Everyone in this has really weak or mediocre special except B, and G
G doesn't have the speed or defense to survive a hit, but B does. So B can pretty much annihilate all of them easily but D and G and J
J and G are both strong counters to B, but they won't necessarily be out on the same time.
J can't dish too much damage back out however, it only has chip damage, but I think the shield makes it more useful than G.
Most teams will therefore feature at least B and J.
One-Shot-Johnny is extremely powerful in attack and speed but can't take a it. He's useful for sweeping a team after it's been weakened or taking out attackers, but he can't switch in and take damage easily.
He's also a core essential to the team however. It's unclear if he could take out J, as J does little damage but has high defenses.
So we also Need C, who's average defenses, high attack, and above average speed will allow him to easily deal with J.
So every team will have at least B, J, One-Shot Johnny, and C as essentials and the most usable guys.
Everything else will depend on how others tend to fill out their teams

Maybe? Depends on the implementation. I'd imagine a shield would act as a supplement to health and possibly regenerate while defense would just knock off a certain percentage of damage received.
