I always assumed "Liquid Ocelot" was actually Liquid being accidentally(?) channeled by Ocelot. So Liquid "dies" and then Ocelot wakes up and dies for nothing.
That's how I saw it, anyway. I mean, why write a guy as the son of a spirit channeler only to make a sequel where the son mysteriously channels some guy through "hypnotherapy"?
The fight itself wasn't that great since the gameplay falls apart with only one character but it happened at the right moment when shit was getting crazy.

Boss battles in Souls games have never felt like duels to me. Even the more humanoid enemies wielding weapons like yours are still like 6 heads taller than you, aside from Gehrman and Lady Maria. It still feels like you're fighting a monster, even when it stands on two legs.
Like the difference between fighting Cerberus and Vergil in DMC3. I wouldn't called Cerberus a duel, despite it being a one on one fight.

Yuri vs Estelle was pretty feelsy too, but not really intense. Yuri vs Flynn would need a few more minutes of banter.
It's basically the ending of MGS4 with way more budget behind it.

Tales of the Abyss was a one-hit wonder and it's frankly kind of baffling how every other game in the Tales series has such mediocre writing and characters (but usually good gameplay decent music which saves them from being outright bad).
The lore is initially confusing but interesting and VERY consistent. The political intrigue is fantastic. The characters are the most realistic I've seen in a game. The party dynamic by the end of the game feels so real because it's earned, you truly feel like they all fostered a true sense of camaraderie in the fires of hell. The story is great, the villains are great (the Six God Generals and Van are fantastic), the English translation is of pretty high quality. The game even touches upon some deep themes pretty nicely without feeling hamfisted and in-your-face like most JRPGs do.
There's not a single thing the characters do that doesn't feel like a real person in their shoes wouldn't do. People like to talk about things like 'why didn't Jade just stop it' but he very deliberately touches upon this near the end of the game and regrets his actions, a scene that most detractors of the game seem to have blocked from their memory, among other scenes.
The only real 'flaw' of the game is that it puts so much effort into its world-building that the pacing of the game suffers in the last leg. In Abyss the world is cohesive and each town is important to the plot. There is no village you visit once and never again like in most games. As the world faces different crises (Auldrant sinking, the start of the first war after Natalia is presumed dead, the miasma returning, the appearance of mass replicas) the player generally visits the same towns multiple times and can see how the citizens and world are reacting to the ongoing issues. While great for world-building, fast-traveling back to the same areas constantly can be grating for people who're not sufficiently invested in the game; it'll only piss them off more.

It hits some good points, it's true, but there are so many points in which characters react in absurd ways. This fight is so god damned underrated because people don't realize that fighting super aggressively and smart makes fights a lot easier, and since the game FORCES you to git gud in that fight, it feels way easier.

The amount of hours I played CQ with just myself and 1 other person, forming strategies and getting good with weapons I would never even consider using. I was almost able to buy an Ideal weapon just from playing it with 1-4 people over and overInstead I bought the unit set. Sometimes we would join random people on shared ships and call out each role (some JPs would ask to do certain role because they want to practice so we let them plus few hints/tips). I really love the Low Rank Shagaru fight, too. In my first encounter with Gore, I was flattened and violated despite not being new to the series at all. It was a struggle of a battle and when it whipped out those wing arms and horns it was nothing short of a terror.
Ever so slowly, fighting it again and again for parts, I got better at it. I stopped being afraid of it. Those feelers were gradually reduced from a sign of horrors to come to nothing but a target. And then when Shagaru arrived, I quickly and cleanly dispatched it in around 10 minutes.
And as I looked upon its corpse, I reflected on how much I had grown, and my experience with the series as a whole.

sure, game's combat system is easily broken, but the hype leading up to it and part 2 makes it stand out in my mind.
