Gameplay vs story depends on game. Game with fun gameplay needs no story (it's still nice thing to have), but good story or setting to follow can make me play game even if gameplay is generic, or plain bad.

The latter. Not that I don't appreciate gameplay with some depth and challenge to it, but I'm not a competitive gamer, and I'm also not someone who thinks stories don't belong in games. In fact, I think games have at least as much storytelling potential as other mediums, if not more.

Playing games for the characters and stories is stupid. If a game has a 'good' (pre-defined) story it will always have to take control of the player's path away from him. Half Life was an attempt to lampshade this by getting rid of cutscenes, but as you saw, they just ended up making pseudo-cutscenes where the player has to walk around in an enclosed space playing with props while the NPCs spout exposition.
Games are for triumphing over others, satisfying that instinctual need to compete.
'Telling' a preexisting story is the job of a book or a movie. 'Making' a story is the job of a game.

I like a good story and well-written characters. Too bad that this isn't the case most of the time, but whenever I see it, I enjoy it quite a lot.
I'm generally a more gameplay oriented person, finding challenges in gameplay only. I don't really play online at all. At best, I simply co-op or play against people in some party game. Due to challenging myself only in gameplay, there's no way I can be a bad player unless I stick to only one genre which I don't. I even frown upon people that don't appreciate gameplay.
