/v/ hated it since the very beginning. The butthurt immediately following the first show was legendary.

There's your problem. At some point there was something resembling a balance of shitposting and sincerity on /v/, but that time has long since passed. The only way to appease the hivemind would be to dedicate the whole show to just shitting on the year's releases - not even "worst of" awards, just going through a list of any games even remotely of note in chronological order and tearing into each for a few minutes at a time.

The only mistake was Maker winning but that it is.
Even bloodborne won a prize.

>Bloodborne won best aesthetics when both Ori and Splatoon look better
>Undertale won worst game award and got high in pretentiousness
>Alphys voted worst character even though she's literally the most well written character in Undertale
>Metal Gear Solid V won best trailer even though Persona 5's and FFVII: Remake's were better, and Xenoblade Chronicles X didn't receive a nomination there despite being the best trailer of all
>Dark Souls 3 and Deus Ex were the most anticipated upcoming games even though Nier Automata exists
>Witcher 3 and Xenoblade Chronicles X actually got nominations for worst graphics despite looking gorgeous

A lot of things went wrong, but they were all due to the shit taste of this board. Not due to the award show.

It was always the Reddit awards. The months following the release of the first /v/GAs and the unwanted attention it brought /v/ was the most significantly observable decline in quality the board ever experienced.
