It's the only ultra weapon that's somewhat good due to reaching a horrifically high 700 AR with 40/40 str dex
Majority of other large weapons do not reach high enough attack values to really be worth it over a near 500 attack dark sword that swings incredibly fast and is huge

My weaponfu right here, the two handed L1 is great for catching players off guard and the weapon art is great for spamming on AI when their shield is up. Running it with a quality build and a balanced gem

Slow weapons are shit in DS3. They'll barely do more damage than fast weapons while eating half your stamina bar with each swing. They're aren't even good for stunlocking because poise does not exist so every weapon can stunlock.

695 attack with Str and Dex at 40, and it gets even stronger when War Cry is active.
Two shots most people, and if you riposte with hornet ring on, it's a guaranteed death from full health 90% of the time
It does take some skill to use to not get totally shit on by every straight sword/curved sword/thrust sword babby though, although the simplest tactic is not to attack at all and parry their R1 spam and riposte with Hornet Ring. Eat the first two hits they do and parry the 3rd while you have stagger immunity.
if they don't r1 spam and disengage after two hits you just gotta get good at timing and spacing, and aiming attacks. Turn on manual attack aiming while locked on, it helps you angle heavy attacks towards moving players.
I've used this one on the whole ng playthrough. Its little bleed effect is so cute.

how do you guys not notice how garbage they are right away? I realized I made a huge mistake when I started up a new character as a sellsword, my R1 was one-shot killing the starting zone hollows but my L1 two hit combo was leaving them alive with a sliver of health.
First I hoped that magic weapon would help, like if the damage got added twice. Nope, it was still worse. Then I hoped upgrades would change the equation, like I needed ot overcome their damage absorbtion. Nope, it still sucks. I just switched to the drang hammers when I found them and never looked back.

I use a refined Ricard's rapier on my left hand. Gotthard twinswords on my right. Same for Farron Greatsword.
The rapier and twin sword are used in conjunction with each other in tight spaces like dungeons or catacombs where swinging a weapon will likely have it bang against a wall or pillar. The twinswords are used alone when I'm in an open area. The greatsword is used against crowds, knights or PvP in single wield.

I honestly think it should be the other way around. Not let the twinblade stun, but remove the cheap 5 hit combo stunlock that you can have with a straight sword.
You shouldn't be able to chain more than 2 hits on an enemy without any reaction.
I'm currently doing a Quality character with Caestus and Hollowslayer Greatsword.
They're both really fun. Caestus is a blast to stunfuck enemies to death, Hollowslayer is just a fun greatsword that I use for enemies I can't stun properly.
Killing the Irithyll giants in one stamina bar without them attacking was great. I don't know why I didn't try Caestus in any of the previous games.

Uchi is godlike.
Stunlocks everything, good bleed buildup, fast as fuck and the weapon arts lets me pretend to be Vergil.
Near the end of the game I was intentionally not levelling it up so I'd try and use other weapons but it was still the best thing I had.

In DaS1 and 2 they're pretty god-tier, in DaS3 you probably wanna settle on a Fume UGS(Contrary to popular belief Fume UGS is actually pretty good in PVP, although I suggest carrying a faster sidearm if the range+damage benefits are overpowered by speed)

Worst decision I ever made, the amount of dark sword hosts in artorias gear traveling in packs of sunbros with shields tripled.
I fucking hate that weapon. The moveset is actual garbage. The ONLY thing is does is spam R1, and that you can do that for half the stat req and risk of an UGS for the same damage grinds my gears

Greataxe the weapon class, are the fastest STR weapons in the game . If you think they're slow, you won't like anything else, save maybe for Executioner's GS or Butcher's knife. Maracas are dual wield STR, but they're parry bait because they're the slowest of the dual wielding weapons. Winged Knight Twin Axes do better as Refined.

Fire damage does better against far more things in the game, and for the few fire resistant things you can always throw dark fireballs. You can also just have one chaos and one dark version of the weapon you want, and switch them quickly but the amount of things in the game where dark beats fire can probably be counted on one hand.

The range on it makes it "feel" a bit better than the Great Axe, but War Cry and it's mod to R2 is better than Sharpen, which is just a straight damage buff and adds nothing else. Yhorm's Machete has a nice mod to R2 with it's weapon art and also has better range than a normal Greataxe. But they're all Great Axe class weapons, so they swing at the same speed. The Black Knight Great Axe has unique attack animations, however it is slightly slower than normal Great Axes. The moveset makes it a lot more interesting, however.
You may want to consider Executioner's Great Sword if you haven't already. I enjoy it even if people shit on GS now. I also had fun with the Butcher's knife, but it falls off in PvP once you start to get higher in levels. It is... okay in PvE. Outshined by other things. So yes, heavy/sharp/raw/refined coupled with buffs or resins is always gonna outclass fire/lightning/chaos/crystal/simple/deep/etc.
On top of that with the former you get to choose and apply a different resin or buff depending on what you're doing or your mood, plus you get really cool visual effects.
With the latter your weapons look 100% the same as before except for the small on-hit effect and you are stuck with one type, can't change it anymore to adapt

Pretty much everything gets 2 hits, because the game is designed to always let you slip out after the 2nd. Ultra weapons can work well by exploiting their hyper-armor and trading. It's mostly the medium-sized weapons that suffer, because they barely do more damage than longswords but have much slower animations, higher stamina usage, and no hyperarmor. They have all the disadvantages of both weapon sizes, with no advantages of their own.

You should mention that Crystal/Lightning/etc. infusions make for good riposte weapons if you've got the stat for it. The way damage/defense work when you backstab/riposte means an infused weapon will always outdo a buffed weapon of the same weapon class.
IE: A Lothric Knight Sword at say 300 AR buffed with Sunlight Blade to reach 525 AR will still do less damage than a Lightning Lothric Knight Sword with just 400 AR.

Scaling elemental infusions are largely intended for pure casters, who shouldn't have the str/dex to make physical infusions pay off. Yes you can. Wardens do literally no stamina damage. You could combo for days and you'll never break their guard. They also don't have a guard break for some reason.
They're fun weapons but really anyone with a decent shield will force you to switch to something else. They're also pretty garbage versus ganks since there's no hyperarmor on the startup and they have shitty range.

That's because you're using Gundyr's Halberd. Knight Slayer ring increases the amount of Stamina consumed by blocking your weapon by 10%. Gundyr's is one of the hardest weapons in the game to block, so it gets a massive benefit from the Ring. Twinblades do not.

Is profaned greatsword good for pure str? I want to use another weapon other than my Gundry's Champ.
is there any reason why this isnt used by more people? I mean it scales with S(!) on strength at +10! That means an assload of flat bonus damage and Its attack speed is just the usual straight-sword shit. I tried it fighting off some invaders (being a total PvP scrub) and i totally managed to kill a couple or at least get their health below 80% just by blocking and attacking normally.
The only downside i see is that it cant be buffed (aside from the included health-steal buff).

Dragonslayer Greataxe does well because its physical damage is nearly in line with stuff like Yhorm's Great Machete, and the lightning damage is essentially a permanent 40 faith lightning blade buff even running no faith. There's little downside to its split damage, since it's the same setup any high physical damage + buff would give. Stuff like BKGA will outdamage it, but really not much else.
Drakeblood sucks because its physical damage is on par with the shittier longswords, and then all 3 of its damage types are going through different defenses and getting penalized for being too low compared to defense. 100% of its AR is getting penalized, instead of the 20% on the Greataxe that is.
