They're RPG with less focus on battles, exploration or story but more focus on item gathering and crafting, scheduling and character development. I think it's pretty unique as far as RPG goes, there's no big world-saving plot or epic journey. For exemple Rorona's plot is just about saving your atelier because the King's minister wants to destroy it and build a factory over it and you do various tasks to prove that your atelier is useful to the kingdom.

Because some of the games are direct sequels, some locations, characters and monsters are reused, which obviously makes the development time lower, and the games are all RPGs with item crafting, so while they do change some of the mechanics it's not a completely different game; If it's not broken don't fix it.

3DS one changed the battle system to a tactical one. It is considered a really bad change.
They also add a little side story with Rorona's master. It is not a great deal.
I'm so far behind on this series, I platted Totori and Meruru but got burnt out during Rorona+.

I like the tasks in Rorona a lot better. Meruru just tells you should do a good job and then lets you do whatever you want for three years or whatever it was. Rorona updates the main objective/side objectives every three months so you have to balance working on them as well as doing other things like exploring or making better items or whatever. I found it much more fun like that.

The system's changed a lot since then. No time limit. A little lewder. Although it's hard to top that slut totori. Synthesis plays more like a minigame instead of finding the best ingredients. The combat will be fully turn based instead of individual moves. Like you enter all 3 of your attack options and let it play out based on speed stats instead of one at a time.

To be fair though, you can turn voices on/off for specific situations (eg turn it all off except for battle voices). Ayesha Plus is the only flat out better Plus version.

I never had a problem with the partial dubs. Then again I tend to prefer older JRPGs with no voice acting at all, so I guess I'm just used to reading everything.
Anyway, I'm hyped for Sophie. Got my LE preordered. I enjoyed all of the PS3 Ateliers (although I feel they peaked with Ayesha) and from what I've heard this is another good one.
