I feel like it's more a reaction to 4k adoption occurring much faster than HD adoption did. Pretty much anyone buying a TV nowadays buys 4k as it's barely more expensive.
People (including myself) are buying into the 4k meme and Sony sees an opportunity to profit off that.
I don't think anyone's particularly worried about the NX. Nintendo have played themselves into a corner with the Wii U and will have to to work really hard (which they won't) to get people outside their fan core to consider the NX.

And? The economy is still in poor shape. It makes sense that cheap games will be doing well and that consoles that cost hundreds wouldn't be doing as well. A smart phone can cost about as much as a game console, but it's more portable and has more functions. A game console is simply an entertainment machine.
