Yeah rather than my failed attempts at Reinhardt I play support 95% of the time, because nobody else wants to and I find it enjoyable. Lucio is great for defending escort missions, or attacking with his ult - Mercy is great for sticking to a Reinhardt/Zarya and making them monsters, or getting that Bastion in the corner to kill shit even faster for the 5 seconds he remains alive. Be disruptive, kind of like Symetra isn't a 'primary' support, I wouldn't call Winston a primary tank either. You can get in, put your bubble in a place that's a pain in the ass (your team can shoot through it), and then either bounce around their Reinhardt/slower ranged characters, or piss off Tracers/Widowmakers if you ever get near them by constantly doing enough damage that they have to pay attention to you, distracting a lot of their damage dealers.

The only real success I've found with her has been from close indoor range skirmishing with the more mobile offensive characters. You don't kill them, but you sure as shit stop them from getting past you.

It's weaker for single targets. This is why Lucio is preferred on maps where the team remains in close proximity to him, like pushing the payload cart or koth, and his E boosts the heal to very respectable speed.
Mercy is obviously better for single target healing, so you have to be on top of your game with paying attention to teammate health and flying back and forth efficiently.

The trade off, from my understanding, is that Lucio can dole out group healz as opposed to a single target heal. He's a better healer for holding down a cap point while Mercy can help a tank charge in to take the cap point in the first place.
Plus, the speed boost at the beginning of a match is gold. I guess Lucio is more for a "Combat Medic" type of player where Mercy is your dedicated healer.
