Even MW2 and 3 were set in the future at the time of release. Black Ops 2 and Ghosts shouldn't even count. I'm buying Infinite Warfare for Infinite Warfare and might occasionally play MW. A lot of others will too. Dislikes on a video are nothing in the long run. The game will still sell well. They were probably expecting a backlash after what happened with AW, but by then the game was too far into development to just scrap. When MW3 came out it was a rehash, yet people loved it for some reason. Right now CoD is completely different compared to it.
It plays different, class mechanics are different and overall gameplay is different, you can't headglitch anymore for example.

It's a good shooter, though whatever pretense it has of being "old school" comes from a handful of mechanics like not actually needing to aim down your sights, a compromise between regenerating and static health and the presence of secrets. Other than that most of its DNA comes from shooters like Half-Life 2, with lots of interactive downtime between action. How much of that downtime is worth exploring thoroughly varies, and I feel that it doesn't have enough opportunities to really cut loose until the very end.
There was also The Old Blood, a shorter game set during 1946 which expands that era with a couple of new weapons and enemy types. The New Order should be pretty cheap by now but I enjoyed more of TOB for settling on a faster pace with more fighting than TOB had in its attempts to prioritise storytelling. If you plan on playing both, get TNO then TOB.
I always love how the games' media describes any kind of backlash as an ominous "group" that is "campaigning" and "organizing" to make them seem more sinister than just the fans not liking something.
I can't think of another form of entertainment where the media outright attacks the consumer base. Like does ESPN call their viewers drunk retards when they boo some athlete? Do gossip tabloids make fun of their subscribers and defend movie celebrities? I highly doubt it.

I feel like if they expanded both internationally and chronologically they can create games with different stories and different time periods and won't have to resort to going further and further into the future until all the warfare will be virtual reality.

Some things just bring out strong opinions in people. I mean, look at politics: Obama is somehow managing a 60% approval rating despite massive vocal hatred of him, similarly Trump maintains popularity despite a dismal 30% approval rating (the worst for any candidate since tracking began).
The Transformers films are some of the top grossing films the years they come out but people also hate those in large numbers as well.

Odd I heard the opposite. Activision was notorious with interfering in development. MW 1 developers had it promised in contract Activision wouldn't interfere in the sequel, then they shit on that contract.

It is a social media thing, and the thing is that I relate to your post, I am not a COD fan because of REASONS (Price, community, gameplay etc) but the people on this bandwagon won't touch RO2 with a pole, and AW and Blops 3 are surprisingly fun.
Additionally "Go back to WW2" has been a rant for over 6 years, I heard it as early as Blops was launched. It seems like some social media thing without any real reasoning outside baseless internet mob lynching.
/v/ has done it's share of hate lynching but it was never this mindless. Like why WWII exactly when RTS and GRTS are a much better genre for it, either that or grit realism like Red Orchestra and Rising Storm, that is as good as it gets and they are niche games. It does changes, or adds something new, the issue is that the series counter intuitive speed and respawn rates makes it hard to notice I believe the most drastic change was AW.
I have tried every free weekend, and I would pay for it if it was not so stupidly priced on PC.
