the wellbeing of all over the wellbeing for the individuals.
Xenophobic give acceptance for slavery of everyone that is not your species, but no tolerance for enslaving any of your own.

Avoid 2 like it was poison. They made terrible design decisions and overall it was a huge step back.
Get 1 with all the expansions for a great time, I have over 600 hours in SotS and a little under 6 in SotS 2.
>>336725071
Nice nice... Reinhard approves it 100%
>>336671727
This one gradually ramps up the GS elements as the game progresses and plays more like a 4x in the beginning. If you suck at GS and want to get better this looks like a winner.
Can i make the Golden Horde in space?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuELLd3Ec4U The soundtrack is fantastic. It really has a Mass Effect feeling to it.
>>336725484
I'd remove Talented and pick Conformists + Resilient instead, as a military republic you'll have tons of good generals to choose as leaders.
>>336725606
So you're intentionaly nerfing yourself by going -3 in negative traits and then +1 in positive
Looking at the ethos choices I kind of wish there was an technologist/luddite axis. I know they intended for Materialist/Spiritualist to kind of fulfill that role, but it doesn't work since those are a stance on the nature of the universe not really technology. I want to play as a technology and religion oriented empire so that I can be the Adeptus Mechanicus.
>>336726632
Sounds good but I think the issue there is that I have to pick a negative trait have enough points for both. Maybe non-adaptive is a good negative option?
>>336726986
Luddites wouldn't be space-faring empires though, would they?
Materialist/spiritualist does actually have an effect on technology though, supposedly there are different technologies that are exclusive to either branch. The spiritualists for example are apparently able to develop psychic powers and use technology based on that, like founding a Navigators Guild that allows them to improve their FTL travel using psykers.
>>336727404
>Luddites wouldn't be space-faring empires though, would they?
Not necessarily, I was thinking more along the lines of it being their specific stance on science and technology, do they view science with caution, suspicion, or maybe fear, of do they embrace it with abandon and seek out knowledge whatever the consequences?
Materialist/Spiritualist is more a stance on the nature of the universe. Is the universe just what we can see and observe or is the some greater part of it that is explainable by science? It's not a statement on science and technology itself.
Come to think of it, I'd also maybe like a Purist or Transhuman trait or ethic that makes it so that you pops either despise or embrace gene mods/cybernetics.
>>336728715
>Materialist/Spiritualist is more a stance on the nature of the universe. Is the universe just what we can see and observe or is the some greater part of it that is explainable by science? It's not a statement on science and technology itself.
If you view their descriptions as about technology itself, you kind of can interpret it as machine-cult vs machine understanding.
