Game has active reload stamina. He's using the low-stamina cost stance that also gives you stamina when you dodge at the right time, but does very little damage. He's clearly also overleveled. The boss will only stagger when he's out of stamina, and the guy is doing a good job of managing both this stamina and Nue's.
But again, he's also overleveled and doing a fuckton of damage/stamina damage for the stance he's using.

After about 20 hours with the demo I can confidently say it's an improvement on Dark Souls, bosses aside.
The bosses were just sponges. Once you figured out when it was safe to stab them in the ass it was boring as fuck. No interactivity. Hopefully the end product will feature some more interactive boss fights.
The enemy design, art and atmosphere was fucking top notch - and the mechanics are deep enough for me to actually want to get better and learn more.
Unless they totally shit the bed and fuck the game completely despite the based as fuck demo, I'll be picking it up.

Finally got the Mark of the Conqueror. I always try to go into the Souls games blind and not use guides, and I wanted to do the same for this. So when I saw an anon mention using the spirit animal attack and onmyo (or whatever it's called) magic to make the boss easier I made a commitment to not using either. It was tough, as I'm typically not very good at these kinds of games (I've beaten all of the Souls games without summoning or guides, but it took me a very long time). But god damn if that wasn't satisfying. Haven't had a rush like that since Ninja Gaiden 2. Now time to work on the second area.
I just hope the entire game turns out as good as the alpha, and that it's a decent length. I think this has potential to be a GOTY contender, and could prove Team Ninja still can make great games outside of DOA.

Living weapon just expedites the rape. If you're good enough you can low stance stun lock Nue just as easily. He uses a lightning charge to rebuild his ki making his chest blossom again meaning if you hit it he'll break again as soon as he's got his ki back.

I honestly like (at least what little I've played of it) Nioh more than the Dark Souls games. The combat is a lot faster paced and more varied because of the stances but still has a lot of game play options and tactics open to the player. It makes 1-on-1 combat tense and multiple enemies especially difficult.
The fantasy, feudal Japanese setting of the game already makes it have more character than any of the Dark Souls games, which employed a drab, depressing European fantasy world. I don't think the score is on par with the Souls games, though.
The best part is howsilky smooththe game is compared to Dark Souls, the main reason I'm not getting Souls 3 until they release an update.
I don't use axes and I haven't used any low stances. Am I missing out?

medium stance have a great combo, get the skill where you use the spear to do a kick and then just use square, square, square, traingle, then if the enemy have low life use triangle again to impale it, if not use R1 to refill your ki, dodge their next attack and repeat. With a good spear and some levels in body you can kill almost any normal enemy with that combo.

Gold is separate from amrita (experience), but there are also no shops (at least in the demo). You can currently only use gold to buy shrine blessings, little passive buffs to drop rates and shit, and you can turn in your unwanted drops at shrines to get random consumables back (including arrows).

There are two currencies; Amrita (souls) and gold. At the moment you can't actually buy anything besides some little drop rate boosts which cost next to nothing so presumably you'll buy stuff with gold in the full game. Amrita is just for stats.

To be fair, all we have is a demo with two levels. We aren't even sure if the game is open world like the Souls, but it seems like the game will follow level progression similar to the demo. Either way, the levels were very replayable. Played through the first level like six times and the second three. I like how both levels have a number of branching paths, secrets, and a path for speedrunning. I understand the whole inferior lore, setting, ect. stuff though, as generic Japanese mythology has been done a thousand times before, but I still like it, definitely not as much as the creative blend of mythos that is the Souls series. Plus we haven't gotten a good samurai in mythological Japan since Onimusha it feels and this game is very clearly a modern take on Onimusha. I'm honestly surprised Capcom didn't make this game, it feels exactly like the kind of game I'd expect a PS2-era Capcom would make in the PS4-era.
I'd be surprised if there was no PvP in the final release considering the Diablo-styled loot system.

You have to read the attack stance the enemy is using, sometimes it's earlier than you think, sometimes later. Also whether you are using the spear or katana to parry changes it slightly. It took me a while to get down properly but now I'd say I get them a good 70-80% of the time.

What saves this from being Lords of the Fallen is that its combat isn't trying to ape Souls. They took Souls-style leveling and the souls (amrita)/bonfires and put them over top a game that plays like a mix between Ninja Gaiden and Bushido Blade.
It's different enough that I think it'll stand on its own, which is good.

I found a hidden mechanic I think. Many of you may already know that you can sheathe your weapon with R1 + Circle. At first, it seems rather useless other than using it for Iai slashes since the game already pulls your weapons from its sheathe when normally attacking. But, you are supposed to use it to quick switch weapons within combos— basically like how you can switch between stances mid combo. All you gotta do is perform a string and instead of Ki Pulse stance changing to low, mid, or high, you Ki Pulse stance change into the sheathe (R1+ Circle) and then immediately press left dialog button to switch weapons. If you do it right, your alternate weapons comes out and you can continue comboing with it.
