I think all of the mainline Zelda games are exceptionally good. They get way too much hate.
I also think Resident Evil 6 is decent and I wasn't a fan of Dragon's Crown.

I think stories in video games can be enjoyable and sometimes they are a big part of why I play them. Some games would not be as good without a story. I'm also not entirely opposed to "movie" games as long as they are actually good movies. Most of them aren't though so they usually are pretty shit. I also don't think walking sims are a good way of telling a story and are just lazy. That being said, my favorite kind of game is one with good mechanics and gameplay but I still enjoy story games.

A good story can carry a bad game, but not nearly as far as a good game can carry a bad story.
Games are a radically different medium than movies and books and the fact you have to participate in the story limits what story elements can be included; things that work great in other stories don’t work at all in games.
In a movie, if the hero is stuck without their tools and required to sneak around people and improvise it’s tense and exciting, but those sections in games are almost universally despised. That’s just one example, but there are others.
I think there are some games with really, really brilliant narrative or thematic gimmicks, stuff like Papers Please, but those aren’t traditional ‘stories’ like would be in movies or books so I feel like people glance over it a lot.

I pretty much agree. It's why I prefer games with good mechanics to ones without good mechanics but a good story. There aren't really any games that I have played and loved where I hated the gameplay but there are some where the game just felt lackluster because the story was bad. MGSV is the best example, the gameplay was really good but the story was so underwhelming compared to the previous games that I just didn't enjoy it as much.
Battle Network 4 and 5 aren't bad, in fact, 5 is my favorite in the series. 4 is still low tier but definitely not worse than 1.
Radiant Historia not only is terribly overrated but is also a decent game at best. I believe most people who praise it had it as their first RPG.
Avalon Code was a great game even if it had much more potential.
FFTA2 is much better than FFT and FFTA.

I stopped playing mainstream Dynasty Warriors for Empires.
I recently got Samurai Warriors 4 Empires and I feel like it's got a lot going for it, but misses a lot of what makes Empires good.
The problem with DW8E was its lack of cutscenes and dialogue for things like marriage, something SW4E brought back and I'm glad for it. But the cutscenes need to be longer, I am glad they made politics more in-depth. However, making it faction driven instead of character driven was a step in the wrong direction. Why the fuck would I go through the trouble of making an edit or self insert so I can play as someone I don't care for? Also, they need to get their shit together with the graphics. Not the graphics themselves, but the clipping and shadows. I also think after DW6/7 they became somewhat more grounded, but not much.

I think Monster Hunter is the only series that can even be fairly compared to Souls, even though the similarities are thin. Both have a focus on close combat, but without the combo or style systems seen in other hack-n-slash games. Weapon animations have weight to them, and when you die, it usually feels like you were the one who made a mistake. That's where the similarities more or less stop.
I've said this before, but Monster Hunter and Dark Souls deal with two different types of difficulty. Monster Hunter requires a shit ton of prior planning in order to have a successful hunt. What armor set/weapon is ideal to fight with, do you need special items for the environment or monster's effects, things like that. How prepared you are for a hunt often determines its outcome more than your actual performance.
Dark Souls games are much more performance-based. There is still an element of preparation, like knowing a boss's weaknesses and bringing the right items for that, but it takes a backseat to how well you play. The games serve two different, though not entirely distinguishable markets, and neither one can really be said to be more difficult than the other.
This game has way better gameplay than muh Platinum or muh Dark Souls, it lacks enough opportunities to use all of it though.

Fire Emblem Awakening was a fun, if a middling, entry in the series, and does not deserve most of the shit it gets. Poorly balanced, bad maps, but it's still fun to grow characters and, thanks to the child mechanic, was more replayable than ever. On a side note, FE never had good plot, characters, or art, and that's not what you should have been playing for, so it was very silly to see people bring those up as major criticisms.

Well the original Diablo came out in 1996 IIRC. So obviously gameplay has evolved quite a bit in 20 years.

I love mainline SMT and DDS. I also love the persona series. The consensus here is that they're waifu stimulator games. That is true to a degree. You have to communicate with the people and develop the social links so that you can gain access to more powerful demons and creatures. P3 is less about social link stuff due to it being the first iteration. P4 takes the social links and improves them. The setting for the games also play into the opinions. P3 is dorm/surrounding city area. P4 is tiny town and the few close stores in the area. P1 and both parts of P2 are pretty tight with SMT stuff in that it's less about the friends (to a degree) and more about otherworldly consequences. In P2 innocent sin you fight Hitler, and in the second game P2 eternal punishment you fightTHE CRAWLING CHAOSNyarlathotep. P3 is where the persona line takes a turn to friendship and shit, but it still retains many SMT characteristics. They don't have law/neutral/evil routes but they still are fun. Pick up P2 if you want to really gauge your opinion on persona and go from there.

>Fire Emblem Awakening was a fun, if a middling, entry in the series, and does not deserve most of the shit it gets. Poorly balanced, bad maps, but it's still fun to grow characters and, thanks to the child mechanic, was more replayable than ever. On a side note, FE never had good plot, characters, or art, and that's not what you should have been playing for, so it was very silly to see people bring those up as major criticisms.

It was the among the worst iterations of the modern games. I don't even know how you can say that any of 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, or 12 are worse than it. It's probably better than 11, and I can maybe put it above 8, but don't even try to say it's a middling entry. The difficulty was by far the worst it's ever been, and the balance was so poor it makes SF2 look like chess.

I find videogames very enjoyable.
The thing that depresses me most is I am happy replaying 2 or 3 games per year, getting good at them, but since I visit videogames boards, I am aware of every great videogame that is being released, or has been released, and therefore my backlog growths.
My problem isnt that I dont enjoy videogames, it is that I dont have the time to put many hours in every great videogame.
