Saying Fate is action oriented in the first place is wrong. Zero had plenty of action but FSN otherwise is mostly an introspective work told from point of view of a single character's mind and psychology. Fights are never the point, despite what the so called ubw anime wanted to do with the work. Even fights themselves in the source material were portrayed more of a split-second mind game between characters than something flashy. People who say this don't understand the entire theme running through the route: imitation vs original.
Shirou is a fake. He has an imitation ideal, and a power that results from imitating. The entire story focuses on this concept, and whether or not it's wrong.
The conclusion of the Archer fight tells you that he's okay with himself and his dream, but the narrative needs to put the guy to the test, to show, rather than tell, that he can be a hero. Gil is the ultimate opportunity here.
Gil is the original Heroic Spirit. He holds all the original weapons, and has a dream of killing countless people. By Shirou overcoming Gil, it proves he has what it takes to follow through with his goal, and it proves that imitating isn't inherently or inferior.
People who say it's forced are completely blind to the story laid out in front of them. There are layers to FSN, and while I'm not saying it's Ulysses, the themes here are something you should be able to understand if you took middle school English.

You do not understand how this medium works, nor how FSN works as a whole. Multiple realities are ingrained into the story. that's how the entire plot with Archer happens. You can't say that "they don't count" because you choose not to read them.
You can choose not to read UBW or HF. You can just to stop reading half way through Fate, but the content's still there. The story's still there. It's all factored in.

What matters to Gil, more than anything, is crafting a legend that stands the test of time.
Going all out on a high school kid and turning him into a smear on the road isn't very kingly.
And that's part of why Shirou's victory was so absolute. In the end, he did make Gil try and pull out all the stops, so that was a clear admittance that Shirou was worthy, but what's more, is that Shirou even managed to take him down before he could do anything.

He had picked up a lot of Archer's skill and talent, due to magic around the two of them going wonky because the same person shouldn't exist in two separate instances at once. Watching Archer and attempting to imitate him helped Shirou come into his own abilities at a highly enhanced rate. He basically progressed through ten years of training in the span of a couple of weeks.
His body hadn't quite caught up to where his mind was, though, which was why he needed Rin's mana to sustain his reality marble in the fight against Gilgamesh.

The general idea though is that there is a lot of morality discussion about this subject at that point of the game.
From a survival of the species point of view Angra had to be taken out, but it couldn't be called an issue of good and evil, as Angra had no understanding of good and evil, just as an animal. The treacly fantasy writing attempts to dress up personal disagreements as philosophical battles, but the ultimate effect often just comes off as needlessly obtuse or totally incoherent. We know Shirou's naive, we don't need lofty speeches from every other character expressing that fact.
It's honestly a little unbelievable - the show spends three straight episodes repeating the fairly self-explanatory climax to Shirou's character arc, a personal resolution that most shows would likely relegate to the last third of a single episode. That might be acceptable for a long-running shounen attempting to stretch content, but for a focused single-season show, a move like that is a backbreaking failure of composition. Unlimited Blade Works' prose has always been labored and purple, but when scenes of over-explaining monologue were interspersed between exciting action setpieces, that weakness was a little easier to bear. Here, a combination of poor pacing and repetitive content essentially grinds the show to a halt, making this second half an often tedious journey.

The anime was a solid adaptation of the UBW route, but people who go into it expecting it to be a stand alone experience often come out feeling confused.
It tells the story of the middle of the VN. There's a part before it, there's a part after it. Looking at it on its own is a mistake. It's like watching the second movie in a trilogy without anything else, and expecting a full narrative.
No one would think that's a reasonable position to make, but these reviewers seem to, even when the 2006 anime already exists, and provides a foundation, and the third route is set to come.

The first fight between Saber and Lancer doesn't really have a philosophical bent, it's there to establish Saber's capabilities, the first Saber vs Assassin fight isn't too heavy on anything, Shirou vs Kuzuki is there to show Shirou's development as a fighter the first time, but I don't think it's saying anything too huge.

Archer could have just killed Shirou a thousand times. Before or during their fight, it didn't matter. He could have crushed him like a bug.
What did matter though was convincing Shirou that he was wrong. That his beliefs weren't worth it. That everything he was living was a lie, and to just rub the kid's face into the ground for every mistake he's ever made, and could possibly make.
Shirou didn't back down though. Hell, to him, "it wasn't a mistake". Wanting to help others, wanting to be a hero, it could never be a mistake. He might make mistakes, he do things that could have gone better, but in the end, Archer saved people. Shirou will save people, and that's what counts.
That's what Archer realizes too. That's why he backed down, and that's why Shirou won.

That's up to debate. For the first 13 episodes, maybe. But after that, the pacing was all over the place (the first part was accelerated and the archer vs shirou fight was overstretched to 3 episodes). Caster's mythical backstory wasn't expended upon, etc...
But then again it doesn't really matter. The VN still exists, as long as it's not a complete butchering, I don't think fans should really care. Seeing some scenes animated is good enough and the anime isn't bad, just not as good as it could have been with more monologues in first season and better directing.

They should have gone with Nasu's idea of a Fate route over UBW but Miura is a stubborn bull and wanted his Rinfag pandering. They had a bad call about the chosen route, HF would have been better too, but it was stuck for now after they tried that incoherent and inconsistent UBW mess.

Episode 21 was not "the worst episode". It stumbled a bit here and there, but there were some essential scenes. This bit in the pic here is from 21 >>336641225. Plus there was an entire second half that had some good stuff involving Gil and Shinji.
