ehh, there were big dumb hints from the beginning that it was a VR simulation. It's tied into the core plot and the characters themselves enough that it comes off better than your standard "it was all a dream"-type story.
Hell it's not even that sort of story at all really considering the purpose of said VR world and the motive behind these guys being there in the first place.

It was alright. Ended a bit too cleanly by DR's standards and it got a bit too ridiculous (fending off 30+ Monokumas? what happened to Sakura just about managing to hold her own against 1?) I feel. Mukuro's cool in it though.
Even though pretty much none of the characters it introduced were all that likeable and it having the dreadedI was the villain all alongplot twist, I actually prefer Zero to IF personally. Mukuro's bits in it were just as cool too, gave her a nice amount of characterization for IF to springboard off of.

Been a while since I read it but Junko can probably only properly control one with any finesse at a time. Without being properly controlled, they're probably not as dangerous.
another thing I really liked about IF were all the Sayaka parts.
Also I liked the symbolismLeon uses a baseball to save her, Mukuro uses a spear throughout the story, Mondo uses a motorcycle, these are all basically the items that killed them in the real timeline.

The thing that makes Kuwata's execution my favorite by a wide margin is its presentation. The execution itself is wacky and ironic, if marginally more feasible than a lot of the others, but the shots it gives of his mangled corpse on the stake, with the bloodied ball rolling forward and the characters looking on in horror, really puts how fucked up and horrible the whole thing is into perspective. It played with the contrast between the cartoon silliness and the reality of the situation a lot better than basically every other execution, which tend to lean harder on the silly cartoon side of things.

I like specific characters in DR2 more but i think in terms of overall personalities its worse. Hinata, gundam kuzuruu, nagito, ibuki, and chiaki carried it alot for me with most the cast being likable but nothing to write home about with a couple of characters being outright duds.
all in all though those character stand outs specifically hinata and nagito i think bumps the cast up to being better cause it helped make the game reach far higher set pieces than possible with the first games cast especially since 2 follows through on theprotagonist being the mastermind rather than being a red herring
