Post your theories and lets start a discussion on the series.Thx
>>
Origin of Pyramid Head:
When James Sunderland and his wife first came to Silent Hill the visited the Historical Society. There they saw the "Crimson and White Banquet"painting. In the painting you can see members of Valtiel sect.Pyramid head is James ' s subconscious. He is chased through the game.It kills Maria who is a depiction of Mary.He sees himself as a Pyramid head because he was involved with his wife death.Pyramid head is not the default monster of Silent Hill as seen is the movie. It is a part of James and his guilty conscience. It only belongs in Silent Hill 2.

Okay, here's something I've heard some different opinions about...
How long has Mary been dead in SH2?

Some seem to think that it only happened a few days ago (after it's revealed that James' memories aren't to be trusted), but I can't see anything pointing to that.
It'd make more sense for me if the guilt was eating him up for months before he finally "received" her letter.
>>
Anyone know how to fix having white borders in SH3? Even with fullscreen, the screen is bordered with these small white borders, really takes away from the experience. Anyone know of a fix? On Windows 10 by the way.

Also, gross. I have never been able to decide if it's supposed to be rusted or if everything is taking on a decaying biological sorta state.
>>
The Butcher could have been a fucking fantastic enemy.
>>
>>336176041

I think Ito or someone on Team Silent once dropped a hint that alluded to the fact that basically right after Mary died, he put her in the trunk of the car and drove to Silent Hill. But this could be complete bullshit, as I can't remember where the fuck I heard it.
>>
>>336177257
The trunk part was part of a guide (iirc), but I don't know if it was an official statement.
>>
>>336177257

For the In Water ending though, we see James pick up Mary's dead body to take it with him. Doesn't seem to be any implication in the game itself that that's the case.
>>
Silent hill died with Team Silent and i would argue that games after silent hill 3 are non-cannon
>>
>>336177576
The Room was still good though.
Fucking dumb and had a few questionable design choices, but good nonetheless.

Only two games in the entire are fucking connected in a meaningful way anyway. Continuity means next to NOTHING for Silent Hill.

Then make one, and I wish you luck with that.. But obviously just call it something else if you want to sell it.

It worked for Lone Survivor.

Rebirth was a nice fan game that fulled of the feel in RPG MAKER somehow.

And Alchemilla pulled it off with a puzzle focus and being in first person.

And Banned Memories looks promising from the alpha build/demo.

Others can do it and so can you!

I believe in you, anon!

Tribute to SH1 and 2 done in a PS1 style. It's just a short demo for now, but it seems like the dev has more plans for it. And well, after Back in 1995 disapointed me a little bit, I'm extra excited for this one.

No good horror has explained its lore nor it should.

Nothing wrong with that! He bloody well destroys the Nurse and mostly just lumbers around after that until you shotgun him to pieces.
He would have been a pretty great persistent enemy. Nemesis-esque even.
>>
>>336180083
The intro/first section of the game is one of my favorite moments playing a game period. I really do think it's worth a try.

oh, something to note is there's an important document in the European and Japanese version of the game but not the U.S. one that really changes people's perceptions of a certain character. So it might be worth looking that up if you aren't getting the PAL version.
>>
>>336179917
The original grey children made me feel just that. I was 9 when I played the game. Imagine looking at one of those things coming at you from the dark, let alone a swarm of them.
If I were in such a scenario and I had a gun on me, I'd just put it against my temple and pull the trigger.
>>
>>336180478
The first time I got my hands on SH, I was far to young. It was a demo disc that I think might have come with a gaming magazine. I tried to play it, oh how I tried. But I was so young that the mere atmosphere made me feel to stressed to continue. The demo was specifically the school, so I must have encountered Grey Children too.

Feels bad knowing that no game will ever have such a visceral effect on me ever again.
>>
Is there any instance where you see the streets of Silent Hill while in the Overworld? I know you get to see a glimpse of it during Silent Hill Revelations and the 2006 movie, but those are very brief and don't show much.

>Shattered Memories
>Downpour

These are not the same Overworld.
>>
>>336180434
>Nemesis-esque even.
It might have been a little derivative of RE, but some Nemesis-like enemies might have really given Silent Hill some much needed flare in its later years.
The ghosty things in The Room sort of provided that experience, but only vaguely. Could've been cool imo
>>
>>336180768
I played the first Resident Evil when I was ~8-9 (with my cousins). After seeing the infamous cutscene with the white zombie devouring the cameraman I instantly switched the game off and prohibited the other two from ever mentioning zombies again. If I saw Silent Hill I'd probably land in a juvenile psychiatric ward.
>>
>>336180293
I just looked it up
http://silenthill.wikia.com/wiki/Neely's_Bar

I always thought it was interesting too because its so vague
>>
>>336180293
There's a bunch of theories on that.
One is that it's literally Mary's pussy not being available to James anymore.
Another is that it relates to SH1, where Harry Mason visits an antique shop and there is literally a hole there (the word BAR is written somewhere else, so it's implied the hole leads to the bar) and afterwards when you visit that same place while being in a place called "Nowhere", the hole has disappeared.
Even another is that it relates to SH4 which has a thematic where you travel about through holes/tunnels, that's got something to do with birthing imagery, but I don't bite that because... retroactive references? Team Silent was good but not time travel, future-seeing good.
>>
>>336180951
Is there an overworld though?

I know in Silent Hill 1, it's explicet that there is none and that what's happening to the town is REAL.

And in 2, everyone sees things differently. That seems more like everyone's own delusions than other dimensions.
>>
>>336180951
Overworld meaning the normal world?
Homecoming has a lot of that. Origins too?
>>
>>336180951
Silent Hill Origins "Otherworld" is pretty much Silent Hill 1's.

Silent Hill 1 has chunks of the game with Harry traversing the otherworld streets of Silent Hill too.
>>
>>336180951
>>336181332

My apologies, I meant the Otherworld. Spooky rusty metal gore place. My bad.

We're still sane anon. I think we've done okay, all things considered.
I also saw RE for the first time with my cousin, but it was only in passing. I was leaving when he was playing it and it was near the beginning. The room with the statue pouring water? I didn't see anything scary thankfully.
>>
>>336181403
>>336181403
Origins is supposed to be interwoven with SH1, isn't it? I didn't get a chance to play it and I never did when I found out reviewers trashed the game.

Kojima was, imo, the means of conveying DT's horror concepts. I think it was supposed to be a dual effort. DT has a good eye and mind for Pyscho-horror.

Brian Bloom was really good as Alex.

I liked some of the locations in the game too
like the Hell's Descent section of the game and I thought the combat had lots of potential and I thought it was fun. Too bad the knife was so overpowered and the dodging mechanic was so fucking inconsistant And the PC port was horrifyingly bad.

I'm actually gonna try to get a friend of mine into SH with Homecoming and Downpour, mostly because he's pretty normie and he doesn't really like old-school horror games but I think he'd still like the newer entries.
>>
>>336183904

I liked that some weapons also worked as items to progress in the game, and that weapons have their strengths and weaknesses against each enemy.

the locations looked very nice for the most part, Hell Descent was great buildup for a good battle. The last part was kind of dull.

>How long has Mary been dead in SH2?

She likely died a few days prior, considering the "mysterious letter" was just a letter she wrote and asked a nurse to deliver post-mortem. Letters usually take a few days to be delivered, thus the theory that Mary was only dead for a few days.

Also, James says that she died three years ago because that's when she was first diagnosed with the disease. So that's when the old Mary died, basically.

Allison Road. I'm guessing it turned out to be trash then. The Clock Tower games any good? Fatal Frame? I tried Haunting Grounds and it was no good.
>>
>>336176041
Laura just turned 8 a few weeks before the game takes place. She has a letter from Mary wishing her happy birthday and telling her how she wanted to adopt her but she can't. So James couldn't have killed her more than a couple weeks prior to the start of the game. It's entirely possible that the reason he is in that bathroom at the start is because he was overwhelmed with guilt on his lonely drive home right after he did it and had to pull over to collect himself.

>>336191487
Siren is probably your best bet if you're after more SH-like stuff. Fatal Frame is also pretty good.

The sequel is laughably bad, though.

btw, since we're all horror fans here - Dario Argento, the Italian horror director, made a movie called "Phenomena" (starring young Jennifer Connely), which is extremely similar to the first Clock Tower, sans a few details and plot devices. Hell, even the walkway collapse is in it, albeit in a slightly different context. Plus Connely wears clothes eerily similar to those of the main character of the game. They were made 10 years apart (1985 and 1995), but the movie holds up really well.

Basically hell, it operates by reflecting the deep dark schisms that live inside of them and altering the world. The horrors they see are their own darkness manifest with their darkest fears and selves oft times manifesting in greater horrors.
Ala pyramid head.
Worse, if there are more people there or the traumas and emotional pain of a person is strong enough it can bleed into the personal hell of any other people.
People can leave silent hill if they learn to fight their own inner demons and ever come to terms with them or defeat them, thus making them unsuitable for the towns pourposes and they are released.
The aforementioned bleed over throws a monkey wrench in those plans.

The bleed over is also the power behind the cult and why silent hill has gotten worse and more powerful.

First one is tolerable, even kind of good in some parts. Definitely worth watching at least once. The second one is legitimately one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It's very clearly two completely different scripts smashed together, so much so that things happen for completely unexplained reasons and plot lines from the beginning of the movie just disappear half way through, as well as character motivations completely changing with no warning whatsoever. The girl playing Heather is a qt, but that's the best thing I can say about it.

The first one isn't too bad. It gets the atmosphere of Silent Hill down pretty well, even if it doesn't really understand what the deal with the town is. Pyramid Head shows up to make his contractually obligated appearance, so that's dumb, but all in all its pretty watchable.

Only watch Revelations if you want a great lesson in how not to make a movie. It literally does everything wrong and has absolutely no redeeming qualities. I don't know how Carrie-Anne Moss and Malcom McDowell got roped into that thing.

The thing that really blows my mind about Silent Hill Revelations is that literally every line of dialog in the entire movie is exposition. Nobody has a normal conversation at any point in the movie, it's always someone explaining something to someone else. Somehow even with all that exposition nothing makes any god damn sense.

This is why French people shouldn't be allowed to write scripts. That goes for games too, David Cage.

My theory is that Silent Hill doesn't physically manifest anything, at least not in the traditional sense. Instead Silent Hill is a place where reality is what it is perceived as, kind of like those black and white double images. Both perceptions of the same image are just as real, but the image itself remains unchanged by the viewers.

Those with reason to not follow the consensus of reality project themselves onto their own world and withdraw from reality, while particularly strong beliefs can even draw in others who already share a similar perception.

This is why the real world, fog world, and otherworld all exist and bleed into each other imperceptibly, while multiple dimensions being a thing doesn't fit. Each world is distinctive, but are each the exact same world simply viewed with a different outlook.

Bullshit, stop listening to idiots who think they know what they're talking about, the otherworld is not an stablished phenomenom, in 1 is alessa's nightmare being projected, in 2 is james' guilty subconcsious, in 3 is Claudia's twisted take on the cult, in 4 is walter's twisted growing up memories, is not an actual place, is just a thing that happened to some people and just needed a name.

Just don't expect a survival horror like Silent Hill is. This game is more along the lines of a point and click adventure, but it's still decent.

I've only played the PS2 version, but I hear the PSP version is redubed and includes and extra ending.

I watched the movie and something about it lured me into the mythos. I think it was the ending, the way it remained ambiguous as to whether Sharon/Cheryl and her mother were dead, alive, dreaming, in hell, in purgatory, still in Silent Hill, or trapped in between parallel worlds forever.

It wasn't until the staircase scene with Angela from Silent Hill 2 that I was absolutelt hooked, though. I've never been through anything as traumatic as what she has been through, but the way she explained her schema of the world -- "For me, it's always like this." The way James offhandedly says it's kind of hot, somehow missing the fact that there are flames all around them. That kindred ambiguous ending, walking up a burning staircase and turning a corner, forever surrendering. I can only be grateful that I'm not that broken. Angela...

Since SH2 is all about the lore and place of Silent Hill where you learn that it was the spiritual power of the town. Later you find out that the spiritual power got corrupted by "The Order" demonic entity.

And the games really stops at 3.

Different anon.

You took the bait, of the classic "thing I like is better/more intellectual than the thing you like" variety.

Anyway, just in case you need it, the correct definition of psychological horror is such type that gives you little information, leaving you to fill the scary holes yourself. You make people think of the scary stuff, instead of showing people scary stuff.
>>
>>336203871
I skipped forward to about 27:40 to see if you stay on topic, but you're talking about OPM. I was hoping, unrealisticly so, for an info driven playthrough.
This is more like commentary. Not bad, but not what I was hoping for. Keep it up anyway
>>
What's some good places to go just try to get some maps and history of the town of Silent Hill itself? I'm thinking of maybe running a RPG campaign set in Silent Hill, probably with the Nemesis system. Though I'm willing to try another one if you have any suggestions of a system.

Yeah, I know it's more of a /tg/ thing, but it's still Silent Hill relevant. And just the character focus of Silent Hill is something I think COULD work well for roleplaying.

Though working with a group instead of just one person might be weird I suppose.

And that's what SH is. They don't give you all the answers, and the majority of the games have been about the minds of the characters unraveling in some way. They are psychological.

The real misconception is people calling SH SURVIVAL horror.
>>
>>336205345
Survival horror is such type that will fucking kill you if you aren't careful, or don't save up on med kids. If you have to manage a very limited number of bullets and healing items, it is survival horror.

Unless of course Silent Hill is not a TRUE scotsman.

Devs wanted to make a new horror game set in the same universe. Early into development for $ reasons decision was made to make it more related to past games. Due to pressure from Konami (also known as the worst fucking company), the game was rushed and released unfinished and slightly buggy. Playable and with mostly intact story, but rough and unfinished.

At the end of the say, It's still a spinoff set in the same world. Unfinished, buggy, but playable and okay.
>>
>>336207292
>>336206946

There's a little retrospective I remember reading that said it had the best story but the worst gameplay of the games I'd say that goes to Shattered Memories, personally since those fucking commands in the chase sequences aren't reliable, which I think isn't too far off.

But yeah, I can at least garuntee it's worth at least trying out and making your own mind.

I think there's actually a free demo you can find of 4 if you try it out first before going on ebay to get and don't want to pirate.
>>
>>336207795
A rule of thumb is to buy the Greatest Hits version of the PlayStation versions. Series became multiplatform after 2, but it is a known fact that 3 on PS2 has zero problems. The team clearly tested on PS2 first.

Oh well, it was a nice thread.

Might as well end it with a drawing of two great men, while they were still friends.
>>
>>336210946

Eh, they were amusing, but kind of full of themselves. There were times they got way too prideful about what they felt was objectively right, and then ribbing even the most inoffensive detractors/opposing opinions. Not to mention most of their jokes were just lame.
>>
>>336211684
At least they were right MOST of the time, which cannot be said of most retrospectives.

Hell, even one of the original SH team members liked it.
>>
>>336213065

They were only right about certain things, even, the series was always meant to be a little open to interpretation. While they were right to blow things like "the cult having a name" and "It's always a dream for every character, nothing is supernatural", it was equally ridiculous how they kept deferring to a book that wasn't entirely written as official explanations but cryptically worded conjecture. Book of Lost Memories is pretty much like a dreary Hyrule Historia, it confirms only so many things, while leaving others still open because the team wanted players to have some personal take in events, as seen with SH2 and it's half-dozen endings.
>>
>>336213515
I hate to say this, but interpretationfag detected.
>>
>>336213916

And what's that supposed to mean? Plenty of the games offered things to interpret. They never confirm if the demons were always legit things, or made real because of the cults bullshit and abusing Alessa's power. They literally stated that no one ending in SH2 is more canon than another (one or two of the dev team saying one is their favorite doesn't count obviously), and even making the ending of SH3 incredibly vague in regards to what Heather is looking back to when after killing "God". Don't be a cunt like TP tended to be where they had to act like self righteous asshats when all they had was compiled data, not completely absolute, 100% confirmations from the original makers.
>>
>>336214218
I made up a new word.

That's what I mean.

I also mean that most people who claim that SH is 75% open to interpretation do so only to make their own theories make sense. And to sound smart explaining their genius theories to other fans.

/2 cents

Besides, most of those theories don't make sense anyway.
>>
>>336215124

The only bullshit theories are "it's parallel dimensions" and "All the monsters are people", yet some of them do have credible ideas to them.
>>
>>336215374
Well, I wasn't saying there isn't room to theorize. Since it's 75% explained, 25% is left open.

Like did Cybil live? It could go either way, as the head writer for 3 said. What ending of 2 is "canon"? James's VA likes the good ending, but thinks the devs preferred the bad one. What the fuck is the power of Silent Hill? How does the town look like in normal times?

However, nobody is right on those ones. Even me. Even you.
